It's weird because if they remember him to the point of not being able to film it, then his earlier work was more than successful. I'd love to see more from him though.
Borat 2 was not a good movie at all, he completely forgot how to do the character, the accent sounded nothing like it did in Da Ali G Show or Borat 1, and he focused way too much on the cheesy lines like "Very nice," instead of what actually made the character really funny in the original show and the movie. He didn't have the true wit or humor that Borat did originally, it felt like it was someone else doing a really bad impression of Borat, not actually Borat. He definitely needs to keep Borat retired unless he can remember how to do the character again.

@@Masterpieceman16 I highly doubt it, if he lost his touch he lost his touch, age and more time away from the character isn't going to improve him, it will have the opposite effect. I don't think he even cares about the character much anymore, he only used the 2nd movie to push a political message before the elections, the main goal obviously wasn't just making a really funny movie.

It was staged. The whole thing was staged. Everyone laughs at Borat's "victims" because they don't realize it's fake... whilst everyone at home is being fooled by the promotional team who puts on ridiculous productions like this to further perpetuate the con job. The joke is on you. SBC is no hero. He's pretty good, but he not THAT good. 11:34 - Look carefully and honestly at that frame. It's stage-lighted for film. That's "Hollywood magic" right there, in front of your face. Sure, there was probably a lot of improv, but everyone knows they're starring in a movie.

It's not really hilarious when he makes fun of an entire village of people touting them as incestuous pedos without their knowledge or consent that the videos he took would be used in this way.
"They did it in complete secrecy." I remember specifically the Trump prank and the country singer scene, both of those made the news and the wider internet pretty quickly honed in on the idea that there was probably a new Borat film being made. There's a handful of moments where they straight up got caught filming the second movie.

Thanks to remaining Queen members we got a really inaccurate, watered down promo film that had little to do with reality. Cohen left because of the "creative differences". Also the prosthetics, common ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The fact that Borat character was retired at least in part because Sacha thinks it has become too dangerous now makes me really worried about the world, the flashpoint can be really close.

Borat has aged terribly and I'll never understand what adult thinks his brain dead humour is even remotely funny lol. The guys 'comedy' is aimed at young folks who don't understand what real comedy is.
Airplane, Borat, and The Big Lebowski are three of the best comedies IMO. Jenise donated almost the entire 300k raised for her......... wow, what an amazing woman. Protect her at all costs!

I literally had a stroke in the theater when I saw Borat and the 4:58 scene came in with that horse falling over. I was laughing so hard I almost passed out. It's the dedication to the bit that kills me every time and SBC is the best at it.

This man is an international gem, good intentions to show humanities flaws, but alsosome our good traits.
Naturally gifted at comedy as well, some of the scenes in Borat were wildly unexpected.
I remember watching Borat in theaters in high school. The place was packed. I think it's the hardest I've laughed in my life.
I love how he just went out to basically take the piss out of people and make a movie. One of the best films of all times cause rhe fact its just real and what people think. No acting just him pretending to be someone completely different and then everyone opened dup to him. The fact the whole team put themselves at risk for this whole movie is great. It's a shame borat 2 doesn't hit quite the same cause everyone knew him but was great how they came around to the idea of his daughter and just a great american woman helping out was good. He is a brillant comedy and knows the best way to take the absolute piss out of people.
I remember seeing trailers for Boat and rolling my eyes. One of my friends made me watch it when it came out on DVD. I Love that movie.

There actually was quite a bit of acting by both Sacha and Maria, but I hear what you're saying and totally agree.

I just want to let you know that Borat was not the first movie to be made this way. To my knowledge the Norwegian film "La Elva Leve!" from 1980 (not the one from 2023) is the first film ever to be made this way. It is a pretty interesting story how the film was made. It is about the controversial decision the Norwegian state had made at the time to build a giant dam in the sami region that would destroy a lot of wilderness and sami territory. At the time there were many protests against the building of the dam, and the main character of the film is a corrupt journalist that is trying to bribe sami people to say they don't mind the dam being built, and in his journey to do so, ends up documenting how terrible the consequences of the dam would be for the sami people. It is by no means a perfect film, but it is a really interesting one. It was absolutely butchered by critics when it came out. They hated the idea of mixing comedy and documentary. Because of this the film ended up being re-cut, removing all scenes that had only actors in it, which essentially removes the story as well, resulting in the re-cut being essentially just a collection of interviews. So if this movie is of any interest to you at all, for the love of god make sure you watch the long version, which sadly is much harder to come by. Edit: I recently learned of a project that aims to release every Norwegian film ever made on blu-ray (because shockingly few older movies, even culturally significant big movies are currently available on dvd/blu-ray). So I expect to see the proper version of La Elva Leve! on blu-ray with English subs in the not too distant future.

@@potthethird to my knowledge it is not available anywhere except old VHS copies and rolls of film. I believe the National Library of Norway has a digital version of the film which they are able to send to film clubs that want to arrange showings of it. If you are unable to book an appointment and go to the library yourself, getting a film club to arrange a showing is probably the easiest way. Though, I don't know if there are subtitles available this way

Privacy is a tricky subject all the way around. People shouldn’t need something “to hide” in order to have privacy. But as far as laws go, you have less expectation of or right to privacy in public places compared to something like your home, for example. And in the home you expect more privacy in the bathroom than in the kitchen. In the modern world with cameras almost everywhere, things had to be adjusted. Therefore filming people in public places isn’t usually considered a violation of privacy. If you’re already in public, where random people could walk by and see you, then is what they would see being captured on film that much farther of a step? So no, people do not have to sign waivers or have their faces blurred. Even if the resulting product will be monetized. How else would the entire industry of influencers exist? A good chunk of what they do is in public, or even based on public reactions. People already shit all over anything that could possibly be considered as faked or staged. How much worse would all the cringe type content actually be if every person in every video had to consent? It’s just not how any of this stuff works. Hope that helped clear up some of the basics about filming in public and modern right to privacy

If I could go back in time and be present during some moments in history (and I know this sounds ridiculous), watching Borat, Bruno and The Dictator in the theatre with other people would be on this list. I was a kid when they came out, so I only got to watch them years later, and there's NOTHING funnier I've ever seen on screen - in terms of long-form comedy. What makes Sacha a bit crazy (but special) is that he will go to the greatest lengths in the name of a funny scene. And yes, this includes painting out an ordinary man to be a "terrorist" (in Bruno). I'm not justifying this, but only people who are really passionate about making comedy will understand why he did it, and it must be because he puts "the funny" before everything else. Yes, it's a little bit f-ed up, but that's how crazy about their craft some artists are. Look at Picasso - painted young girls naked. I'll take Sacha's quirks over Picasso's any day. :D And I'd love to see another Dictator because this one's much easier to do considering it's scripted (unlike Borat and Bruno). Why not portraying Putin?

Nobody said they didn't know they were being filmed, dummy. They didn't know what they were being filmed FOR, they thought it was a documentary about a foreign journalist learning about America. I get the feeling the people who think Borat etc is scripted are exactly the sort of doofuses who would end up being featured heavily in the next Borat film.

I already thought that Sacha Baron Cohen was one of the greatest comedians alive. Now I am convinced he is the greatest. The commitment, bravery, and sheer lunacy needed to come up with and follow through with this shit is unmatched. I have loved all of his roles from Borat to Aladeen to Thenardier but this is by far the best.

I had a "Borat" number plate on my car for the past 6 years because it was funny, and there wasn't a single day where it didn't make someone laugh. At first I got it as a joke but then I just kept it on and it was amazing! People would yell out Borat lines at me while driving and take photos. I even got out of fines when I got pulled over because the cops thought it was hilarious 🤣🤣

Sacha Baron Cohen is a rare person - a self-aware genius who has the ability to shine a mirror onto society, so that we see who we really are. It is a true shame that Borat is permanently retired, but I honestly cannot see him resurrecting this character again. Not only is he far too recognizable, but I bet it gets kind of tiresome to keep performing a character you created in your 20s, when you yourself have evolved as a person and want to approach your craft in a different way. Thus, I do expect to see Cohen creating other characters, like he did in _Who is America?_ He has proven to the world and to himself that he is exceptional at creating believable fictional characters, and inserting them into real-life situations. They say satire is dead because the elements of society that are being satirized have been taken so far into what I could only call self-parody, that it is impossible to shock anyone anymore with fake beliefs. So a new approach may be needed - there are many ways to hold that mirror, and many things it can show us...if we're paying attention. I remember when Borat came out. Basically everyone in my age group was talking about it. In high school, the golf team were heading to a tournament and our coach had a Lincoln Navigator with a DVD player. One of my teammates whipped out Borat for us to watch on our way over to the course. We were all dying laughing the whole way over and we even were quoting the movie during our round.
