I've watched a LOT of spindle and bowl turning videos over the last month. Your explanations have made it "click" for me. Stopping the lathe and the close up shots while you explain are extremely helpful for me. Thank you!
You're the first wood turner I've seen who can describe and show what "riding the bevel" is in plain English. Super helpful! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you, Darrell! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Ditto!!!
I used a bowl gouge in the past, but experience catching occasionally. Your explanation regarding the angle of the bevel with respect to the material really clarified how to avoid that. Thank you!
First timer here from Australia. I've checked a few videos so far but was extremely dissatisfied with the teaching quality Until now. Finally here is someone teaching who knows how to teach.
Thank you so much, I am a member of a wood crafting club of 5 months and 7 weeks ago I attended their turning course. I have been practising 4 days a week since on scrap and then I made 3 spurtles which is an old fashioned Scottish stirring tool for soups and porridge. Tomorrow I am starting small with the bowl gouge on a piece of Ash about 4 inch square which has been rounded off ready to go on the lathe. I made a smaller bowl at the training course. Anyway to cut a very long story short, this is the 4th video I have watch for beginners making their first bowl and by far the best. Thank you so much, I've learned so much and have subscribed and hit the bell.
I just bought a used lathe from a lady who has lost her husband. Your instructions is giving me the basic information that I need to get started. I look forward to reviewing the rest of your videos.
This is one of the best tutorials on bowl gouges I've found. THANKS
You are welcome. Thank you for the high praise!
thanks u have a great way 2 explane things iam going 3 learn how 2 di turning God bless have a good 👍 and godly day cheers 🍻
I got my first set of traditional tools. I've been using carbide for quite a few years and I love them but I been talking to a friend of mine and he invited me over to try some traditional tools. I really liked getting my hands on them and he gave me some real good name to go by so I purchased a set of Ralph Sorby tools. I've been looking at quite a few videos on the proper use and positioning of them. I really like this video and looking forward to seeing more of them. All of God's continued Blessings to you. Thank you very much for your time.
I'm 74 years old and I'm just getting into bowl turning. Your instruction videos are a great help. Thanks1
Thank you for writing and sharing! Glad to help! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
i have had problems using a bowl gouge, now that i have seen this video i am ready to go out in my shop and try again. Thank you
I’m thrilled to hear this. All the best to you. Happy turning!
A very clear and practical video that helps overcome concerns about moving from a roughing gouge to a bowl gouge. I found the closeup explanation of angles, tip contact, and whole body movement both valuable and easily grasped. The red line tip is a gem.
One of the best videos out there. He doesn't talk down or try to act like he's the best around. Just good information.
Thank you, David! Yes, I'm just trying to share the important info. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
@@TurnAWoodBowl Most welcome. You truly do a far better job than so many others out there. It does not need to be expensive but why skimp when it comes to tools? I’d rather have one good tool than four mediocre ones :) keep up the good work
I've been turning for about 3 months, and fully understand what NOT to do as I found i'm doing everything incorrectly or should I say uninformed. I now understand how to AVOID the ring marks, chatter and basic understanding of the angles involved Thanks for the lesson and can't wait to turn my next bowl!!
Beginning my journey into the realm of bowel turning; to date this the most useful tutorial I've viewed regarding the basic use of the bowel gouge.
Glad it was helpful! Check out my full Bowl Gouge Playlist. kzhead.info/channel/PLoJyGhc4_JBELkkEKhRb-05iJ_6U2uKXB.html Happy Turning!
I'm new to turning. I have a lathe and chisels handed down from a family member. I think I have a bowl gouge, but my gougelooks different from the one demonstrated in the video. I took an introduction to turning class that emphasized spindle turning. I found this video to be incredibly helpful. The principles of body control and muscle memory gained through patient practice resonate completely with what I learned from the class. I'm looking forward to exploring your other introductory videos. Thanks for sharing your expertise on this channel.
Welcome Charles! So glad you are here and getting started. Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! Enjoy the whole process and keep moving forward no matter what. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Kent you are a master turner, but beside that you are an amazing teacher. Thanks so much 😊
I have been turning pens for a few years now and I go to craft fairs with a friend that makes small chests. I am going to make small boxes on my small Harbor Freight lathe. I have been watching KZhead videos on "How To" makes bowls. I have just ordered my first bowl gouge and am now learning how to use it. Your video on how to use a bowl gouge is the first one that I have watched. It was easy to understand, thank you.
Thank you, and Welcome! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I am not sure how many time I have watched this video. This is at least my 3rd or 4th time. It always helps me to think about the fundamentals of turning as I progress into trying more projects. I saw new things today, or at least I was familiar enough with some things that others broke through. thanks.
Glad to hear it's helping Jim. Happy Turning!
I have been turning pens and a couple other small items , I’ve wanted to take a class on turning but it never seams to fall on my schedule. A couple months ago I met a fellow that is one of the instructors at our area wood store and he has been going over some of the basics , I watch him turn a bowl and of course it looks super simple. You can guess the rest of that story I knew you had to hold the gouge a certain way but I did not understand what it was 100% until I watched this video I’m super excited to go put this new found knowledge into practice. I’ve really become fond of watching your videos your not in a hurry to get through the process as fast as possible and I’ve noticed you repeat key points Thank you for your time and instructions
Thanks Robert! Guess what? I have classes THAT DO FIT YOUR SCHEDULE. ;) Check them out www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/courses All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thank you for the information. I'm brand new turner at age 83. Last one I turned was in 9th grade shop class. Of course, back then I knew it all and didn't need any instructions. But now that I've grown older and wiser, I need all the help I can get. I have really struggled with tool rest positions, gouge angles and positions and have had numerous catches, some close to a disaster. Your clear and concise explanation is a gold mine. Thank you, Happy New Year and God Bless.
I just bought some used tools from a disabled gentleman in Odessa, and being a teacher, like his wife, he gave me a heck of a deal for everything...I will try and use my bowl gouge this week.... I'll send you pics... thank you
Sounds great Al! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I'm new to turning, I have never used a bowl gouge. However, after watching this (and other of your videos), I am looking forward to getting a couple. Great information here. I saved this video, so I can watch it again. Thank you so much for your efforts to help the rest of us learn, and or do things properly and safely. Keep doing what your doing Kent.
Ed, You can do it. Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! Happy Turning! Kent
16:05 been really struggling with catches. This explains everything well and told me exactly what I was doing wrong. I’ve only been turning for a few months so this will help improve my skill level. Thanks!
Fantastic! Thanks for watching. All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
I started off using carbide turning tools, but now I’m retired I want to learn proper technique with the normal tools, so am going to watch all your instructional videos. You explain quite clearly and am enjoying the videos, thanks. Liked and subscribed
Thank you, Bartman for joining. If you want to get going quickly, check out my Bowl Gouge Mastery and Tool Sharpening courses www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/shop I think you will be amazed how fast these will help you grow your skills. All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
I am Marion‘s husband and a novice wood turner. you’re very clear instructions are excellent and my wood turning has improved so much from seeing your online videos. Thank you
I'm inheriting my dad's lathes and tools. They're not here yet and it's driving me crazy to watch Kent's videos because they are so well done and make me want to jump right it to practice. These are informative and well presented. Thank you Kent!
David, That's awesome. Patience is a virtue…or something like that. LOL I hope you're up and turning soon. Enjoy the whole process. Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! Happy Turning! Kent
Thank you for the video, especially the overhead camera angle showing the tool angle coming in was so helpful. I always struggled with my bowl gouge, I can’t wait to get back on the lathe. Jeff
Jeff, You are welcome. I'm glad this helped and thrilled you're getting back on your lathe. Happy Turning!
Great clarity. Started turning about 3mo. ago. I fired up to view your other videos. This was the first I seen. Thanks. Now a subscriber
Ken, Thank you for writing and sharing! And welcome! Be sure to dive into my website too, there's a ton of info there. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
With this video and the Riding the Bevel video I can see what I am doing wrong, many thanks again. Most other videos do not show enough of the tool action, this really makes a difference to us novices.
WooHoo! Great to hear! Yes, I'm trying to help you see the path. Glad you're getting it! Happy Turning!
Coincidentally I just destroyed a small bowl blank and I basically used that gouge like a weapon. Finally I ended up tearing the bottom out. I woke up this morning and found this topic on my KZhead feed. It must have been providence.
I’m smiling because we’ve all been there. I hope this video helps. Take some pressure off yourself with some waste wood and just practice smooth cutting passes over and over. You’ll get it! All the best to you. Happy turning.
This is my first time turning. I'm learning a lot from you and very excited to take some of your classes!
Wonderful Nabil! Enjoy the whole process! Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Long time woodworker, but just starting out on turning. Very informative video, look forward to more.
Welcome and Thank you, Mike! Dig into my video list and you'll have plenty of info. Happy Turning! Kent
First time watching First time bowl turner. Just got my lathe
Enjoy Ken! Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Kent, I must commend you on a patient and detailed video. I will certainly search for more of your educational turning techniques. I just picked up my first lathe for the shop, and was searching for some helpful tips before diving into my first project. This video gave me good solid basic tips I need to be confident in that first endeavor. Kudos to you, and I look forward to learning more from you !
Thanks David. Yes, I have plenty more here and on my website www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/ Dive in and enjoy the learning process. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thank you for this video. I've turned a few bowls. I spent this past weekend making 2 bowls. 1 before I watched your gouge videos and 1 after. The 1st one I had catches & grain tearout, like my few previous bowls. The second bowl, after watching your videos, went much smoother. I made the bowl look how I wanted it to, rather than just going thinner until I got all of the gouges from catches out.
Awesome, Glad I could help! Thank you for sharing! Happy Turning!
Hey Kent, Having just watched your Bowl gouge dont do this video I came over and watched this one as well. I have every intention of mastering the bowl gouge in time. Believe me I have taken a beating from learning to turn, so much so that at one point my girlfriend wanted me to sell my lathe. I told her no of course and I am still doing it and she loves the things I make. Point is I never give up on something I want. I does not matter how difficult it is I will eventually get there. Yall have a wonderful day.
Would love to say ty for explaining the difference in the tools and the tools. Got no experience with wood and was lost .
Michael, glad to help. Happy Turning! Kent
Nice video. I dont have a bowl gouge jet. I am still turning between spindels, with a lot of fun. Now i want to hollow out some pieces. What size gouge is the most usefull to start with?
Go for it! My main bowl gouge is a 1/2", which is the outer diameter. The flute is 3/8" wide. All the best to you! Be sure to check out my Tool Sharpening for Bowl Turning eCourse.
This will be my first time in turning. I have watched others turning but you have given the best guidance for me so far. Don’t get me wrong, some of the other fellas age good. They just haven’t explained the methods as well as you. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Best video I have seen. Photography was excellent in terms of how the gouge should be presented to the wood.
Glad you enjoyed it Gib! Thank you and Happy Turning!
Thank you!!You are a very pedagogical teacher!! NOW i understand!!!Thank you and thank you again!!
Glad it was helpful! Happy Turning!
I tried using a bowl gouge for the first time this morning. Your video explains why I had a miserable time doing it!
Glad I could help! BTW, we all did that at first. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
My first time to use bowl gouge!
Fantastic Danya! Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Again , thank you so much..I am a beginner and soaking up as many as your videos I can..thanks for your time and the service you provide
My pleasure Bob! Thank you, and Happy Turning!
Díky, s nástrojem začínám, video mi pomohlo k lepšímu pochopení.
Fantastický! Ano, tento nástroj je jednoduchý a komplikovaný současně. Cvičení bude perfektní. Užijte si a šťastné otáčení!
What an excellent teacher you are!
Wow, thank you Gavin! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Loved the closeup at the top so the rotation of the gouge was visible. The first part of the video seemed to show the gouge turned so the flute was straight up. Well done and clearly explained.
Thanks. I try to make the shots as clear as possible. Glad you like!
Excelent video!!
Extremely helpful video for a beginner
Glad you like this one!
I have been working with wood for decades and have turnted several bowls including segmented bowls. But I have been out of my shop for nearly two years and found I had lost many ot the skille i had owned. I found this video helpful as a refresher. Thsnks.
Just beginning my wood turning journey. I have not tried to use my bowl gouge yet, but after this great lesson I will be trying first thing tomorrow
Wonderful! Let us know how it goes. Happy Turning!
really instructive video. a) close up of the tool position when turning b) you repeat things which is a real good teaching technique for me. Thanks!
Thank you, John! Happy Turning!
Yet another great video by Kent. I especially appreciate the excellent camera angles with plenty of close-ups.
Only wish my high school teacher’s would have explained as through as Kent. Easy to understand and get the concept of how to use various tools. Going to buy some videos soon.
Thank you, Steve. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
You explain tools and operations on turnning extremely well. Thanks so much ,Glenn from Austalia
You are very welcome, Glenn. Happy Turning!
GREAT VIDEO!
New to turning and this is so helpful. Thank you. The only benefit of experiencing a catch is to know what one feels like. Then they are no fun!
That's about right. ;) Happy Turning!
man, what a great explanation!!
Just trying to learn. Thanks so much.
Thanks Kent, very helpful :)
Good info. Thanks
Great instruction, thanks
I turned my first bowl last week and had several problems. This video really helped clear things up.
Going to get my first bowl gouge I have been turning for a week now and love it thank you so much
Started woodworking just before the holidays making charcuterie and cutting boards, then started hand carving farm style dough bowls. Will be buying my first lathe in the morning from the profits I’ve earned. Haven’t had a woodworking course on a lathe since high school wood shop (1988). Have learned a lot from your videos. Thank you!
That is awesome Kevin! Thank you for writing and sharing! Happy Turning!
Really helpful
Well produced and presented.
Thank you for this video, I had lost confidence using the bowl gouge as I kept catching (not nice) I’m not there yet but I’m getting better 👍🏻
thanks for great thoughtful instruction
Really helpful thank you 😊
Awesome video! Clear, concise and super photographic technique shows what you are teaching.
Thanks - very simple and clear - best I have seen on working with a bowl gouge
Wow, thanks! Much appreciated! Happy Turning!
Been using the lath for decades , but learned more watching your video in all the time I've been working. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Wow! So glad this was helpful for you! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Great teaching video
Great videos Kent. I bought an Ellison gouge and looking forward to using it.
I bought 2 bowl gouges (1/2" and 3/8") almost a year ago, but have been reluctant to use them and reverted to my carbide cutters. I'm determined to learn how to use these tools and after watching this video I think I "got" the concept, so, I'm headed to the lathe to make some shavings out of a volunteer from my pile of blanks.
Awesome! I'm so glad this video helped. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
@@TurnAWoodBowl UPDATE: It sure did! After realizing how the tool actually works and that I wasn't going to get any catches, I proceeded with the gouge all the way through the process and produced a pretty nice maple bowl by the end of it! Thanks!
Thank you. Made a lot more sense than others I have watched. After gouging and catching the daylights out of a chunk of now firewood wood on my lathe, in desperation, I went back to KZhead, and I found this video. I have a recommendation. I laughed when you said to just grab some wood and start practicing. You never said anything about creating a tenon or recess for the chuck, or even using a faceplate. I would hope you have videos for that as well. Now I am off to find your video on how to hollow....without throwing the bowl off the lathe.
I just bought a lathe and of course a bowl gauge. Looking at another tutorial I sharpened the gauge 40/40 and used it as described by a professional wood turner. It scared the life out of me! Catch upon catch. Thank you for showing how to use this gauge in a safe way.
My pleasure. Glad to help. Happy Turning!
I’m just starting out.. very helpful
Excellent
You are brilliant at your presentation!
I've been watching wood turning for the past several weeks. I find it facinating and relaxing. I don't own any equipment, and told my hubby I want a lathe for Christmas. I'm afraid he might actually get me one, so I will continue watching lots of channels and different techniques. I guess I can finish by saying that I don't work anymore because I have metastatic breast cancer and I just turned 62 years old. Can I really do this? This is the only channel I have commented on. You are a good teacher.
Debbie, Thank you for writing. YES! You can do this!!! If you haven't already seen my website, go spend some time there. And start by reading this article about Why Turn Wood Bowls. ;) turnawoodbowl.com/why-make-turn-wood-bowls All the best to you! Kent
Thank you for such a useful lesson. Will go and try out what I have learnt,
Thank you Kent! Love your videos! I have 3 bowl gouges that I’m just starting to learn to use thanks to your videos. Now just to get them sharp!!
Hands down the best bowl turning tutor this beginner has found. Gives me new hope!!
Just beginning to turn and your videos are great, I’ve learned so much watching your videos, Thank You Kent
Best instructions yet.
Thank you!!!
I’m a beginner and loved your video 👍🏽
Awesome! Thank you! I remember being there and I'm doing my best to help ease through all those steps. It's all about persistence. Just keep trying, learning, and practicing and you'll be making your dream bowls! Happy Turning!
Thank You. Having just started I make(made) all of the errors you highlighted.
Michael, we all do. The important thing is to learn and keep moving forward. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Great info. Thank you!😊
Glad it was helpful Joshua! Happy Turning!
Never tried but i will! Well filmed and clearly put over
Thank you for the tutorial will put it to practice…:):) Yiannis (Athens Greece)
My pleasure and thank you for taking the time to comment, from Greece! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Another really great video. Thanks!
You’re welcome, and thank you!
I've been doing spindle work for a couple months and am now ready to start making some plates and bowls.
Thank you. This video is very helpful for new woodturners.
Thanks for sharing!
You bet! Happy Turning!
Used bowl gauge for first time today then watched your video and yes all the incorrect ways to use it l was doing. Thanks for your advice very helpful and hope l will improve
Glad it helped Peter! All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
Very helpful video. I am a old worker but a novice wood turner. Your visuals and verbal descriptions are helpful.
Fantastic, thanks for sharing David! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Beginner wood turner, just learning to use a bowl gouge. Your video helped a lot. Thanks.
I am new to turning and this video is amazingly clear about the position of the tool and using body movement to advance the cut. It is really going to help me😊
Glad it was helpful, Annette! Happy Turning!
Truly amazing video. Thanks. Step by step explaining how to and also how not to and why not. Happy New Year and many good ‘turns.
