David Mitchell is a living legend. From Ireland 👍👍👍🇮🇪
This show is the equal of the Blackadder series....love what they do with Will Shakespeare! Bravo!!!!!
Its not at all. Blackadder is funny. This is barely amusing
it is my opinion...i don't care what you think "know it all" bag...bye@@zapkvr
Take no notice , this a very clever , very witty show - which obviously passes over the head of some !😂
I find Upstart Crow is much better. @@zapkvr
Agreed. I would say it's even better. Though I think more people would prefer Blackadder. I really think you need to know a bit about Shakespeare to fully appreciate Upstart Crow.
"Romeo and Julian was but a working title"😂
That was so funny I laughed a lot at that 😂
Early exploratory stuff. It meant of nothing 🤣
I like how David Mitchell basically just plays versions of himself in different guises and it doesnt matter because its great.
'Nobody says "forsooth" anymore, mum, it's Medieval' 😂
Wittiest and best thing Ben Elton has written in years.
This makes Shakespeare come to life.
Lol shake spear. Wayne Kerr
Watched the whole thing twice through on the iPlayer. I was sceptical at first, but after a couple of episodes, I binged through it all. I completely get why some aren't into it - you have to concentrate at times. Absolutely belongs in the Blackadder canon in my humble opinion.
*Mitchell is trully one of the best*
Some of most hilarious bits were when he was asked by Ann (Lisa Tarbuck) how his journey back from London had gone😂😂😂
Such a shame the Beeb didn’t renew. An excellent sitcom
As a Shakespeare fan I'm so glad to find this. Stopped watching the BBC years ago and occasionally they provide us with a gem like this.
Me thinks Shakespeare himself would be impressed by this; in fact, I think he would seethe with envy!
I just love the way they play with words, and ideas. Brilliant.
My first experience of this, though I have seen David Mitchell as guest on other things. I really like this style of humour and communication.
"I thought I was outside my own body watching meself die!" 😂😂
GREAT SITCOM!!! ESPECIALLY THE XMAS ONE IN "ISOLATION" DUE TO COVID!!!😃😄😅😂👍👍👍
How to connect kids with Shakespeare?.....this 😁
Great to see Paula Wilcox again. Loved Man About the House back in the day.
Takes me back to Blackadder
David would love to hear that
@@jerbear7952 I'm guessing that's what he was going for. And he succeeded
Both created by the same man - Ben Elton
@@galinageorgieva8554 I have always loved Ben Elton’s work - as a writer rather than a stand-up. He is a grown-up talking to grown-ups.
@@belindamay8063he's a brilliant writer, but an awful actor 😂
I had not watched until just recently, but I am enjoying Upstart Crow so very much. Wish I hadn't waited so long.
Good to see Mark Heap, what a great actor, especially in Green Wing.
Friday night diner tooo
Great show, very clever and well done. Thanks.
Kemp is channelling Ricky Gervais, me thinks.
39:30 solidified that for me
What a great cast. I’ve loved Paula Wilcox since the 70s, how come she still looks the same? Although it would have been a nice touch to have Kathy Burke playing opposite Harry Enfield: those two star-crossed lovers Wayne & Wynetta Slob united in history 😍
Saw it on stage 3 times. Absolutely wonderful there as well.
I was booked for a 3rd visit but it closed due to Covid lockdown!!
I LOVE "Upstart Crow". One thing I find especially funny is the way Will rips commuting during every episode: "the 2 hr. delay to change the coach wheel", etc. (I used to do a lot of business travel).
It's a nod to Leonard Rossiter's 'Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin'
I Thought this was brilliant, I was turned on to David Mitchell's comedy as well as Lee Mack and many others. Heading across the pond soon, I have to get my English on!! Truly hope to catch some live shows. Hats off to a great cast!! Di
Bloody brilliant!❤
39:45 I just realized that might be a community reference for the bottle episode and cannot take that out of my head 😂
"Yook, Dad, honestly, just 'yook'!" "Dad, no one talks like this! I sound like a complete turnip!" No more so than that accent of yours make you sound, love! Yook!
The "star" at 1.13.51sounds like Russell Brand . Some of you may have heard of him.
Many thanks!
I was gobsmacked to discover the real meaning of ‘Wherefore’ today. I had never bothered to look it up and it wasn’t covered when I was at school. We did Julius Caesar.
We did Twelfth Night. Where the yellow stockings and cross garter trick comes from.
loved his daughter...
The right proper bitchington.
Harry Enfield innit? Brilliant !
Is David acting or is this just him!!! LOL
Love Green, Jim from Fridays for Dinner.
@robindixon. Yes, brilliant actor. A complete original. Wasn’t he in Green-Wing as well ?
Keep wishin M8 history's on my side!
It's Bob! 37:00!
Very similar. Embarrassingly so.
For a scouser, Liza does a pretty fair black country accent!
I thought it was supposed to be Brummie? After all Stratford is nearer Brum.
She is RADA trained.
I am sorry to say this but this is the first time I have seen this program, how did I miss this, I am sorry that I can not find it online to watch it as full episodes and all seasons, Zoechip has not got this show. I do like Davids's work as he is always funny, So if you know of a place where I may find this being shown on line please do let me know thank you all.

Robert Greene is very Harvey Korman as Hedley Lamarr.
To gawp or not to gawp
Gotta love the late 1500 s .
Mail show Venice star soul..... Oh, that Kate......😀🤔🙂🙂😲😲
Didn't know Gervaise had an annoying twin.
Brent and it's deliberate.
53:13 I wonder why does that sound so familiar?
Quite a shame that the episodes are abridged.
You missed the new Holland honeyeater
Why is there someone doing a ricky gervais impersonation ? What did he have to do with Shakespeare. Does anyone know a Shakespearean joke ?
The Gervais impression is there because it's funny. They're presenting Shakespeare's England as a place that has competing talents working multiple styles in an evolving art form. Gervais is recognizable enough as representing one 'stream' of contemporary comedy. Kempe actually was known for his unique comedy style of semi-improvised performance apparently inspired by the commedia dell'arte (the stage jig), which is also obliquely referenced in the story about musical theatre. Plus, Gervais is a bit of a tit. So it's funny, innit?
The David Brent impression is probably for people who aren't that interested in Shakespeare, but laughed at The Office. I couldn't see how it was allowed, but I also can't see Gervais attacking Elton about it.
@@MantisEnergy I think they tried to cast as broad a net as possible, considering they're trying to make a Shakespeare-based show and the expected market for pure Shakespeare isn't that great. I'd imagine Gervais probably didn't mind the reference because Kempe was pretty well-known and somewhat of a celebrity in his own right... But if Gervais didn't like it, what's he going to do? Cry about it?
@@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg I doubt Ricky would care, probably less than I do. I can't help but see it as a very strange graft.
@@MantisEnergy I don't see how it would be 'graft'.
Please add way more ads as occasionally they are interrupted by some english types nattering on.
@pressureworks - Try another ad blocking program. Alternating, hit the "Stop Ads" button on the right side of the screen.
Do you think these channels put the ads in?
@@jerbear7952 yes yes they do. They chooose to monetize their videos and put in as many ads as possible.
@@pressureworks It seems we have little choice. Ads are always with us - like Winter Flu. And they get worse.. In the past they were time- regulated. But government regulations were steadily relaxed (I wonder why?). It’s worse on the main channels. The ads are noisy and chaotic: they seem to be aimed at inattentive 5-year-olds.

pm 1.6.23 🔴 LIVE: Best of David Mitchell from Upstart Crow Series 1 & 2 | BBC Comedy Greats 2002pm 1.6.23 his insistence on schmaltz being allowed to muddy the waters of some fine sketches spoils it for me - i was musing upon a box set but.... i might have to plump for thin blue line instead...
this is a sitcom not a sketch show.

@24:45 When Will doth profusely proclaim that only ever has his wife's tuffted lady grotto has been accepting of his upstanding purple-helmed stranger, has mine eyes and pantaloons wet with much mirthsome laughter induced leakages, and sore ribs & face muscles from similarily induced grinnings to seem a Cheshire cat alike.
Whys that fella mimicing Ricky Gervais? Could get his own style? Otherwise hilarious
That's the way Ben Elton wanted the character played
Am I mistaken or is that Voldemort? 😮 57:11
Yes. You are.
It's actor Tim Downie
Methinks Kate doth protest too much about Will's stream of consciousness invention of popular phrases of yhe future.
If that was the best bits, I fear the rest of it. Poor attempt at replicating Black Adder.
Rugby union is really struggling in Oz, competing with NRL, cricket and even footie which are all doing well, and this team reflects the lack of talent and depth that Union has in the few states that actually play rugby. Very sad and they need a team if they are to leaverage from their own world cup, otherwise it will be an expensive and poorly supported event
Unable to locate the funny.
does "Live" here just mean a cycle on, not off? I want a better definition.
Could have been a classic, but some awful casting wrecked it.
Peep show is better
‘Best’ is a little hyperbolic
Is it canned laughter? None of Harry's lines are funny. Only a few minutes in but so far this is absolute dog plops.
They BBC didn’t renew it because it is a fantastic repeating sketch in a sketch series like That Mitchell and Web Look but it’s DEFINITELY NOT a stand alone sitcom, because he’s tortuously levering in all his plays as a backdrop to the episode , wether it’s funny or not it gets stale and old very quickly in my view . There was way more than enough of these made , it was already a little thin on content and hence why it wasn’t renewed …. In my humble opinion 👀 👍🏴
It had 3 series, plus a West end stage version. All very popular & successful.
@@KatMusic2009 only 3 series tells you how popular it was . The stage show is a different genre , everybody likes a night out . I did say being fair that it was merely my opinion . 👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering Three series is perfectly respectable and it isn't proof that a show is unsuccessful. Not everything is Seinfeld or Friends, nor does it need to be.
@@Oleg_K. as is offering the exaggerated end of an argument to PROVE that argument… in my humble opinion ! And to prove it I’ll list a few UK comedy series which did more than 3 series … Red Dwarf The Good life One foot in the grave Still Game Birds if a feather My family My parents are aliens Not going out Men behaving badly Shameless Mr Bean Shall I go on ? That’s only the ones I can remember off the top of my head . They are the middling remembered series that prove my argument, note I didn’t include The Guvnor of ALL UK tv series as that would be an exaggeration. Nuff said …🎤drop 👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering Yes, there are longer running shows than Upstart Crow, as well as more successful ones. Still, having three seasons is not a mark in either direction. You're listing things in vain. The mere fact that Fawlty Towers exists, with it's _measly_ 2 seasons, is enough of an example that seasons do not always correspond with success or influence. Also, since you mentioned, Mr. Bean ran for a few years, sure, but is still only regarded as having one season with 15 episodes. However, that's not the point. Longer or better shows do not disprove the fact that 3 seasons, of any quality, is nothing to scoff at.
Gosh this is a bit unfunnily excremental
you're very mistaken
I love David Mitchell but this series tries to cram feminism too deep down our throats.
Right? I mean, putting a female in a show? What are they thinking?
@@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg Elizabethan period joke?
Indeed, poorly disguised bbc wokleytons... and no attempt to disguise the writers' jealousy of master Ricky Gervais much larger and sought-after codlingtons.
Lol i guess he should have been misogynst to make you happy.
@@Joe-Kingthe Gervais burns are arguably the best bit. But at least now all the fake outrage makes sense.
Not very funny

I find it very funny. Do you care? Do you understand why your comment is pointless?

Too much Kate in this comp
What a shame you have resorted to canned laughter.
Needed it because a real audience would not have uttered a titter.
