Can This Audi Engine Be SAVED? Coolant Mixing into Oil
Oil mixing with coolant is normally a head gasket. This Audi engine wasn't a bad head gasket, but still had oil and coolant mixing issues. This video we flush the engine oil in an attempt to save the engine. The best repair for coolant in the oil is a full engine teardown to check/replace bearings. This car is NOT WORTH THAT!

All I can say is this, sir you are an absolute rock star! Thank you for doing all that you do for the community.
You, sir, are a legend! The only bad thing about your videos is that they end! =( Thanks for the hard work and all the information you provide. Cheers from Brazil!
I love how honest you are about if that was the better route. Love the content man!
It was definitely worth a save. Do keep us updated on long term reliability & mileage.
Thanks for educating me on my VW vehicles love your videos and content. Great job keep it up.
Killed it as always Charles. thank you.
Awesome video. I am a big believer in flushing an engine when they gunk up. Good job man.
As opposed to promoting more buildup?
@@sursomsatan1225 No some people only replace the filter and change the oil once, while he changed the oil until it ran "clear" and cleaned the oil pan 2X of the residue.
Hey charles! Love the content even if it doesnt apply to me. You always make entertaining videos and i learn something from you. Just want to say thank you!
I really appreciate that ! THANK YOU
"Better call Paul" - pretty catchy. He should use that as a slogan. :) And - btw. - I'd have done exactly as you did, C. I would perhaps, just out of curiosity, send the last flush sample to be analyzed too see how much coolant remained - if any.
Looks like Bob Ross mixing paint in the intro
Thank you Charles! Same problem with my daughters Audi q5 and replaced the PCV...working like a champ. Made me look like a master mechanic to my family. ha
That ending where you cut the see right before was beautiful 🤣
I've been watching your videos for years. You are amazing. Unfortunately, my daughter added power steering fluid (ATF) to the coolant reservoir of her 2015 Tiguan and drove a few weeks. Any recommendations besides flushing several times with distilled water?
I’ve had to replace a few engines on my Subaru. I like that you love Audis and VWs, HumbleMechanic!
Keep it up humble mechanic 🦾🦍🔧🧑🏼🔧🏴☠️
"A little noise from the timing chain, it's fine...." FORESHADOWING! 🤣
Awesome videos Charles! Thanks you are the man.
Awesome video yet again from the one and only Humble mechanic 👌 Reminds me or how I like to treat the inside of my engine and customer's when servicing, I'll always change oil first before using a flush (if the engine oil is too old or feels physically garbage) Then it's the safest way to thoroughly flush the engine without much risk of further damage.. Liqui MOLY for the win 💪 I use their flush, conditioner and fuel treatments, I also use LUCAS oil treatments and BG products 👌 Love the attention to detail in all your videos thankyou for the content Much 💜 from the UK
Ok Charles, here's one for ya. 2006 Honda Ridgeline. The oil cooler/ radiator cracked and antifreeze into the oil. Replaced radiator..So, the system was drained and we added water and a dawn dish washing liquid, did that eight times cooling system .. obviously and a few oil changes with sea foam and refilled with factory authorized VW coolant (kidding) and sent it..i understand that this is Audi VW show but guess what.. the pistons go up and down, the wheels go round and round... you're a good teacher by the way. I wonder if there is a way known to man to re-engineer the pcv system on that engine?
Charles, you just broke my world! I've done probably 15-20 oil changes with LiquiMoly and I never realized there was an oil change sticker ON THE BOTTLE. I'm so mad at myself for never noticing this. How could you do this to me?
Hahah that’s how I felt when I learned that!
Huh I never noticed either. But I do 5k intervals on my ‘19R so it’s hard to keep track… unfortunately my alternator last month failed 1000 miles out of warranty, and it gave my its first epc & cel last week… suspecting injectors 🤦♂️ I also went eqt stage 1 right after my warranty ended so no chance of getting either of those covered anymore…
Just a little noise from the timing chain - its fine Outstanding video
Another awesome video!! Now it is time to work on the TT!!😀😀
Welcome back, Iv missed you lol
Bravo.. I wish I was there to work with you.. Machine's, Repairing, Maintenance, Overall care, etc.. Love from India.
@@Main_HumbleMechanic Thanks! Dipak here
Awesome video. I have same noise from timing chain I already done timing chain tensioner changed. does it me make me worry?
Hey love you videos. I was just wondering if you could do a video with best and worst VW/Audi engines. Looking to buy and Audi 2023 Audi S3 or a Golf R. Or maybe tell me what you think of those engines. Thanks
Great stuff. I have an issue (bpy mk5) where my oil is getting diluted by gas. I've put in fresh injectors, followed by a new pump. Still getting dilution. I did reuse my autotech hpfp internals on the new pump then put it back to stock but it made no difference. Gas is mixing with my oil. Any advise on what to check?
Hey man I want your honest opinion. I own the A4 B8 2.0 TFSI since 2011. The engine was using 1l oil per 1000km. I got a new Audi motor in 2014 for free as the car was under warranty. Since then no oil usage, just the cooler went bad in 2020. Now the car has 190,000km & it is running perfect. Would you sell the car or keep it for another 200,000km?
Great job Charles, like new again👌👍🙂
Of course it was the right course of action what you did. No need for opening up an engine if that process fixes it and it was the pcv that caused all of this..
What sealant did you use?
Good work
hi charles have you ever seen fault16346 rom error 014 defective before on a a3 8p also no coms to cluster but everything works? i had keys programmed to cluster 3 months ago but i like to hear your take on it cheers from down under

man I have a question for you about chain deviation in 3.0T CAJ. I am logging 12 KW degrees on one bank and I believe 10 in the other one. This is clearly a problem with the timing of the chains. I do have the service manual (PDF) but the: "how to put the engine on time after losing time" section is not there. Can you please help me?
EPR by BG is an awesome engine flush restoration additive, you should do a video on it
My oil looks like after 2nd and 3rd flush, after doing a headgasket? It was the first load of oil since fixing the issue, is coolant still entering oil,
Charles totally off subject, but I noticed you have LiquiMoly banners up and what not, as far as 508 oils are concerned, which one do you like the best and why? Just curious from a VW mechanics point of view. Thanks 👍
What’s the part number on that Mann oil filter? Looks like an oil filter we use on a converted Mercedes engine for aviation use.
Can you get your hands on a 99-05 (MK4 ish) 01M transmission? If so, can you do a video on them and their reliability, or lack thereof.
Any follow up on this after a year the engine ok? Or it starts put it on for trade-in?
I was looking into a b8 s4 and thanks to this and your recent video on this I know about the pcv coolant issue (all euro pcv is shit) informative video! Meeting you in person and seeing your vids after it’s crazy how you’re the same person 🤣
The comment about being the same person means the world to me! Thank you
Well, I did not have this specific issue, but I got a low oil pressure on my Audi A4 2.0 TFSI four days after I bought it, that was a bummer, and I was so close to my house and decided to drive the last few hundred meters, lucky only the turbo died, and judging by the amount of oil in the intercooler it was already in bad shape so I guess it's not a big deal. but yeah, the oil pickup was full of gunk causing the low oil pressure. It was a pain in the as to take off the oil pan, I had never struggled so hard taking an oil pan off a car before. It's up and running now and I been driving it for a few months, but it had 273K Kilometers on it and I did not pull the whole engine apart, I just put a new turbo on and tried it. But it uses a lot of oil, both before and after the turbo change. I don't know if flushing can help with that.
I have a AUDI Q3 diesel engine same complaint as engine oil mix in coolants
Does this issue also occur on the 3 lower turbo engine?
Hello Charles, I have an Audi q7 with the 3.0TFSI engine. There is coolant inside my engine. However, the coolant-oil mixture hasn't circulated through the radiator to the expansion tank. I have checked the oil cooler and I can't find the oil-coolant mixture. I am suspecting my coolant pump to be bad. Could this be a head gasket that is blown? How do I know the bank of the head gasket that is blown if that's the cause of the milky mixture? What else should I check before attempting the head gasket. Many thanks.
1.9 tdi PD. This engine got me mad years ago (and still), the fker mixed drop by drop the oil in the coolant system passing throught the head gasket, the coolant was fine but after some months the coolant looks really bad. What a pain in the ass, amazing engine, amazing troubles...
One very important question is do you know JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOR?
The best thing about Royal Purple oil is that if you forget the drain plug on the sump you can see it on the concrete.
Hi Charles, I have a similar problem on a VW Passat B7 the thing is that the oil cap didnt have mayonnaise lol (coolant mixed with oil) and so neither the dipstick. I thought it was the oil filter housing assembly which has the oil cooler attached into it, so I replaced it with a new one and tried to flush it but it keeps mixing oil with the coolant. I havent done a full drain the engine oil but I dont think I shoud since there is no mix on the oil cap or the dipstick. But heres the thing, it keeps mixing after replacing the oil filter housing and when you rev it spits a few drops of water form the exhahut. Tbh I dont now if its condensation or Im about to lose my mind with this car. I read online about the oil cooler, sometimes it fails too and you have to replace it in order to stop the mixing. Any suggestions on what should I do next?
Thank you Charles. Would you consider making a video on changing the diff fluid on the MK7 R?
I think I have? Wait have I? Lol I did my mk4, it’s pretty much the same. Hahahha now I have no idea
@@HumbleMechanic You're right! Somehow I completely missed that video.
Can you do a ko3/ko4 rebuild video
Pure logic
I’m still waiting for some 3.6 videos Heck I’d lend you my car for some since it needs the chains done anyways but I believe I’m a bit far for that
Creo que vale la pena hacer todo ese trabajo siempre y cuando se elimine la raíz del problema: porqué se mezcló el refrigerante con aceite? si se evalúa que la reparación no es costosa y que la salud del motor no se haya visto afectada
Hey Charles, what about oil in the coolant?
I’m like, how does he know people put their hand behind products in make-up reviews, then I’m like… why do I know that too? 😂
😂😂😂
Just a little noise from the timing chain, it's fine. 🙂
Great video. I like the joke about reading the directions for the LIQUI MOLY engine flush. There aren't any. Not even an indication that it goes in the oil hole and not the gas hole. I like their stuff. Just think it's funny they don't put any directions on how to use it on the can.
This is among my top 5% channels, I just wish you'd do more builds, tying together the knowledge-oriented content you produce. Sure I can go somewhere else for VAG builds but lose out on your personality doing so
Thank you!!! Builds are coming I have several in the pipe!
Notification squad Have a nice weekend!🔥🔥🔥
Really not the subject of the video but nice wheels, what is the make/model?
Hy! that water was comming from somewere maybe on hy tempereture that mean that the cylider gasket may be damage or gas cooler gasket or gascooler itself
Awesome video as usual! But oh man, you should make that outro like a meme or something: "Just a little noise from the timing chain! it's fine!". At least the mazdaspeed community will cheer in some sort of planetary chorus at fixed hours every day for several months in a row :)
Hahhahaha
Great video, however the oil filter clips into the cap and then is inserted into the housing. There are tabs on the cap for the filter to grab into.
Now, why would I do that Spammer.....
Could you make a video on how to change the break rotors and pads on vehicles with an Electronic Parking Brake? :)
To save money in a similar situation I've taken the oil out of other cars present to use for a flush. Those cars get an oil change and I don't feel like I'm totally wasting fresh oil.
You could have easily keep the flush for an hour or so and rev it up to around 3000rpm for 20-30 seconds every once in a while, I usually do that when changing the engine oil and it may clean the engine better than just 10 minutes of idling. There are also "long life" engine flushes available where you can drive a car reasonably for 30-50 kilometres before replacing the oil, that would've been great for this particular engine imo.
Liquimoly states to idle and not rev or drive. You don’t want the crude being knocked off to circulate at a elevated rpm to score the internal as the crap coming off is abrasive. Keep wrenching my friend.
@@TooBlessedToStress88 yeah Archoil states NOT to drive your car, yet their technician says you can drive no worries for around 50km, it's just a fail safe for the company
Milkshake is not what you want to see in an audi. I picked up a B6 A4 1.8t 5 speed with some good performance goodies that had a blown timing belt for super cheap. Made the mistake of getting a "tested" head on ebay. When got it I knew I should have taken it to the machine shop to test it all myself instead of just believing this place but I didn't. Ran great but after it got warmed up oil and coolant mixed very quickly. I thought maybe it was possibly my doing so I did it all over again triple checking everything with a better brand head gasket. Same thing. When it got warmed up... boom immediate mixture. Finally took it in to the machine shop and of course cyclinder 3 on the head had a crack and when it got warm it was expanding and mixing. I was pretty upset to say the least. It's a good thing I was constantly checking oil and I caught everything quick. With a proper rebuilt head and a few flushes it was good to go. But you just know even running 30 sec with coolant in it has some consequences. I'd say it just depends how long he was driving it after that coolant light hit. Awesome how a failed pvc can lead to total engine failure. Way to be Audi.
If there were pumpkin spice oil maybe I could get my wife to do her oil changes. 😂
Wouldn't it be worth checking the head gasket though if it was that it might be I think
How reasonable is it to work ob Audi cars? I'm planning on purchasing a 2017 - 2018 RS7 or S8 and would like to do some of the maintenence on my own
Basic maintenance can be challenging on the RS cars. Not hard, but not super easy. Look up some diys on it before starting
Are we gonna hear more about that mk1 tt from a while back? there was an engine build video a while back but I don't think there was anything else after that.
Im not going to put any videos out until the car is done. Then im gonna sell it.
@@HumbleMechanic Thanks for the reply! I'm excited to see the results I recently bought a mk1 tt and am fixing it up myself. Maybe your videos will give me inspiration for what I should do to mine in the future. Keep up the great work you are one of my favorite car KZheadrs especially due to your focus on VAG cars, and thorough but fun explanations of how to do even the trickiest repairs.🤩
Pull out that package of JB Weld, bubble gum, bailing wire and duct tape. Something in there should fix this right UP ! 😆
An alternative I learned from growing up on the farm fill the engine all the way up with diesel instead of oil and leave the cap open overnight and Then drain it What I mean by all the way up is literally all the way up to the cap and do not start the engine like that
It would be good to mention that the other 4 bolts for the oil cooler (besides the one that goes into the pan) are aluminum and will break the head off extremely easily if they are over torqued.
Could you quantify how good it would be?
hey, can u make a video where u change the upper chain tensioner ?
I may do that when we manual swap it
@@HumbleMechanic nice, can u show us the vcds steps when u swap it ?
That’s the stuff big Mac’s use for choco shakes lmao 🤣
How did it go, now that it's been over a year
Hey yall I need some advice. I have a stock mk4 gti with the 12v vr6. I want to keep it stock, but it rides really high stock. I want to put it on lowering springs, but im scared itll mess up the suspension geometry. Any advice?
Raceland coilovers if you want looks, KW coilovers if you want looks and performance. Just get it aligned after
I'm starting engineering at university in a couple of weeks. My Goal is to work somewhere at VAG (and convince engineers to use less plastic in engines lol)
LiquiMoly stuff is one of the few potions you should use in your car.
Can the coolant passages inside the PCV valve be plugged up to avoid coolant intrusion?
You’d have to reroute coolant I’d assume
I feel that if you don't check every other possibility before the headgasket.. its gonna be the headgasket 100%. Idk why
I will say short answer is yes you can save it...but long answer is if a gasket or a designed point of failure like a freeze plug it is not very terrible, but it is not always the go-to failure and then you have to ask yourself... "I believe I have the willpower to do this, but does my bank account?" Is it worth it again?
Did you shake the MOS2 before adding it like with Ceratec
I shake everything. Its an autopilot habit.
@@HumbleMechanic THANK YOU!!! i wish i could upload pics but i usualy tag you on my TIKTOKs, doing a full Liqui Moly fluid change on my MK4 Jetta
Coolant mixing into Oil. Well, thank God the oil didn't mix into the coolant system......wait......?? 😄
Why does my toyota not make the same choclate mix?
Chocolate coolant? Santa would love this
I have a question that stumps me, how and why is your oil and the water smoothly mixing without re-identifying as frothy milk or curd chunks blocking the internal jacket and heater core?
it won't in the HC because there was no oil in the coolant, it was coolant in the oil. But Im with ya, it was like permanently mixed.
@@HumbleMechanic thanks sorry I missed the part about it being a one way breech, but I had to look at the oil again because it looked like fuel flooded past the piston rings, but even that was a better viscosity than fuel logged oil. I am also having a bit of difficulty with trying to figure out how it could happen with modern management and intact block, but I really want to know what caused it to blend as well as it was.
Can all engines be saved if the head gasket blows
Is it more worth to upgrade the pcv system than putting oem parts
Great question. I didn't really search too deep for a PCV upgrade. But if there is one, probs worth it

*When your oil looks like this time to start praying* 🤣
I think the engine will be fine if you flush it out good enough. Modern engines can take a lot of abuse & continue working. I think it being slightly older has helped it.
