Start Your Next Watercolour With This Technique - IT'S A GAMECHANGER !!
Watercolour ghost, or mist wash method.
Very loosely based on a technique I saw the wonderful artist David Curtis use.
Obviously, I don't paint in the style of David Curtis, it was just an interesting technique !!

I am always very impressed when one artist (or actually, any professional) recommends the work of a contemporary. It tells me a lot. Thanks for this lesson.
Thank you. I always give credit where it’s due and David Curtis’ books taught me a huge amount
@@ChrisStephenArt Thanks!
You started with pencil?
@@Ashevillein Yes, I did a basic outline drawing with a soft pencil.
My father was an artist and loved painting boats in watercolour. Watching you do this painting was like watching him, you have a very similar style and technique. Thank you.
That’s lovely, Sadie. Thank you
Thank you for this, it was lovely watching you paint. Thank you for mentioning Curtis. I looked and he is amazing.
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching. David Curtis is one of the best, and although my style is very different from his, I learnt a huge amount from his books.
Beautiful! Thank you for a relaxing painting technique. Blessings to you!
You’re welcome! Thank you so much for watching
Watching you paint seems so natural to me ..I'm left handed also ... different than watching a right hander....looks great!
Thanks Ralph. There doesn’t seem to be many of us lefties making videos on KZhead. Glad you like mine !!
Thank you Christopher! Really a simple but very impressive painting! Love the wet in wet effects and the color. My favorite loosing style!

It’s amazing that I was so mesmerised by your painting, that I was 12 mins in before I realised you’re painting left-handed lol. Beautifully misty calm scene
Haha! That’s great. Glad you liked the video
Thankyou for your painting. I keep putting off trying because I'm not great at drawing or detail but you've inspired me to have a go.

You’re welcome! Thank you for watching 😊
Beautifully done
Thank you so much
Beautiful watercolour, I painted a similar one , but with the squiggles for the shadows under the boat I lightly spray after with water
Sounds good, I’m sure that produces some nicely diffused reflections
Awesome!
Thank you so much
Lovely!
Thanks so much
Wonderful painting! Great video . . . .
Thanks so much
Very beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I'm still a beginner at watercolour, but this ghost wash is going to come in handy. 🙂

You’re welcome! Thank you for watching
I do this too but I love the term “ghost wash”. Thanks. I will check out David curtis
Thanks! David Curtis is a genius
Lovely demo
Thank you so much
This is so beautiful and clever and helpful. Many thanks, if you could turn down the volume of the Muzak it would be perfect. I’m a person who simply has to pay attention to the music and I can’t concentrate on your tutorial as well as I want to. Incidentally I’m only interested in the painting but the music thing is just the way I’m made.
Glad you found the tutorial helpful. At the moment, the music is there in an attempt to cancel out the background noise in my studio. I’m trying to find a solution to this
I find a rigger really helps. Riggers made my railings, masts, scaffolding etc much more convincing. And easier to do.
I don’t like to mix rounds with riggers in the same painting, I find it achieves a more cohesive final result. But obviously it’s best to use whichever brush you like to use :)
Love watching you paint this - I too am left-handed and it helps me (a newbie) to watch a lefthanded painting tutorial. I love the ghost wash (it is something I've been thinking about, but have only been practicing strokes so far as I watch various tutorials). Do you mind sharing which blue and red you used for this painting? thanks
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video. I used ultramarine, cobalt blue and cadmium red.
Basically you build a shadow scaffold on which to build the work. I have always worked across the entire painting at once and it really helps to build a balanced composition. It does my head in when I see people on youtube painting a flower or whatever and they focus in on some small area, work it up completely and then move onto another tiny area and then work that to completion etc. Of course, people work in different ways and whatever gets you there is what you need to do, but I wonder if those who work in that way might find some freedom that they didn't know they were missing if they just tried to work the entire work at the same time. Lovely video.
Thanks very much. I find it fascinating how many different methods there are, and what works for one person may not work for another.
Great job! My boats always look like a 5yr old drew them, lol
Thank you!! Try drawing a different boat each day, just a simple pencil sketch. Your boats will improve :)
That's how I have always started all my watercolors, I quite like the name ghost wash, I've never heard it before. I am curious if you painted your boats first, how would you get your sky in after? Watercolors is normally done in a certain order because its translucent so it's not really a choice unless you do it with mixed media. Your painting is lovely by the way.
Thank you! There isn’t really any order that has to he followed. I suppose it’s knowing which approach to use for each subject.
The definition of "trust the process" 😂 Me: IN WHAT WORLD IS THAT A BOA...OHHH 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for sticking with it 😊
Отлично!
Thanks !!
I am absolutely mesmerized by your videos...thank you I u for your talent and instruction. I hope one day I'll be as confident and accomplished. Lovely work!!!
@@terrianderson6815 Thank you ☺️
❤
Thank you
You and Thomas Schaller…..it really is all about the drawing…sigh….. taking the time to think about what to draw….and…what one does with the drawing afterwards…is of course…what gives us variety….thank you…
Thank you so much. 😊
What would do with a sunny day? A yellow wash to set the mood?
You can use whichever colours you want, or need for the subject
@@ChrisStephenArt Thank you.
... Wet on wet...
Beautiful!
Thanks Carol
