    • That pull star technique at 24:30 actually works greas. I started a few cars this way when i didn't have battery power. Firs turn on the ignition, Then put the gear in the second or third (depending on the car). Dont bother trying on the first gear. Twist some rope around the weel, and pull 😉.

    • A large VW dealership near me had an accident happen a few decades ago. They had lifted a car with a small forklift like that one (for cars you really should use far larger and wider ones) and with it tipping over, it hit one of the bridges that had another car on it, which in turn made the bridge anchor bolts sheer and the bridge tip over, into the bridge next to it. This chained into all 10 bridges in their shop, almost all of them having a car on them, being pushed over and the cars on them being wrecked. Doing something like this, you're not just endangering the idiots standing under the car, the car and the forklift, it has the potential to destroy your whole shop, having a bunch of multi ton pieces of metal flying about. It's many degrees beyond just dangerous.

  • My old boss at the shop I used to work at told me a joke about mechanics and engineers that seems to hold true. It went, "Waay back, a mechanic slept with an engineer's wife, and there has been enmity between the groups ever since."

    @armandowillem@armandowillem3 ай бұрын
    • It's the same issue everywhere. Corporations don't let engineers and mechanics or drivers talk, causing insane issues. My neighbor drives for the national public transport service. Every time some desk jockey designs new routes, the first driver that sees it sees 1001 issues with the new route, their feedback is ignored, the route is put in action and within a month it gets changed repeatedly because it simply doesn't work the way the engineers envisioned it. A year later, same issue all over. There was a period between 2005-2010 where the engineers had to go on bustrips with drivers to test out new routes and write down the issues, which caused new routes being implemented having to undergo fairly few changes. But then some politician came up and said they'd streamline the process and fucked it all up again.

  • To help you guys out-- I was a painter for a few years, and the whole "buckets stuck together" thing happens a lot in that field, too, as one might imagine. Put simply, all you have to do is break the seal between the two buckets; they're flexible enough where you could easily fit a wrench or other narrow tool between (we usually used a 5-in-1). With the vacuum broken, the buckets slide right apart.

    @jackc5841@jackc58413 ай бұрын
    • Happens a lot with pool guys also, I was a painter for a while and remodeling guy, lots of buckets. Use a blower, a vacuum in reverse, or a compressor with a air nozzle, and blow air between the buckets. Don't have your head over it just in case. I've done something like this with swimming pool filters that are steel or stainless steel tanks with a big rubber o ring. Remove the clamp, drain out a little water, maybe 1/3, and then turn on the pump. You gotta be very careful, and have a good ear and eye for it, and put a hand or something draped over the lid to keep it from flying into anything above the tank, or go into low orbit. Definitely don't have your head over this. Don't even think about doing this... The information is for illustration purposes only. I used to train people at that job, and very rarely ever found someone I could teach that.

A stock X15 probably pushes 40psi with a factory tune. My detuned DD15 made 35ish. I'd say it's making well over 4000ftlb of torque at the crank considering a stock will make 2000.

Minimum fire extinguisher you would want on hand in a shop is a 2A10BC. This means it is good to cover 2000sq/ft of a class A fire and 10 sq/ft of a class B or C fire. Never, evey use water to attempt to extinguish a flammable liquid fire - it will spread the fire as many flammable liquids have a lower specific gravity than water or are not soluable in water and/or cause an explosion from expansion of the water due to near instantaneous evaporation at high enough temperatures.

  • The first clip sorta happened to me. I had my ecm reprogrammed by a "professional" and they changed my rev limiter from 7,000 to 9,500, which I didn't want nor did they inform me they changed it. A week later during a hard acceleration my tires broke loose in 2nd gear on a damp interstate on-ramp. Instantly my RPMs jumped from 5,000 to pinned(my tach only goes to about 7,500), then boom bang clunk clunk clunk clunk followed by the sound of muffled crying. The shop tried saying they didn't change rev limiter but the idiots forgot I told them there's a 2 cameras in the car, it recorded them talking to each other. Not only did they talk about changing it but it also recorded them revving it in neutral way past 7,500. Also recorded them smoking weed and cigarettes in my car while taking it for a joyride around town for over an hour and run errands, pickup food and eating it in my car. At every light or stop sign they floored it spinning the tires. Which also explains why I had like no traction on the damp roads the day it blew up. Long story short I got my attorney ex-girlfriend to send them a letter basically stating they are getting sued for $70,000 to buy a new car. They got an attorney to fight but when their attorney seen the video of them abusing my car and basically acting like douchebags and they were told I was going to upload the video to KZhead, Twitter and give it to the local news and police since they recorded themselves breaking about 20 different traffic laws. They immediately settled for $40,000 + my attorney's fees, which she was doing it for free but I told if they're paying then charge me double what you normally charge, because f*ck them. They have zero respect for other people or others property. And NO, I can't show the video or name the shop, that was part of the settlement. Doesn't matter though so many people found out just from word of mouth they ended closing down less than a year later. So I highly recommend all of you put a camera in your car that records inside your car even when the car is off that activates when it detects people or movement. That $300 camera saved me thousands of dollars.

Also, it's one thing to have all that stuff memorized in your head but it's a completely different thing to see a problem and to figure out what could cause that problem! You can compare it with Dr House: you have a bunch of "symptoms" and you have to use your knowledge but especially your experience, too, to figure out what could cause the problem. I find it fascinating to watch them analyse an issue, figure out what could cause that issue and then eliminate the wrong diagnosis, one by one until they know what it is...and then, finally, start fixing the problem, hoping their diagnosis is the right one!

I remember turning over my 1960 Beetle engine (power turned off) and it spun easily, much easier than when I hand started my 1959 Hillman. A friend of mine had a '62 VW and said he started his car several times with the pull rope (when he couldn't push-start it). I certainly wouldn't want to try that these days.

  • That pull-starting reminds me of an actual vintage accessory sold for aircooled VW Beetles back in the day--a pull start pulley that mounted to the generator pulley, and came with a wooden handled rope to spool on and pull just like a classic lawnmower. Of course, those little flat fours were easy enough to start like that, but you couldn't do that with a modern high-compression engine--if it is possible and not internet foolery, using a raised drive wheel to do that instead while remaining stationary would be pretty clever.

  • The axle boot hack. In the navy, we had a leak, in the prop shaft, outside the hull. The engineers actually, came to the kitchen, to get, a can of evaporated milk, to send down the shaft, to find the leak, then, the divers, wrapped the shaft, with saran wrap, and capped it with pipe clamp, to get us into port, for repairs lol

  • That pull star technique at 24:30 actually works greas. I started a few cars this way when i didn't have battery power. Firs turn on the ignition, Then put the gear in the second or third (depending on the car). Dont bother trying on the first gear. Twist some rope around the weel, and pull 😉.

  • LOL the tape on the Axle Boot thing is actually a hack (when you still have a boot attached). I just did that yesterday on my 2013 VW Jetta 2.5L which has had a torn boot for about 6 months, and was starting to fling black grease all over the wheel well and suspension components. OBVIOUSLY i have a replacement axle sitting in my apartment, but of course, it’s VW, so i couldn’t get the axle detached from the transmission for the life of me. I tried with a pry bar for 9 hours cumulatively over the course of 2 days, and couldn’t get it out to put the new axle on. So i sprayed a rag with brake cleaner and wiped down the area, then put some gorilla tape around the tear. Hopefully it doesn’t come unstuck and wrap around my wheel while driving.

  • Chevy 350 in my 73 one ton spun a bearing and blew the end cap off #7 rod. The cap came out thru the oil pan, the rod came out thru the side of the block, the crank hit the rod, and it seized up and left twenty foot black stripes on the road. I pushed the clutch in and drifted onto the shoulder. I was only going about 100 miles an hour in fourth gear. I was able to salvage the heads, camshaft, oil pump, distributor, carb, intake, headers, alternator, etc. The block, crank, and pan were toast. Good thing I had another smallblock that I was in the process of rebuilding hanging on an engine stand in my garage. That was like 1985, maybe 86.

Putting the car at a 45 or less degree angle say going down a dirt road, if you hit a pothole loses traction for longer than the count of two. Notice the brake pedal does the exact same thing in the video until all four tires tires get traction back. The company says to fix the problem simply turn off ABS.
