  • thankyou for this video, I am so blessed, my Samoyed goes to the park and plays with all the dogs in the morning and also after work. He sleeps during the day after long walks, does not bark except rarely, sleeps all night, does not chew anything around the house, but I use alot of distraction, I walk him alot, I give him healthy treats, and ice cubes to crunch, and lots of toys. Olaf is adorable

  • I rarely comment on YT videos, but felt compelled to share that this is probably the most accurate video I have seen about Sammy’s, and anyone considering one should take this advice seriously. My girl Poli’ahu has way more energy than I had anticipated or was warned about. My solution is frequent short bursts of play throughout the day.

  • Our 5 month old Sammy girl actually doesn’t bark much! She was the quietest pup in our class which was a surprise. She “talks” with other sounds like grumbles, whines, and awoos sometimes so I think it depends on your line of Sammy if they bark a lot or not. They are as a breed more vocal for sure.

    • Only 9 dogs came out of Siberia before the Iron Curtain went up which stayed up until 1991. The actual Samoyeds of the Samoyedic people are red, white, and black - like Chows. If you see the Samoyeds from the Samoyedic people, they have less fur, they are more stringy, and more hardy. What we have in the West are mutants. Don't get me wrong, I love these dogs, but these dogs are all practically clones of one another in the west. When you bathe your dog, be certain to get all the soap out. IF your dog develops a hot spot, it's 99.9% chance you left some soap in the coat. I used to rinse my dog off, drain the tub, refill the tub, and rinse again, even when there was apparently no soap. My dogs never got a hot spot again once I started doing this. You can tell if you left soap in on a hot spot by putting some water on the hot spot and rubbing gently. If it suds up, that's soap. It's easy to miss. This was fundamental advice I gave to anybody that adopted my dogs, I used to foster for these dogs. They're great, and I'm happy to see they are no longer "in fashion". I'm no longer needed for this breed.

  • Olaf at 06:34 😂😂😂 he is so cute! Our girl keeps getting knots on behind her ears too. I think the gentle leader keeps causing them. What type of chew toy is that on the floor? This is a great video btw!!!! We are seriously considering of getting a boy Samoyed too.

    @jaycilangehennig2059@jaycilangehennig2059 Жыл бұрын
    • Yes, Olaf is such a curious pup. Always has to sniff everything lol. The chew toy on the floor is a bully stick mounted in a bully stick holder. It helps to prevent choking as the stick gets smaller and it helps dogs hold it easier.

  • I just came across your youtube video on Olaf. Much of what you say is correct however I have only owned females, I am on my 4th one now spanning 40 years. You can spin hats and other clothing from them as I can attest. They can attract a crowd almost anywhere they come to be. My latest sammy, Yuki, doesn't bark as my last sammy Thule. So I guess it is an individual characteristic.

    @user-lm1sg1we5z@user-lm1sg1we5z8 ай бұрын
    • Yes, definitely an individual characteristic thing. We've met other Sammy's around the same age as Olaf who don't bark at all or are a bit more calm in certain situations. We certainly have our work cut out for us with Olaf, but we still love him for all he is.

We hope your little pup continues to be calm and you have a wonderful experience with your new friend.

    • Thanks for the comment! The only time Olaf ever barks these days is when he's protesting against something. For whatever reason, Olaf hates having his picture taken, so he'll let everyone know lol. For the most part, Olaf sort of grew out of his barking phase, but it's in his nature to make a lot of noise since Sammy's - and Huskies - are just very talkative dogs. The best thing you can do is to never reward your dog for barking. Reward your pup when it is quiet. Even if your dog is not doing anything but sitting on the floor relaxing, just give the dog plenty of calm praise. Calmly tell the dog, "Good quiet." That'll let your dog know that whatever it's doing must be good, so it'll learn to do more of that. If your dog does make a lot of noise, don't ever yell "quiet." A lot of owners do this and yelling gives the dog mixed signals. Quiet should be quiet, not loud. Hope this helps!

  • Hi Irene, great video as always! Just got a Samoyed puppy he is 2 months now. Does Olaf sleeps the whole night alone? Our puppy can't stay one minute alone yet. How was this process for you?

    @gabrielsotello5078@gabrielsotello5078 Жыл бұрын
    • Hi Gabriel! Yes, he sleeps the entire night now and wakes up at around 6:30am, which is when I wake up anyway. A 2-month-old puppy will certainly keep you up all night with its barking and they have to use the bathroom every few hours. It was very exhausting and frustrating, especially for my husband who values a good night's rest. I imagine it's like taking care of a newborn baby. We got Olaf when he was 3 months old and he finally slept through the night at around 5 to 6 months once we started placing ice packs in his crate. We didn't realize that Olaf might have just been uncomfortable with all that fur and no way to cool down. It's going to be difficult for the first 5 months or so, but definitely try the ice packs, maybe turn on the AC, and find ways to make your pup feel comfortable. I promise that it gets better, but the hard work never stops.

  • You have a beautiful Samoyed! Ours is 9 weeks old, a boy. Do you usually neuter your Samoyed? What changes occur afterwards?

    @francesmeng3711@francesmeng3711 Жыл бұрын
    • Hi Frances! We do plan on neutering Olaf between a year and a half to two years. That's typically the timeline for Samoyeds to be neutered but it varies from breeder to breeder, so you may want to check with them before doing anything. Some breeders do not allow owners to neuter their Sammy's, so it's a good idea to double check if you are unsure. As for the changes, neutering a Samoyed will certainly cause some biological changes such as testosterone levels. One reason why breeders will say to wait a year and a half or two is because the Samoyed isn't fully developed and snipping too early can stop bone and muscle development, as well as fluffiness of your dog. If you see dog shows, you'll notice how big Samoyeds look. That's because they are still intact. Snipping also means that your dog may have less energy than before, which can be a positive for some owners if their dog is overly energetic. It also helps your dog get along with other dogs. Right now, we can't take Olaf to a dog park because all the other dogs know he is not neutered so they become very aggressive and dominating. It's just not safe to take him there until he's fixed. Overall, neutering a dog is your choice. Definitely take the time to get as much info as you can before doing so. I hope this helps!

  • I raised a Husky puppy from 2 months old, and he ended up being a calm, obedient, and confident dog after all of our training and adventures together. Would you say a samoyed is easier to train than a husky or the other way around? I am planning to get a female sammy as a companion for my husky boy

    @masstarvation@masstarvation Жыл бұрын
    • Hi! I can't really give a proper answer because we've never had a Husky, so we are unable to compare the two. It might be a good idea to ask someone who owns a Husky. As for Samoyeds, yes, they are quite difficult to train. Though they are highly intelligent, they are also incredibly stubborn. They're also loaded with a lot of energy, they are known to be quite talkative, they need to constantly be groomed, and they need plenty of attention. Samoyeds, however, are super friendly and playful. They make great pets if you have kids.

    @clairebelin3442@clairebelin3442 Жыл бұрын
    • Hi Claire! It's definitely possible to raise a Samoyed by yourself, but I wouldn't really recommend it if you don't have the time. Caring for a Samoyed is almost like a full-time job, so be sure you are able to dedicate a lot of your time to the dog, especially as a puppy. Having someone helping you will certainly make a big difference.

  • Hello, thanks for the video, I'm planning to get a Samoyed soon, and I need an advice please : 1- So I'm basically a Doctor, I work everyday 6 hours a day, I can leave the puppy with a family member but somedays it will have to stay alone for those 6 hours. 2- I have a house where l spend 9 months, without a garden but close to a Park And the summer house with a garden and at the beach, for more fun maybe. 3- My compagnon is allergic to some air particles, don't know about dogs but heaed that Samoyeds are hypoallergenic, will it work ? 4- It's my first animal to be adopted, so basically I don't have any experience, will it be hard to train the Samoyed? And so, is it a good idea to get a Samoyed? Thanks for answering

    @amir.hlaoui@amir.hlaoui6 ай бұрын
    • Hi Amir! To quickly answer your questions as honestly as possible, yes Samoyeds are hypoallergenic and they are extremely hard to train, so you definitely need to have the time to train your dog. If you know you're not going to be around that often to spend time with your Samoyed or train your pup, it may be a good idea to consider another breed or another type of pet that can be left alone for a long time (cat). You can't just get a Samoyed and hand it off to family to watch because they won't know how to train it either. You also just can't leave it at home for more than a few hours because Samoyeds are very social dogs and need attention. It'll have severe separation anxiety. Having a park nearby is great and dogs love beaches, so all of that is fine. The main concern is whether or not you have the time. Hope this helps.

      @theoandolaf@theoandolaf6 ай бұрын
    • Yes. Samoyeds are great companions. We’re on our 3rd over many, many years. Samoyed are pack dogs, love people, especially children. And they bond to you as they love their owners. But they get board easily, and are chewers. Shoes, furniture, pillows, etc. so keep valuables off the floor and use kongs or nylabone style toys; not plush toys because they can’t tell the difference. Get a pet sitter or someone to check in on the puppy on your long days.
