Bach - Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ BWV 639 // Krzezsów Engler
Johann Sebastian Bach's setting of Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ is one of his best-loved chorales in his remarkable Orgelbüchlein collection. The text of the chorale is a cry for grace and simplicity of his setting belies the complexity beneath. Set in F minor, the chorale melody is presented against a semiquaver inner line and a quaver bass. The running line in the left hand sighs, adding a poignancy to the melody above. This is the only trio setting in the entire Orgelbüchlein which has prompted some scholars to surmise that it was originally intended to be performed by a string trio as part of a, now lost, cantata movement.
Engler's organ of Krzezsów Basilica (sampled for Hauptwerk by Sonus Paradisi) is an exquisite instrument situated a glorious baroque church with an exceptionally clear acoustic, perfectly suited to Bach's chorale preludes.
