With some knowledge and preparation, you can travel state-to-state or even cross-country with your firearms to hunt, compete, or just see the sights.
I live full-time on the road shooting 3-Gun and USPSA competitions all over America. As a concealed carry license holder, I also concealed carry in all states I'm legally allowed. People often ask how I travel with firearms, so here's the scoop.
Remember, It's up to you to understand your state and federal laws!
I drive truck otr. I keep my sp101 with me. Its usually loaded in the sleeper under a pillow. I have never felt the need to tell a cop that I have it. None of their bussiness.
I don't agree with registering my firearms. They'll be the first people that the government comes after.
I'm a trucker and and let's just say you and me are on the same page.
It's a shame that you have to jump through hoops and consider and plan just to exercise a guaranteed Constitutional right. This is a prime example of why we need national reciprocity.
why we need #2A advocates to push law in a 2nd Trump term!
can't have national reciprocity if states' rights matter on regulating firearms You don't want NY or CA laws being applied to Texas (that's one form of reciprocity, obviously not what most people mean). We have two real options to further reciprocity (of the kind we want anyway): 1) The federal government steps in and says that states may regulate certain aspects, but at the same time all states need to respect certain baseline standards. This is somewhat de facto in that right now laws like the NFA and organizations like the ATF regulate certain aspects of firearms ownership, while most legislation is controlled by states. The issue with this approach is that even in 'preserving' states' rights you are empowering a federal institution to govern firearms. The most logical organization to oversee this is the ATF, which of course no gun owner really trusts 2) Force the courts to consider the issue of gun rights through the prism of the of the 14th Amendment. Supreme Court cases like DC v Heller and McDonald v City of Chicago took this approach to strike down local gun control legislation. Future cases are most likely going to make their way through the court system, and where gun rights are preserved/gun control struck down, the 14th Amendment is almost certainly going to be involved. **** Let's circle back to something though: citizens in Texas do not want to be governed according to the whims of NY politicians when it comes to guns or anything else for that matter. As a gun owner in NY, I very much would like NY gun laws to be more like those of Texas, but the majority of citizens in the state (most of whom live in/near NYC) very much disagree with that. There is an easy solution to my issue: I move to Texas, or any other state that I feel has policies in line with my principles/interests. This is the beauty of federalism and the way our nation was intended to be governed. Frankly, a lot of us think about gun rights the wrong way: we *shouldn't* ask that other states be governed exactly like our own state, since we know we'd hate for those other states to govern us. Instead, we need to insist again on different states having wide latitude in determining their own policies. States' rights shouldn't be thought of as a relic. Instead, they should be embraced whenever possible as a necessary compromise where local priorities can be codified as law, instead of our present political environment which places far too great an emphasis on controlling national institutions.
The 2nd amendment as written needs no reciprocity. States have over reached. Can you name any other Constitutional right that changes at state lines? SCOTUS needs to rule on this once and for all.
@@quintaeco Trump had the chance to pass national reciprocity into law when Republicans had a slim majority, but he shut sponsor Steve Scalise down. Despite his claims,Trump is no 2a hero, and did us no favors during his term.
Every state infact should be the same throughout the country on the federal constitutional base !!
I'm so glad someone made this video. I am a new VanLifer and also a proud American Patriot. This is awesome. I was getting worried about whether or not I could legally have firearms with me or not. I am strictly Constitutional Carry.
100% with you haha I’m about to go full time and honestly the risk is worth the reward given we are ever in trouble. Constitutional carry ftw stay safe!!!
Thanks for this video, it nice to know that someone is doing what I want to. My wife and I are looking at going full time in our RV and we wanted to start Competing in 3 gun competitions.
Gauntlet.... That's an understatement. I'm in NH. Cool with some things, not others, while surrounding states, are the exact opposite A friend of a friend, who worked for Sig Sauer, here, in NH, designed part of the Sig 556. Whilst travelling through NY, to a demo, he was pulled over, charged for possession of the 3 rifles in his car, and convicted. Brilliant gunsmith. Brilliant ex-gunsmith.
Disgusting of course leave it to NY ugh
I been searching for this answer for so long. Thank you. Sounds like alot of common sense. 👌🏽
This video was ENORMOUSLY helpful for me, thank you! I'm one of that tiny niche of people who live and travel in vehicles, and I just needed simple, straightforward beginner information of the ins and outs of having my gun with me as I live in my vehicle.
Glad you enjoyed it and it was helpful. Thanks for the comment Mel.
Wrong, if you are stopped it is because you are *SUSPECTED* of something, even if it is as simple as driving a car vaguely matching the description of a car they are looking for. You are innocent until proven guilty, even if they do not treat you that way. Don't answer questions and never consent to a search. Ever. You have nothing to gain by doing so, and the most illegal and harassing searches become legal the second you consent to them. NY and NJ don't respect FOPA. Make your lawyers life easier if they do decide to trample on your rights, once you consent it can't be thrown out. Exercise your rights people.
you can really just refuse to answer questions and refuse to consent to a search?? That sounds like it's just going to make the (probably well-meaning) cops MORE suspicious...
@@milo_thatch_incarnate Yes. The whole point of asking questions is to fish for information. The whole point of asking consent for a search is because they don't have probable cause, therefore they have to get permission. Don't consent, and don't answer dumb questions. A fish can't get hooked if it never opens its mouth. And nothing brings more joy to a lawyer's heart than "I haven't said a word". But don't trust some random nobody on the internet. Here is a law professor on keeping your mouth shut even when you are 100% innocent kzhead.info/sun/l5Fwn52wkKJtmH0/bejne.html And here is a criminal defense attorney on consenting to searches kzhead.info/sun/q62TqpSufWSBg6c/bejne.html
A lot of people do videos on types of different guns to carry I love this video because nobody ever really thinks about the legal side of it just because your state is gun friendly doesn’t mean the neighbor states are awesome video
Thank you for this useful information. I'm from Massachusetts and I have a LTC, I'm going to be traveling once I pick up my RV next month and will be carrying through different state. I will get that app you spoken about. Enjoy your travels.
As somebody who plans on moving from New Hampshire to Arizona, this video was absolutely perfect for me. Thank you!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE INFO, I AM PLANNING TO MOVE FROM CT TO NC, ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION, I AM STILL WORRIED ABOUT GOING THROUGH NEW YORK BUT I AM FOLLOWING ALL THE GUIDELINES AND PRECAUTIONS TO TRAVEL.
Thank you very much. Have a blessed week. Rise Patriot and Never Ever Give Up - Chubbeth's Thunder.
Full time RV'er here as well - Thanks for the vid!
Outstanding. Thank you
Step 1-Put guns in car Step 2-Drive

I never knew about the USCCA. I'm moving soon and it'll certainly help, thank you!
Glad it was helpful Talix.
Just made the move from Commiefornia. Freedom!!!! Remember the movie, Escape from L.A.? It was like that, but the criminals were the government.

Very helpful video. Thank you!
This was very informative thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I appreciate this information. Thank you!
You are welcome TheR.
Just moved to North Carolina from California. I couldn't store/ship my ammunition let alone my firearms. So I put the back seat down, placed the firearms in cases locked and unloaded on the floor of the trunk and back seat. Then I placed the ammo and accessories on top of that, hard cased and locked. These were a little off to the side. Then I placed the duffle bags on top of all that, a really tight fit. I had a California CCW and hit the road with two weeks left on my 30 day apartment notice, so technically I still could carry had I chose to. This of course in states with reciprocity, which are not that many with CA. California does not recognize CCWs from other states, and for that reason, not many if any states have reciprocity with California. I opted not to carry period on my move. I made a pit stop in Memphis and picked up my AR and continued on my journey. Love is an AR you haven't seen in about 5-6 years. Oh joy! Rapture!-The Scarecrow Had I been pulled over and been hassled about the firearms, I would have challenged the officer to access any of the firearms from the driver's seat buckled in with keys in hand. In two minutes. Not possible. Anyway, no longer in Commiefornia. It's probably not strictly legal, but it is the spirit of the law. None of my 10 firearms were accessible from the driver's seat. So I was comfortable with it.
I live in Indiana and have a carry permit and travel all across the US for my company thanks for the video and the info.
You're welcome Mike. Glad you enjoyed it.
I'm a full time RVer. Thank you for the info. I'm gonna have to update lockable ammo cans. Being retired military, ammo cans are the only option for ammo storage. Also gonna have to update the type of carrying cases. When traveling I kept both in my trailer and in 2 different areas of the trailer. Plus "Not" easy to get to either area... Also I try to stay in states that have reciprocity w/my states conceal carry permit. Thank you for the vid post... Really great info!!! I will print a copy of FOPA and keep it in my p/u's console... Keep your powder dry..
Glad you enjoyed it. Stay safe out there!
Awesome to hear from another full-timer! I also stay in states with reciprocity, it's your best bet. Finding the best places inside a camper can be tricky, all I can say is get creative and perhaps earn some space where you might not think, like panels with storage behind them etc.
@@NH3GunGirl I want to incorporate a safe/locker/lock box in a closet. Hide in plain sight type thing. Also locks that prevent a casual theft.
On point with vehicle/ mobile home being a domisial in my state it's ok to tool around with firearms
Full time RVer here, just into Cowboy shooting. The non resident Arizona CCW is good in over 27 states.
Great video, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
The moral of the story is, traveling with a gun is essentially dying from the inability to defend oneself for five minutes as you’re being shot at by criminals that don’t respect laws? Thanks government! So glad you’re there to protect us from ourselves
great insight thank you
You're welcome Ken.
Great girl! Great Video! Thank you so much. The only question I have is where can I download FOPA ? Thank you for the hard work and the great outcome from putting the time and effort into the video, but yeah where can I download Fopa Ms.Taylor? (Oh & thank u for the App! 4:03 You are naive if you think you have to do something wrong to get pulled over and searched.
Hey im not a plane person i would either travel by road or water with that being said what are the laws regarding taking a firearm be it a pistol or rifle on a cruise/ferry or any other type of boat travel
Do you NOT carry in States like MD or NY when you stop for the night? I suppose not. How much property AROUND your camper is considered your domicile for purposes of carrying a gun? Tough question I'm sure. Do they expect you to venture into the woods to hunt for firewood or to take a hike WITHOUT your firearm for protection? Probably so. We need RECIPROCITY across all States.
I'm from MD and I agree with you , about to go cross country camping trip and want to bring my AR-15 what is your opinion on that
@@boogiekush9391 as they say, often, better to be judged by 12 than carried by six. Lot's changed/changing since last year with 2A finally getting the attention it deserves.
what size of pelican case did you show there with the shotgun + AR15 + pistol?
Lock your camper and the extra compartments, they’ll need a search warrent

Taylor u are bad asss love it 😍 thanks
Lov’n it!🤠
Understand that some states narrowly construe what it means to travel. Did you stop for the night? Guess what, you stopped "travelling". Would stopping to eat mean you have stopped "travelling"? I guess that depends on which cop stops you. For multi-day, cross-country trips, this means you start "travelling" in the state you are in in the morning and stop travelling in the state where you get a hotel at night. For FOPA to be effective, everything you have must be legal in the state you start travelling in and the state you stop travelling in. Also know that interstate travel with NFA firearms, with a few exceptions, must be approved by the ATF.
I dont have a ccl but would like to visit family in other surrounding states and go to the range with them while visiting, os this legal of gun is stored and locked up correctly ?
I’m resident in ID and I going to travel for work in Oregon and I keep my 12 Gauge mossberg in my car do I need to put in lock case and my ammo too to be legal
43' Tiffin DP tag with Jeep toad. Enjoy extreme long range and high angle shooting. Shoot many large calibers......300/338NM; 408 Cheytacs, 416 Barrett; 50BMG in upscale bolt/semi chassis rigs...scary black guns, nasty handguns. While out west enjoying those activities in WY/MT/ID/SD/AZ...., pondering how to deal with firearms and tons of ammo. CA, OR, WA have beautiful scenery we'd like to enjoy. But, crossing those state lines makes us felons-in-waiting with our arsenal. Anyone figured out how to deal with that scenario?? Leave coach at RV Resort with guns (maybe $200+K value) locked inside, using Jeep to cross into CA. Rent storage locker (U-haul,...) to leave arsenal. LEO suggested exploring leaving at gun store/range before entering CA. All have high risk and/or require exiting anti-gun land at same entry point to recover arsenal/coach. Anyone traveling to shoot competitively/for training that has successfully dealt with this issue??? Real sticky issues.
Are rifles treated the same as hand guns when traveling cross country? Thank you in advance.
Canadian here wanting to take our tiny house to the US in the winter, any tips on how to do this with our firearms?

Hi everyone. I have a specific question about transporting a firearm by plane. I have a Pennsylvania conceal license. When I fly to Florida, I can legally check in my firearm at the airport in Philadelphia. But sometimes I have to fly from Baltimore. Maryland has very strict gun law. I am not sure how they would react on me transporting firearm to and from the airport. My understanding is that I should be protected by FOPA since I am going from point A to point B where I can legally be with a firearm, and Baltimore airport is just a transit point. Have anyone had a similar experience? Please share.
What if im in a day cab semi? Im cross country driving in one and I want to carry my ar with me just in case someone tries something
Do I need a LTC? I bought a weapon in texas, where I dont need one but I'm moving. Not exactly sure what to do
Isn't that semiautomatic rifle and high capacity P320 magazine illegal in California? Does FOPA let you travel there?
I going on a hunt from Ca to Idaho. My guns will be locked up in a hard case in back of my truck with a locked camper shell. Then ammo and clips/ mags will be a ammo can (not lockable) behind my seat in a single cab truck. Does the ammo can have to be locked. I don’t mind telling the cops I have guns if they ask. Anything to make them Feel safe. Do you think this will be ok. I know it’s not legal advice. But more so your opinion.
When you are pulled over and you have locked gun cases in your car do you have to tell them what’s in there and do they have a right to open them? I

How can I get a printable copy for fopa thanks .
or do what I do and call the highway patrol in each State that im going through to find the latest laws.
I have a motorhome. Am I allowed to travel with firearms in the coach itself? I was thinking of building a gun wall.
Good info and video.
I've always heard that New Jersey the absolute worst at the state level. California isn't much better now, since any ammo brought into the state has to be taken to a gun dealer and have the appropriate background check completed--$19.00 for any amount, if you don't have a gun registered with the state.
Nj bb guns need a firearms id. Airsoft guns don't but you can be charged with brandishing even if it's bringing it to the field without a case.
Is that an acoustic version of Seether's "Country Song" at 0:20?!

What about if you own land in Alaska? Can one drive through Canada with your guns in your car?
I believe you are allowed a reasonable period of stay in Canada to reach Alaska using the most direct route. Best to contact Canada customs about that.
I've driven to Canada with firearms before, there is documentation and a fee that has to be paid before entry. However, this was years ago, with their new laws I'd lean to thinking you might not be able to. Best to check with customs.
Lots of people go to Canada for big game hunting. It probably depends on the gun.

Question for you how do you travel for competition with standard magazines that are over 10 rounds because I know a lot of the states in New England don’t allow you to have them are you allowed to You drive through states like Massachusetts and New York with 30 round magazines for your AR or for your competition a pistol or do you have to limit to 10 rounds because that’s the restriction their state
I’m also curious about this too, I plan on traveling to New England later this week and wanted to know, I would assume that it would be okay as long as you limit your weapons to what the law desires them to be but idk.
Haha I’m a part of that niche full time traveler with guns haha
And always the unwritten rule; a cop can do whatever they like and they get a two week vacation if they're wrong.

FOPA will not help you if you have magazines that hold more than ten rounds if you are driving through new york or massachusetts, etc. So you won't be arrested for the gun, but the magazines. FOPA is very weak.
