I'm happy with al after the fight, my father who is a great trainer spoke with him after the fight and al said he was upset he didn't win but he didn't really go for the ko because of khabib's take downs.. He also wasn't really rocked or wobbled during the fight to he said, Also He said that khabib is so strong and once he got a hold of his leg he just couldn't move, but thank you al for saving the card and not quiting even though you were bloodied and were losing you had no quit and went the distance with a killer. - Respect Al

Here’s how I see it, if Khabib was toying around with Al, then he’s a reckless idiot and will get ktfko in time. Since that’s not the case, and since he clearly stated that he respected Al and consideried him a dangerous opponent, I would have to assum that Khabib was faced with a real challenge in there and had to change his game plan as a result. Wait, so you're comparing very different styles. Conor trained for RDA(similar to Alvarez or Aldo basic striker same size good offensive wrestling) and got Nate( lanky, rangy, excellent boxing and great ground game) very different opponents so the switch up favours Nate especially since his cardio is always super good and Conor was putting on weight. Ferguson who doesn't have a shoot wrestling style similar to Diaz it's more of an off your back style BJJ was expecting Chiesa( solid striking but mainly a submission artist) but instead got Vannata (a striking wizard) so those comparisons are awful. Khabib is not a complete martial artist the same way mighty mouse or Jon Jones are, he's extremely dominant in wrestling and clinching but only okay-good at striking. He switched from a guy who has extreme cardio, okay standup, but is good off his back. It's unlikely Khabib would've trained to only standup against Tony though because he's weak there so it's likely Khabib would've trained his conditioning and wrestled Tony. Al who is a good wrestler and powerful striker was training for a muay thai specialist and a 3 round fight but instead got what most consider the most dominant grappler in the sport in a 5 rounder. Please enlighten me on how you see this as being similar to the other aforementioned fights.
