Fly Fishing KATMAI NATIONAL PARK by Todd Moen - ALASKA FLY FISHING

The latest from Catch Magazine features quintessential Alaskan dry fly fishing for rainbow trout on the famed Alaskan Brooks River and others within Katmai National Park.
Renown for its large brown bears, spawning sockeye and wild remote landscape, the Brooks River is a celebrity of Alaska. The opportunity to film here alongside feasting brown bears is one of Todd Moen’s dreams come true.
For this 21-minute production, Todd traveled with Royal Wolf Lodge manager Nate Morris as they explored the Brooks and American rivers in SW Alaska. In and out by floatplane from lakes to rivers, they dry fly fished the remote upper reaches of many untouched streams finding incredible insect hatches along the way only navigable by air.
A little different from most of his videos, this film includes some unique live narration, with Todd adding behind the scenes updates and in-action comments. He shares a bit of his own experience as he filmed this incredible Alaskan fishery.
Thanks to Nate Morris and the whole staff at Royal Wolf Lodge for making this possible. The excellent float plane navigation by Forrest Carpenter, Blake McIntosh and Danny Zito gave Todd, Nate and McKinley the opportunity to get in an create this video for Catch Magazine. Much gratitude for the generous support from R.L. Winston Fly Rods, Scientific Anglers and Skwala Fishing. For more information about the Brooks River, please check out Katmai National Park.

  • Another great video, Todd! It was cool to see you help narrate this one. One of the things that I really like about your videos is that there is no audible swearing. I mentor a middle school fishing club and it's nice to be able to show a quality fishing video without having to mute the sound.

  • I've been to both the Royal Wolf & Big Ku for many years...not only is the fishing great, but the entire operation, staff & guides are the best. When I first came, I mostly focused on chucking streamers every day till my arm fell off...but the dry fly fishing can be fantastic...even throwing dry droppers with nymphs. Looking forward again to my trip to RW this early July.

  • Todd, I comment on every video how great it is, so not to sound like a broken record, but this was another great one, done a little bit differently. This looked like an amazing trip. I also love your enthusiasm for dry fly fishing. Today, a lot of guys are really into nymphing and fishing streamers, but I'd much rather fish a dry than anything, to the point that I sometimes fish one when it might not catch as many fish. To catch fish this size on dries must be incredible. Thanks for another great video, and great to see you finally.

    @jamesgilford157@jamesgilford1572 ай бұрын
    • Hi James! I always appreciate your comments so thanks. Yes, just something about fishing the dry, for me as a camera operator it really just comes down to how visual it is. But I’m with ya as a fisherman, I’d rather throw dries and not catch as many any day.

  • Watched the online live video feeds from Brooks Falls all last summer. July 19th. was the day most fish jumping activity was seen. Also saw a few guys down in the river well below the falls. They were fly fishing and catching some fish. Didn't seem to be any conflict between bears and human fishers, but some close encounters! Only occasionally did one of the cameras zoom in on a fly guy. Mostly the camera operator panned away from the fly fishers as not to intrude on their privacy. Looked like a ton of fun. Cheers!

  • Just curious if the rainbows are that selective? So if there's a green drake hatch, would they take a caddis or even a mouse pattern? Beautiful film!

    @mikecoughlin5419@mikecoughlin54192 ай бұрын
    • We tried a mouse and fished it hard with no hook ups. Had a few giant refusals. I think these trout would eat a caddis or even a stimulator… any attractor when they are really feeding hard.
