Fly Fishing KATMAI NATIONAL PARK by Todd Moen - ALASKA FLY FISHING
The latest from Catch Magazine features quintessential Alaskan dry fly fishing for rainbow trout on the famed Alaskan Brooks River and others within Katmai National Park.
Renown for its large brown bears, spawning sockeye and wild remote landscape, the Brooks River is a celebrity of Alaska. The opportunity to film here alongside feasting brown bears is one of Todd Moen’s dreams come true.
For this 21-minute production, Todd traveled with Royal Wolf Lodge manager Nate Morris as they explored the Brooks and American rivers in SW Alaska. In and out by floatplane from lakes to rivers, they dry fly fished the remote upper reaches of many untouched streams finding incredible insect hatches along the way only navigable by air.
A little different from most of his videos, this film includes some unique live narration, with Todd adding behind the scenes updates and in-action comments. He shares a bit of his own experience as he filmed this incredible Alaskan fishery.
Thanks to Nate Morris and the whole staff at Royal Wolf Lodge for making this possible. The excellent float plane navigation by Forrest Carpenter, Blake McIntosh and Danny Zito gave Todd, Nate and McKinley the opportunity to get in an create this video for Catch Magazine. Much gratitude for the generous support from R.L. Winston Fly Rods, Scientific Anglers and Skwala Fishing. For more information about the Brooks River, please check out Katmai National Park.

Might be one of the best bites caught on camera in history- 9:38
Another great video, Todd! It was cool to see you help narrate this one. One of the things that I really like about your videos is that there is no audible swearing. I mentor a middle school fishing club and it's nice to be able to show a quality fishing video without having to mute the sound.
Thanks Ken. I appreciate this feedback. It’s all about the kids, glad you’re able to share these films. Thanks for the support.
Todd Moen is the best fishing videographer and his work is truly inspiring and high quality.
The shot of the big rainbow taking the dry is simply magical!!! Lovely film!!!
Thanks! 👍
I enjoyed seeing the man behind the camera. The foreground dry fly eat shot was next level. Thanks for being an inspiration, Todd!
@3:00, so that’s what the Man, the Legend looks like. Another home run, Todd. Beautiful video!
Haha, yep that’s me. Thought I should be in at least one film over the past 15 years. 🫡 Thanks for the support!
Really awesome, great watch! Heading there in August.
I've been to both the Royal Wolf & Big Ku for many years...not only is the fishing great, but the entire operation, staff & guides are the best. When I first came, I mostly focused on chucking streamers every day till my arm fell off...but the dry fly fishing can be fantastic...even throwing dry droppers with nymphs. Looking forward again to my trip to RW this early July.
Have fun this year. You are a lucky guy!!! It’s the best of the best!
Unreal! Nobody does it better.
Thank you!
Nice place and country for stay love it❤
Every time I watch a video on the Catch Magazine KZhead channel by Todd Moen, I always get new inspiration for my next video content. A fishing trip in Alaska that is both thrilling and exciting. Thank you very much for sharing this beautiful experience and good luck always and stay enthusiastic. Mancing Tanago from Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Unbelievable take. A thing of beauty. Well done Todd
Holy cow, how cool is that. I’ve been to Brooks to see the bears but never thought of fishing with the. What an experience and I bet your adrenaline was pumping the whole time you were in the water. Fantastic video.
Thanks! Yeah, it’s was a very wild experience being surrounded by brown bears. So close you can hear their jaws crunching into the bones of the salmon as they feasted on them.
I’d rather be around a bunch of full bears than hungry ones I guess 😂
Beautiful! What a dream trip! So many amazing shots, the giant rainbow going airborne the huge brown bear going airborne just feet from you guys, what the !!@#! So fun to watch thanks Todd!👍👍
Great video, brings back some very fond memories of guiding in my youth up there for Anglers Alibi and Alagnak Lodge. Floated the American a few times and fished the braids as much as I could. Love that place!
Wow. What an amazing adventure and so beautifully documented. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you.
Thanks Dave! Really appreciate it!
That’s amazing Todd! Truly special place.
AJ! Thanks buddy. Hope all is well.
2:47 What a wonderful pike ... trout as well!... So many great outstanding pictures and impressions in your video - awesome work - love it! ... BIG SALUT from Austria!
Outstanding content! The quality of the shots really capture the beauty! Absolutely stunning! Thank you
Todd, I comment on every video how great it is, so not to sound like a broken record, but this was another great one, done a little bit differently. This looked like an amazing trip. I also love your enthusiasm for dry fly fishing. Today, a lot of guys are really into nymphing and fishing streamers, but I'd much rather fish a dry than anything, to the point that I sometimes fish one when it might not catch as many fish. To catch fish this size on dries must be incredible. Thanks for another great video, and great to see you finally.
Hi James! I always appreciate your comments so thanks. Yes, just something about fishing the dry, for me as a camera operator it really just comes down to how visual it is. But I’m with ya as a fisherman, I’d rather throw dries and not catch as many any day.
Making plans for Summer of '25. Can't wait.
So great. Hope you have some great trips planned!
Yes!!! Todd About Time Dude Haha!!! Brilliant Cheers A Breakie Watch In Morning** cheers Tc Liverpool Uk
Hey Tony! Thanks... Appreciate you hanging in there! Enjoy!
Wow what an amazing adventure!! I now want to fish with the bears!!
That’s just it. You truly are fishing right with that bears. Thanks for watching!
MILLIONS de FOIS MERCI, pour cette belle aventure, je pêche à la mouche, dans les petite et grande rivière, truite moucheté, et truite brune, mais de petit spécimen, mais c' est plus grande passion, et vous m' avez fait rêver
I dreamt to fish one day in Alaska.
Beautiful video and great storyline.
Thanks!
Big rainbows in an outstanding location
Hard to beat this place I agree!!!
Absolutely fantastic!

Wow, that was fantastic Todd 👍
Thank you!!!
Braver man than I!
😅 😅😅
Wow! Fantastic Filming, scenery and fishing.
Thank you very much!
Nice one Todd!! That cross river shot was epic!!
Thanks man. Really appreciate that. Finally one of those shots just really works out!!
@@CatchMagazine dude, you have shots I could only dream about Todd. I’m trying to get better with my edits, but it’s so hard to dedicate to something like that knowing you can just catch it!!
Amazing thanks for sharing !
Thanks for watching!!
"Such a creative and engaging video!"
Watched the online live video feeds from Brooks Falls all last summer. July 19th. was the day most fish jumping activity was seen. Also saw a few guys down in the river well below the falls. They were fly fishing and catching some fish. Didn't seem to be any conflict between bears and human fishers, but some close encounters! Only occasionally did one of the cameras zoom in on a fly guy. Mostly the camera operator panned away from the fly fishers as not to intrude on their privacy. Looked like a ton of fun. Cheers!
Heaven!
Thanks. I agree…. 👍
Great film!
Now that is a good fishing soot
that looks awesome
Thanks!!!
Ok that’s it when I get out of the army I’m treating myself to an Alaska fly fishing trip haha
I think a mosquito bite me while watching this!
HA! Good one!
Продолжение , это красиво!
Beauty 👍👍👍
please take me!
❤❤❤❤❤
This is all fantastic and beautiful, but how much would something like this run the average person not affiliated with a Magazine or business? Thanks.
Just curious if the rainbows are that selective? So if there's a green drake hatch, would they take a caddis or even a mouse pattern? Beautiful film!
We tried a mouse and fished it hard with no hook ups. Had a few giant refusals. I think these trout would eat a caddis or even a stimulator… any attractor when they are really feeding hard.
@@CatchMagazine thanks again for the great film.
Just moved to Anchorage for a job. Can't wait til summer. Unfortunately trading 7-8 months of fly fishing a year for 4.
Great job. The transition from the raft splash to the airplane was genius! What frame rates do you shoot rising fish for slow motion? Thanks!
Hold on … raft splash!!!??? Haha. Am I missing something here? 😅 Mostly film at 60fps, but some of the rises and bear shots are 120fps. 120fps max… nothing over that ever.
Thanks! Finding a camcorder that will do 120p ain’t no joke! The raft splash transition I mentioned was at 01:28. Great film!
Someone put a handy blue r.i.b, right at the place your bushwhacking brought you out! 😇
When was this filmed,it seems to green to be this spring already??
6 more days up here
That's the Alaska I dream about but the Alaska I have nightmares about disappearing in😐.
You're not concerned about all those bears? Are you carrying bear spray? A sidearm? Any close calls?
Todd where does that Fat rainbow tank on your list of top take recorded on camera?? That’s unreal.
I consider myself an underprivileged fly fisherman. Hard for me to scrape together money for the ever-increasing cost of fishing license and i need new line this season.
On the plus side, I dont think I heard the words "sick", or "lets go", once. Ill retire to my bare bulb hovel now..
I never got paying thousands of dollars to hire an adult babysitter to show you where to fish and what to fish with.
Well, if you want to fish in that area, unless you’ve got disposable time, income, and your own plane you’re never going to get there.
Never got or never could?? Pretty sure everyone knows what you mean regardless of what you say or what you want people to believe. 😂
I worked at that lodge as the mechanic, if you add up airfare, the lodge itself, and tip, you’re looking at about 16,000.00 for a week of fly fishing. (Per person)
Mosquitoes are worse than bears!
Like a commercial with commercials! "Parking lots" full of float planes, take a number fishing, two hour hikes to get away from the crowd.. Hard pass. Ill just seek the local rivers that haven't been turned into a theme park for fishermen by sellout guides and lodges....Yet...
You’re fly fishing with grizzlies in sight, relax bud that’s pretty cool
invading bears territory of hunt just for fun it's not a very wise move this animals deserve some respect .
