The first half of the kzhead.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.
Finally, an instructional video on how to use the worst possible tools in the un-safest way possible
@@alittlebitofeverything5090 I think this guy was new to the job. He still has all his fingers.
How can you forget the most unstable design too! Wait till someone leans on the backrest!!!
Is it just me, or is anyone else surprised that they still have all 10 fingers?
exactly what I was thinking; was he wearing eye protection?
You are, in fact, not..... It's just amazing, he has anything left, below the elbow.

Nice idea. I once used train sleepers too in my garden. But then I realized that old train sleepers are painted and soaked in a very dangerous poisen called Creosot, which can give you different kind of allergy and is surposed to be develloping cancer, if too much contact. And over the years it will pollute the soil around it. I my country it is no longe legal to use old train sleepers in public areas. You can use it for private constructions, but it is still dangerous and it does pollute.

It's very pretty, but that backrest looks completely decorative; any pressure on it whatsoever and the whole bench and anyone on it are going to tip over.
This bench defies gravity in more ways than one. Didn't get the logic of such a distant backrest. Unless there's supposed to be a cushion. And the beam joining the feet at the bottom is rather badly eaten up. Honestly if two people sat in this it is very likely to tip over. That is why a lot of benches do not have backrests, so that the weight remains perpendicular, or the legs are much much wider so that backrest has perpendicular support as well. Anyway good filming. Tks,
Nice job, however safety first. Those railroad ties are soaked in creosote because they are intended for ground contact. Creosote is very toxic, not to be handled with the bare hands, and not to mention breathing, the dust of cut railroad tie soaked in creosote. spend a little money on some good wood or find a tree that has fallen down in someone’s yard. I’m sure they would donate it to you.
Looks very unstable or is it just my opinion? Funny we didn’t see anyone trying it out. But it’s beautiful from a distance as long as you don’t sit on it. Lots of jagged edges.
Yea, especially with the backrest that far out. I think with a little tweaking it can be a good useable piece
I was wanting to see him put it in a form and then cover it with penetrating epoxy to stabilize it, and fill all the cracks and crevices. Not so much.
I agree
Is that backrest a joke or what? How can it hold anything? Why it's only half done? I don't know but this bench doesn't look right...
@@surfshop7552 Only if the backrest is placed against a wall will it be stable enough.

BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL bench Sir. BEAUTIFUL job. Regards Richard 🇿🇦
Just a note for US viewers, railroad ties, are pressure treated with creosote, which is not a good thing to use in wood working projects.
Usually that railwood is really toxic, even if old. You better use an old barn beam next time 👍🏼
This is a beautiful build, but when you weigh in the chance of hitting a nail or spike, combined with the creosote and repeated application of toxic weed killers sprayed on RR ties each and every year by railway maintenance crews, you might want to pass. This certainly does not detract from a beautiful project.
Beaten & bruised the sleeper wood with so many cracks is it worth your wonderful effort? Classic finish , brilliant idea & work
In South Africa there is a big industry converting old sleepers to furniture.
Aren't those old sleepers marinated in toxic chemicals?
In the United States they are. That said, the termites didn't seem to mind living there.
creosote
Shhhhhhhh, don't talk about that.
So glad this comment is at the top of all these videos claiming they've struck gold with their third world practices.
Jep, they are.
Amazing work. It must be a very hard wood. Warm greeting from Indonesia 🥰🥰🥰

Absolutely love it!!! For sale in a UK garden center for £2.5k
The creosote they treat those pieces of wood with is toxic, not exactly a recommended wood to work with.

You can get canser from it.

First thing I thought… not ideal material… also the poor saw blades
The backrest ruined the piece for me 😉
Que lindo..... Excelente profissional 👍
Excelente labor!!!!
I like the rustic look of the bench with all those cracks, but they are the perfect home for insects that will damage the wood and that I definitely wouldn't want in my home. Maybe it would have been better to fill the cracks with resin or something to make the bench more durable.
I was about to say that I suggest to pour some epoxy blackjet into the cracks and fill them But it's too expensive and no one will buy 🙁so
did you notice the R.R. SPIKE that indacates that it was a r.r. tie that has been pressure treated with creasoak which is a highly toxic cancer causing agent
Also a good place to snap ones clothing. Nice looking, but functional ?
Old cross-ties in my area were treated with creosote. That would repel insects, but it might repel humans too. ;)
@@d.jensen5153 all those wood treating plants are closed down and on the federal clean up list
What's that odd structure you attached to one side of the bench?
its a prank bench if you sit on it you tip over

I did a landscaping project with 22 rail road ties. Found the cracks and cervices often contain small rocks and gravel that can quickly wipe out a chainsaw blade it you miss one or two!

It looks nice. What is the backrest for?
To rest one's back
@@brendanmccleery2224 If one tries to rest his back, he will for sure tip over. The center of gravity is out of the base unless you keep your legs straight, as far as possible from your body
Parabéns seu trabalho e muito maravilhoso
I thought those old railroad ties were covered in something toxic that is horrible for our skin and lungs? Did you run into any problems like that?
No they smell good 😊
they are.
They are also thick of oil from the trains, not the best idea I have seen, not a great idea using a chain saw either, hidden nails you may not see could cause a nasty accident, easier to just go and buy some decent timber to be honest.
Where I live they cover it with mazut that is very bad for you. People sometimes use this wood in their gardens or to burn in their wood stoves not knowing that it is toxic.
In Norway it is usually used creosote on the electric post and rail sleepers. Last forever. But this wood would give you cancer eventually over time.
It could be good idea, or could be not. It depends on antiseptic which was used in thees sleeper, could it be it was creosote or used oil? They are very dangerous...
Half a back rear? Looks weird but I admire the craftsmanship
What a cute doggy
what are you going to do about the saturation of Cresote- a toxic hazards
Seriously, I respect your work and your innovative ways, but a table/or anything with a saturated median of creosote just isn''t wise, smart or.... prudent. Easiest solution, a whoops made a mistake lets stop this and change direciton
Interesting choice of music at the end, an old English tune called Lord of the Dance.

There is no chance short of x raying that piece of timber that it gets anywhere near my equipment
Ballsy to put that railroad tie through a planer but it came out great
Nice work, but sleepers are very toxic and they stink!!
Awesome! a WORK OF ART!
My good friend i have 2 very important informations to tell you about that wood with all my good heart without being rude to you. First the liquid they use to those woods its bad for your health to breath when you cut the wood. Second when a wood like that have termites on it never ever put it in your workshop because they will seek a new house and termites love soft wood so they will surely go to the nice pine woods furniture your making. (I work as pest exterminator) Keep the good work
Old Train wood ties are very toxic with Chriso, especially breathing fumes; So better to leave it alone.
That’s what I was thinking
same
Totally agree
Creosote.
Just what i was thinking.
Isn’t it going to tip over when you use the backrest?
I think it'll break down if we lean back
I don't know where he found this track tie. Here in Canada, ties are now cement or at least the past 50 years they were creosote injected
I work for cn in northern bc Canada and we still use wood ties, prolly install 20 to 50,000 a year where i live. Only mainline gets concrete, branch lines yards are still wood
Hell ya!..looks great!!!
Tetanus shot sold separately, base seems very narrow for flipping over. Other than that it looks good
Free lung cancer from the creosote though!
simply gorgeous

Made a similar thing with scaffold boards, it was very prone to tipping over
I still do not understand what is the meaning of the backrest on this build? It looks very unstable for me. At least should put a 3rd leg under the backrest.
@@bunsoft2 WORD!!!

That was my concern with this bench, if you lean back you might fall backwards 😮
👌👌 How many time awake of work to awake that sleeping wood? Nice vid, tks. PS: It's ok the center of gravity to lean against the backrest? Surely does but I confess gives me the impression don't, or I don't get how.

Lindooo 👏
11:55 looks like you ran out of wood for backrest on the right hand side
Marvelous !
Cool but let's see it after a year of being outside, i predict worse looking than the origina sleeper
There are chemicals usually in rail ties. Not good for builds and health.
This guy either hates his machines blades, or is using someone else’s stuff! I worked on the railroad for 41 years, and know these ties are full of rocks both small and large, along with nails, screws, spikes, and some even have corrugated metal plates pushed in the ends to keep them from splitting. It’s like using pallet wood X 10! I tried the pallet wood crap for awhile, but quickly learned that any money I was saving on wood was offset many times over by what I was spending sharpening and replacing damaged saw, jointer & planer blades! Pretty neat project, this! Just not my cup of tea!
@Tom T pallet wood projects are more labour intensive which outweights the cost saving for some people
nice one
Hermoso
Simplesmente lindo!!!
GOOD!
They used to dip them in arsenic or other such lovely preserver. Not great to.have them around...
If that thing isn't fastened down, the first time someone tries to bridge that gap and lean against that back rest, they'll be on their back when it falls over. Pretty though.
