This will forever be one of my favorite films. I cry every time. It deserves more than 80%! To watch the mom grow from her toxicity, it’s truly moving. The film showing the growth of both characters and how you are more than the pain and suffering around you. The child walking into the field…….
It's not the movie that's touching, it's you who needed such an emotional trigger at the time of you watching it. It's far from emotional in any way, BUT reallyyyyyyyyyy solid until the end, where they either ran out of money or fkn up royally showing the guy in suit, as it's clearly a guy in a suit and all tension and fear goes out the fkn window.
The fact that they used practical effects for the creature absolutely left me amazed. You don't see that much these days. Also, such rich, layered characters. And the back story gets you invested in the protagonist's survival because you want to see her and her mother's relationship flourish. Great film, in my book
Completely concur.. the aesthetics & dynamics of both characters & their relationship allows the film some redemption. Very unique & refreshing film. Had to see it twice to pick up on the subliminal meanings
Would have been so much better if they'd made the monster a little more animal-like. The shiny skin was very fake, they showed it a little too much. Before they showed the monster, having it be in the shadows, that was terrifying

Is even mediocre SFX better then good not great CGI? Absolutely. But you do NOT fck up a SOLID movie by showing a TERRIBLE "man in suit" costume. The movie fell apart for anyone who's seen enough movies.

I really like this movie the drama between mother and daughter was powerful and very intense she loved her daughter she just didn't know how to properly show it and that little girl loved her mom regardless of her addiction and the part that really broke my heart was when they was laying there and she told her daughter that you will move on from me that makes me cry wgat a underrated movie ❤

SO Good! *If you LOVE a Good scary movie, you Cannot go wrong with this 1.* Not a single Jump Scare in this entire movie. They don't need em. Sitting in my kitchen - by myself - screaming at legit scares! Then I turned out the lights and it got worse/scarier/even better. Tons of wth moments! I immediately started trying to buy this after I watched it for free!! It's free just about everywhere right now.

The best desciption I can give you is: It looks like a mix between a bat and a gorilla. Big theeth, strong upper body, weaker legs and skin between the arms and legs that bats have. It looks really bad ass for being a suit and not a cgi monster.

I really liked this movie! The one thing people don't realize is that in the beginning of the movie, the mom is the monster. And when she was faced with a real monster, she becomes the hero. Her growth throughout the movie is so well done. It made me cry because not too many moms who are *monsters* to their children ever get a chance to redeem themselves in real life.
Love this movie. I watch it every so often. She really does love her kid.
I'm pumped, but only because there hasn't been a decent (or even original) Creature Feature in a while.
What really sold me is the relationship between the Mother and her Daugther. What i love about horror is that fear and the looming threat of danger allows us to delve in to these interactions and situations that forces our characters to change. And not just for some cheap scares

I just discovered A24 and realized they're responsible for some amazing work that I didn't realize was connected (Swiss Army Man, Green Room, The Witch). As a fan of creature movies and I really think Zoe Kazan is a great actress, i'm completely looking forward to this! My only question - where and when can i see this? (Vancouver BC)

I seemed to have missed this one this time scrolling for really good thriller movies. . going to go watch now since I see you guys giving it good reviews, now I'm excited !!!! Especially because I seem to love every movie that A24 puts out
This is the best trailer I have ever seen for any film (disregard the girl walking into the daylight) The acting is believable and the sound is sublime. I wish they had included more of that sound in the actual movie. Anyway, still the trailer that I have watched more than any other in my life.
The trailer isn't bad but it's definitely not the best one I've ever seen. Some of the best ones I can think of off of the top of my head are Alien, Interstellar, 300, Inception, The Handmaiden, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the Dark Knight. Hereditary, Goodnight Mommy, The Witch and The Shining are some of the best horror trailers in my opinion. What makes this trailer so incredible to you? I feel like im missing something.

perhaps Im alone at this, but I think the strongest part of the movie is the character arc of the mother and the daughter! and the kid actor stole the show, I though her acting was utterly amazing, at one point I even shed a tear... horror movies suppose to make me cry of sadness? hehe

Without a character driven narrative, The Monster looses its impact. You have to keep the monster hidden, like Jaws or Alien. Only show it occasionally, and when you do show it, *EARN* it. You want something with more monster? Go watch something with more monster. I actually prefer my monster/scary movies like this with a simple but effective story and a creature lurking in the background. What was that the girl said? “They are in the dark, sometimes where you can see them, sometimes where you can’t.”

Since everyone seems obsessed w/ this movie, I just want to be the grounded reviewer and say that this is a DRAMA HORROR. 70% drama about a neglectful/abusive, alcoholic young mom & her daughter who deserves so much better. If you’re looking to be spooked and have a traditional horror experience with THRILLS & scares THIS IS NOT THE MOVIE FOR YOU. Better off watching Lights Out, Exorcism or Emily Rose, Evil Dead. If you’re looking for a VERY SLOW BURN horror with multi layer of drama and depth then this is a GREAT film for you. Needless to say the movie excitement happens 40mins in. movie

I'm divided about this one. I don't like CGI very much but this creature was a bit clunky, looks like of those early godzilla movies. The relationship between mother and daughter though was very well written and the performances were great, specially the girl

Lemme tell you something about this little movie. I just watched it and the creature effects PALED in comparison to the STAGGERINGLY impressive acting performances of the two female main characters. If they had left the whole monster thing out of it altogether and just focused on the story behind the mom and daughter, this director would be up for an IFC award or better. Palpable emotion, riveting acting and a genuine gift when it comes to their trade is displayed by these two power hitter actresses. Had a real "The Wrestler" feel or an "8mile" feel during the mom and daughter story. The monster part is almost a distraction. The true virtue and power in this film lies with the two main characters. I truly hope they BOTH have wonderful careers and are used to their REAL potential.
Only just heard of this film and all I've heard and read, in the cmnts especially is this a really good film. Gonna go watch now and I'll be back. Thanks commenters👍

It got a little hokey in a few spots but I liked it overall. You wrote this comment 6 years ago but zombies and murders are still very prevalent in the Horror genre. Just like demons, hauntings and possible aliens. Which is all well and good, but someone learning to cast them in a different spin of a story would be great! Ive had enough of apocalyptic settings (especially with zombies) as well!
I watched this movie last night .. It was great really thrilling as well a scary mainly because of the fact that their in the middle of no where.. It wasnt like the usually horror films. Another film people should check out is a short film called "dont move" .
