Venice has become the first city in the world to charge tourists coming on day trips to enter the city.
The €5 charge is part of a wider pilot in managing the city’s problem with overtourism.
Last year, Unesco recommended adding Venice on its list of world heritage sites in danger.

I've never been to Venice (yet). However, based on the long lines that I've seen online, Venice could probably charge €15-€20 to enter and it not negatively impact tourism.
5 euro for organise the city for tourists, sounds fair to me.
It might be fair if exceptions not outnumbered those who pay….Amsterdam charges 20€ city tax on every tourist who stays overnight
@@paolodicarli4220 At night Venice is almost deserted compared to during the day.
@@paolodicarli4220 not true
Good thing your opinion means nothing to me
If you're paying a few hundred euros to travel there, 5€ won't matter. It's just an inconvenience.
€5 is not a deterrent, let's call it what it is it's a money-making racket.
It will deter some, and generate revenue for the city.
Yep
@@Otmjv It wont deter shit. make it $400 if you want to actually stop people.
@@taipizzalord4463it's not aimed at international tourists. It's aimed at domestic tourists. So the 5€ would make it a more unattractive destination for those people.
Yeah that's not much at all.
It better to charge people the 'real' environment damage cost from flying.
By day trippers, they mean people on and off cruise ships.
People with large wallets buying overpriced junk with high taxes Oh yes lets deter them, that's smart
I would charge 25€ like museums fees to help out in maintance of it all:)
13 million x 5 euros = 65 million euros in yearly revenue to maintain the city 😉
0:36 think he says 30m so €150m/year
@@adrianwright8685 that 30m includes non day trippers, students and young people
@@Cannon952 young people Ah yes it's always their fault for something
@@lukemorgan6166 I'm not sure you understood my message...
I've been twice to Venice, was so over crowded. I don't think thats going to help,
How do you reconcile the two statements
Please stop asking questions on your website like “would you pay a Tourist fee to enter Venice?” if there is nowhere for us to respond. The answer is yes, yes I would pay a €5 fee to enter Venice. Frankly, I think they are underselling Venice - I’d pay €50 or €100.
At first I saw the "€5" and thought, "lol, that's probably $0.07 in USD or something, I'm chillin. Then I realized it's a euro and its worth more than the US dollar, fml 😞
It’s about the same not much in the $ and the €
USD and EUR, both worth less than the glorious British Pound £
Haha, fr man
Italy isn't a 3rd world country 😅
American idiots, don't you love 'em!
Don't go there then
They can't stop tourists coming into Venice by charging them €5 per day People are spending so much money just to see Venice, €5 will not change anything
Minimum The charge to €20 ...... to respect the residents.
Is this system prone to scam?
Kyoto need this too
Where is Kyoto?
Over-rated city, plenty of other cities in Europe to see.
Industrial-scale theme-park tourism showing itself to be unsustainable. 🤑🤑🤑🤑
Over tourism 😂
Monitoring.
They hate money now...
A simple remedy is to set a maximum # of Reservations booked online, per day at high season, to reduce crowds as many of the National Parks in the US are doing.
If it's only for day trippers, I say go for it. A lot of these cities with an immense inherent historic value tend to be overcrowded by tourists, it's been very evident in places like Japan. I believe they just did a ban on tourists in an area in Kyoto because tourists kept touching and messing with the Geisha there, a ton of Japan's most historic and beautiful places to visit have had the entire experiences nearly ruined by an abundance of tourists or straight up defacing them. A lot of the beautiful temples and shrines don't feel like special places as much anymore, can't imagine how locals must feel when there ends up being way more tourists there than you're very own people, of which these places are for at the end of day. There's some built specifically for tourism obviously but I'm more so speaking about actual historic landmarks/locations. Edit: typos
How much are car drivers charged? Same as London?
No cars allowed into Venice.
its hard for them to drive on the water....given there are no roads in this literal floating city of Venice
Hope this fee can help protection of this beautiful city
it only funds greedy politicians’ lavish lifestyle 😂😂😂😂
That's more than a Cornetto
It is just an excuse by politicians, 5 euro is too insignificant won’t be enough to discourage day trippers. But a lot of money to spend on politicians’ holidays and new ferraris.
5 euros and you get a free peg for your nose, the place stinks in summer.
Editorial mistake: "It'll be available from now, for 30 days, until April" - It's already the end of April!
Manchester has a visitors fee. This isn't new
The residents needs to have some way of controlling the crowds. It's nice to visit, but people live there...
Venice is beautiful and unique but in fact it's over rated, very expensive and stinks...
Last time I stayed in Venice was during a spring tide, I, being forgetful forgot to check the tide table, the Head Porter was none too pleased when I traipsed dirty water all over the carpet on returning. Average Adriatic tides are a few centimetres, spring ones a metre or so causing extensive flooding in parts of the city.
Why didn't you use the duckboards ?
The reason for the lack of fairness in China is the lack of civil rights of the people!
Fairly reasonable considering York charges bloody £8 to get into a gallery/museum! 😬
Only 8 pounds?! It costs $32 (£26) to visit the most popular art museum here in Chicago, $20 (£16) for city residents.
I guess I will not be vacationing in Italy
@MajesticSwan690you are one bat shit crazy liberal
@MajesticSwan690says a bat shit crazy liberal.
Imagine being an Italian and having to pay just to go and see a city that's YOURS. Politicians have become Lords
Nepal or Bhutan have been charging tourists as well for years now I believe.
no i would not pay for example a cup of coffe is about £11.00 a gondolia ride is nearly hundred pounds if you wish to use the toilets in venice its £6.00 its a total ripp off going to venice theres no sainsbury theres only delicatesen shops that over charge nonono..go to spain it lovely people are friendly and they dont ripp you off.
Venice needs a compromise. I think it's not about the Tourists but about bad planning. You have a wonderful breakfast and the day is almost like Tai Chi and you are surprised by two giant ships and a few minutes later Venice looks like landing in Normandy.
Your city has been sinking for years, but this is a new low.
Venice is so poor now?
5 euro in one of the most expensive tourist destination, where a simple pee cost you nearly that much and you overcharge in ALL restaurant...they really think that will reduce the numbers?
Elderly don't all have phones.
It's meant to make Italiens that live near venice not come on the busier days. Why would you pay 5€ more when you can wait for a non busy day and get in without paying the 5€. So it would help in dropping Domestic tourists.
Luckily I visited Venice times already, i spend 3 nights per trip. My fav hostel was a former mills, the sight of giant cruise ship by the window looks like it was about to crash into the building 😢 They can do it like Cairo airport, just pay $35 cash, they put a receipt on my passport!
Now cruise ships are banned in Venice
Nonsense, will not discourage anyone. May get more visitors now, more valuable venue.
Chao,,gracia,,city of venuse is very marvellous,,
Venice is so overrated and it stinks.
You gotta pay to go to a toilet as well 😂
Unlike Brexit Britain. From the river to the sea full of shit. Lol.
Birmingham much better
Even your mother's pussy stank but that didn't deter your father from giving birth to you
Do they want to stop the only source of high income of their economy?
Stupid system, just enforce it at borders or pass it on to travel tickets (train, airplane, etc.). This is not going to work for more than a few days...
I am already used to paying a tourist tax when stopping in Italian hotels since 2017.
it's actually time to cap numbers. Save Venice, reduce day visitors.
Just like Vegas Stop the crowds! Will never happen 😂
What a world we live in. You need a phone and have to pay to enter a city. I doubt they have it upheld in law .
Please never leave the comfort of your home ever again. You don't have enough "entry fee" money to visit my country for 10 minutes.
You're right. This will tra'ck your every move and keep your money info.
You could just print off the QR code on paper and carrying that around.
An money take of the 15 minute city
Been a few times some years back. It's ok i wouldn't brag about it to be honest. I wouldn't go again if they charge money. Goodbye tourism
The “romantic” city uses those canals as the sewers… stinky, but romantic?
Try charging €5:during an aqua alta. They are just greedy. There is already a hotel room tax.
If you are stay in a hotel you will not have to pay the 5€
I wonder if the decline of the population there stems from people seeking jobs elsewhere, especially young people! I guess most of Venice’s economy rely on tourism!
Sadiq Khan would be proud
No he wouldn't that's too cheap
I am not that crazy. What will be next?
5 euros? What a joke, It should be way more to keep out tourists
Too high, and no one would come at all
@@Jace888 For those travelling from far away 5 euros would not keep them away at all. They should consider having a limit per day of visitors then. If there's an entry fee of 10-20 euros that could be exchanged for food vouchers/ souvenirs/ tickets to local businesses. This current fee is just going into the government's pockets and most of it probably won't go towards investing in the area especially since it's only for 30 days.
It's not about the money But no thanks Personally I don't like Venezia Between US/Canada and Mexico I have plenty of places to visit Sorry no Europe for me I have been but only a few places are my favorite No Paris for me, Naples or Venezia
Great decision make places more beautiful
Seems fair to me
Don't worry. All countries will do the same thing. If you charge, we will charge. No free lunch.
I think at a higher price point, so to speak, it could be a good idea. I don't think current day trippers will be in any way discouraged by €5 though. I really believe that if they want to create a decrease in the number of day visitors they will need to increase that fee.
Any other place that was flooded and stank of sh*t would be classed as a disaster and this place is some jewel I don’t get it. But on another note I won’t be going Glasgow again £60 a day fine for driving into Glasgow now that’s a joke
That's too expensive for a ULEZ charge, that's a penalty charge for an offence caught on camera or by a parking warden. As a Manchurian judging from the 'handle' you should know it's impossible to drive anywhere without an ANPR capturing any error.
Venice did not stink when I visited when I visited. I can drive into/through Glasgow without being charged.
@@tonys1636 so Scotland call it LEZ once I got there and parked up I found out about it I was wondering why the place was like a ghost town and only new cars. So I went on the website and put my registration in and it said my car is none compliant ( I have a 2011 vw Passat) it’s £60 a day and doubles for every other violation so I’m waiting to see if I get one for the second day when I left I was expecting something like london £14 a day or something
@@davecooper3238 you might have a newer car you have to have a euro 4 engine for petrol and a euro 6 for diesel. I put my reg in on the lez website and it says my car isn’t compliant. It say £60 a day doubles each breach to a cap of £480 and resets after 90 days of the violation
😮
👍👍 Thanks for the update! Despite the economic recession, I no longer depend on Government Grants since I acquire $86,400 weekly profits.
Great news! how did you get that?
@@RodrigoSpencer-in9io It's all thanks to Amelia Naik...

Wow I know Amelia Naik. Her platform maintains a unique perspective and is very transparent with their investors. Regardless of whether or not she outperforms. I will forever stay invested!
The very first time we tried, we invested $1000 and after a week, we received $4500. That really helped us a lot to pay up our bills.
Yeah because 5 eur vs the thousands they spent on that holiday will be the deterrent
Seems reasonable but is definitely not enough, fact is so many of what used to he permanent residences have been transformed into outrageous AirBnbs, hostels, hotels and foreign leisure homes. This is a plaster on a deep cut, but addressing the harder problems will lead to less profitability, so I won't hold my breath
began to replenish their budget even more intensively

Unbelievable. And if you refuse to pay will you be arrested? Man if I wanted to be treated like a North Korean I’ll just go to North Korea.
Fined. Not Arrested
From what I have seen entering an leaving Venice how would you get in without paying.
bbc charge venice for this newd
None of this will help . Straight into politicians pockets . Don't you people see the problem Only 5 euros more Only 5 more for the eating fee 5 euros more for the nice view fee I refuse to believe , real thinking people are so accepting of this stuff
When is the BBC going to report on excess de@th after the medical intervention post 2021?.?.?.
I'm having my 7th jab, it's been really good. We need to lockdown if we get anymore cases.
Well i ain't going then or buying your overpriced trash if you nickel and dime me every way
Good. Enough Walmart-Tourism. Enough of people taking 5.000 Km flights for 20 bucks, staying in 35€ a night hostel, travelling to another continent to go eat at Burger King's, being obnoxious and completely trashing centenarian cities. When you pay for something, you value it. When you take a week and a half, intercontinental vacation with your entire family of four for 1000 bucks, you act like a pig that's been left to roam in the field.
Won’t deter people, but will be good income for the city
€5 is fair...not so much that it doesn't put it out of reach for everyone but the rich, but enough to help support repairs. Remember, €5 per person...so a family with mother, father, 3 kids would be €25 for one day. If the price was 20 euros per person, many families might be priced out. BUT it might help crowding because instead of visiting the city for 2 or 3 days, they might just visit for one day.
Free money but charge to visit seems weird
Imagine the pressure we could take of our public services and infrastructure if we taxed migrants an extra penny in the £ on income tax and national insurance....
Good luck getting illegal migrants to even pay normal taxes
Imagine how much pressure we could take off if everyone paid an extra penny on the pound in tax.
Why should someone who paid into the system all they're working life and come from generations of taxpayers be at the same point of service as family of 5 with one taxable person who've only arrived today and just started paying into the system.....
Without a Sm phone you wouldn't be allowed in.
@@cocos8903you do know that paper exists right. They even say in the video that you can pay with cash if you don't have the QR code on your phone. 🤦♂️

well worth that price tbf lovely city
€5 is not enough. Charge €10 instead.
Social engineering propaganda. Travel bad, only for those who can afford it and are willing to be tracked while doing so. The frog slowly boils.
Venice is unique and is sinking, before judging the decision

I am used paying especially in tourist spots. Locals often don't expect to fund toilets for visitors.
