In MY opinion it is "old school" in a vaudevillian or "puppet show" kind of way. It seems as though this sort of humor is becoming less...humorous. Even if it's just a buck, it helps promote others who enjoyed it to also give, and it gives the performer feed back about their life choice to dress up as a clown in public.
