Pepsi's Soviet Armada

DID Pepsi have the 6th largest navy in the WORLD???
Well, no. That's a myth. But, there is some truth to it... It almost sorta really happened. We've just added some balls.
Here's how it went down: The Kitchen Debate was a series of impromptu exchanges between U.S. Vice President Richard Nixon, and Chairman of the Council of Ministers Nikita Khrushchev at the opening of the American National Exhibition in Moscow on 1959. During this Exhibition Nixon shared a Pepsi with Krushchev.
After that, Pepsi decided it wanted to be the only cola in the Soviet Union! So they made a deal. Initially, in the 1970s, the deal was simply Pepsi's Cola Concentrate in exchange for Stolichnaya Vodka. But after a little while, that just wasn't cutting it...
So in the late '80s, Pepsi and Russia had to renegotiate the deal. During the negotiations somebody floated the idea of trading end of life battleships and submarines (which Pepsi could sell for scrap) in exchange for Pepsi, but this was rejected as totally crazy. The deal they ended up agreeing on was frigates and oil tankers (and more vodka!) for Pepsi. Pepsi would sell the boats through an intermediary country in order to reap the profits...
But we all know how things went for the USSR... Shortly after the deal was finalized, the USSR collapsed, and Pepsi and Russia had to negotiate a (brown?) New Deal...

  • 1:43 I really appreciate the extra detail given to Belarus and Georgia having a different flag, but Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan also had different flags. And while this could be ignored since this channel isn't entirely dedicated to history, I still find it quite strange that this video (regarding flags at least) is still more accurate than some of MrSpherical's.

However, I still do have a good time watching your videos because what WorkerBoi episode isn’t funny? Your other channels MrSpherical and SolarBalls are also making great progress and I am subscribed to all three channels of course :) Keep up the great work!

  • On July 24, 1959, Pepsi-Cola made history by announcing the creation of the "Pepsi Generation" campaign. This campaign is considered to be one of the most significant marketing efforts in the company's history and changed the face of advertising industry forever. The "Pepsi Generation" campaign was aimed at young people in their teens, twenties and thirties and was a radical departure from traditional soda advertising at the time which was targeted towards an older demographic. The campaign featured a catchy jingle, "Come alive, you're in the Pepsi Generation" and presented Pepsi as a drink that was hip, youthful and exciting. Pepsi's innovative use of television advertisements to appeal to a younger demographic was a massive success, and the company's sales soared as a result. The "Pepsi Generation" campaign continued for over a decade and was one of the most successful marketing campaigns in American history. In conclusion, July 24, 1959, marked the birth of the "Pepsi Generation" campaign, which revolutionized the marketing industry and made Pepsi a household name among young people. The campaign's legacy can still be seen today, with Pepsi continuing to target younger demographics in its advertising efforts.
