Dodge Charger Hellucination Review // 1000 Horsepower Dream, Made Reality
The Dodge Charger Hellucination ($not for sale bucko) is a 1968 restomod built by the custom shop Speedkore. Powering this carbon-fibre-outfitted classic muscle car is an inhuman 7.0 litre hellephant engine, with a 3.0 litre supercharger attached. Because 7.0 litres of naturally aspirated power just won’t cut it for owner Ralph Gilles, Chief Designer at Stellantis, and special guest on this episode. Watch as James and Mr.Gilles spend some time in his very special custom Charger restomod. We hope you enjoy the episode. Subscribe!!

This is an example of a leader, of being humble. Every single time "you did this" he always corrected to his team. You can tell how much respect he had for his team and how it wasnt just him.
100%, the man is humble as fuck and understands its a team effort
@@jamesengelsman9369 I totally agree 100%
I've noticed that in every interview ive seen with him
@@dereklwashington1132 Ralph is a great guy and pretty humble from what ive noticed(followed him on ig) he came up in the business with his first huge success, the 300C
I'm honored to even run into him every so often, he's a great person!
What an honor to both hang out with Ralph and drive his car. His compliment about you “getting” the Viper was really cool too from the father of SRT. Such a cool video!
Came here to say basically this… and you already said it. So I’ll add this… “a video worth watching 3 times…”
Ralph Giles called you human! It's on the internet, James! Everyone saw!
"What kind of safety equipment does this have?" "Next question" Ralph gets it
Ralph is such a great guy, if anyone deserves such a beast it's him!
Yeah his episode on the Netflix show "Abstract", where he described the making of the first gen Chrysler 300, made me super intrigued to follow his career.
@@DannerBanks I didn't even know that happened I gotta find it now
@@DannerBanks is it only on Netflix?
@@megatronusorionpax4900 As far as I know, yeah. It's a Netflix-produced show
100% Agree.
Best bit, I think, was Ralph loving how you guys "got" the ACR. That's a hell of a great compliment!
That's a *hellcat of a great compliment.
I love how humble this man is. Pure and straight to the point. Hopefully the dodge owners can take notes
He’s a dodge owner… Lmao
@@pascuzzicombine7001 Not the average dodge owner
I do prefer how this guy talks as opposed to Tim Kuniskis, a bit more natural. I am kinda getting tired of all that scripted stuff when they do reveals.
Dodge themselves could take a note or two.
James has gone from, guy who makes funny jokes to true journalistic abilities without losing who he really is. You'll see people get big and it go straight to the ego. He has evolved into someone who gets cars, but also design concepts that become reality. Plus, he isn't afraid to ask the tough questions. All in all, great interview and video. Makes me appreciate Dodge that much more.
"where's Thomas? And I'm James" will forever be my favorite intro to anything ever lmao
It was a great encouragement to hear Ralph talk about muscle cars transitioning as opposed to evaporating. I also love the front end, it looks fantastic with the hideaway headlights. Great video!
Agreed... though it still doesn't stop the people who already own/paying on from complaining about "how dodge sold out" Tim said it the best, "It's 1972 all over AGAIN" and most of those complainers are barely older than the L chassis platform they own, let alone the 1990s Mercedes E Class it was based from, because of the era of being Daimler owned.
Ralph is such a badass! Love the humbleness. Also like that he didn’t BS too much on answers and is genuinely excited about the future of his brand
"Humility" 😉
@@kennethalbert4653 both work
@Tyler Miller I was not aware, you are correct ! but mine sounds more sophisticated : )
@@kennethalbert4653 can’t argue with that 🥸😂
@Tyler Miller you demonstrate much humbleness !
This has to be one of James finest moment's, he was so composed driving a 1000+HP Beast of a Car up and down those winding canyon roads.. All while having an in depth conversation with an ABSOLUTE LEGEND. Massive Respect for "Ice in his Veins James" For That Masterpiece Performance 🧊🧊🥶😎✊💯
This is amazing to have a current performance car designer talk about cars. That’s unbelievably cool
“So what safety does it have?” - “Next question.” Lmao 😂😂😂😂
'uh the rollcage, and great visibility' just like gun people who say 'this is my safety' about their finger lol.
The fact that he respects the team and is humble. A true legend.
I tought the Hellcat sound was the most beautiful thing around. I never expected that to be so utterly crushed by the sound of the Hellephant...
do note that Ralph deliberately tuned the sound to be a little bit quieter on this example
@@OmegaEGGY You like adding salt and lemon juice in the open wound don't you?
It’s the truth.
That is a LOUD car! Ralph is always very personable. This car is Dominic Toretto's ultimate dream.
This man Ralph saved Dodge/Fiat!
That the same Ralph was In charge of srt and was on jay Leno seems like a cool and humble guy cool he shared this with T.H for us too see
Guess I should watched a little longer lol
Thanks James for not being shy about driving that beast👍🏼
James never stopped smiling except for the occasional 😳 woah face. And what a great passenger to have riding shotgun. 👌 👍
Wow, complimented review from the man himself. I know James was feeling warm inside after those massive props.
Ralph is such a good interview. He really believes in what he AND HIS TEAM do
I met Ralph at a Best Buy in Auburn hills Michigan like 6 years ago. He was buying a PS4 and was very surprised someone recognized him. I was a huge fan of the viper and recognized Ralph immediately
I love the way the headlamps are hidden on the Charger. It really uniquifies it and gives it a real evil look. Stunning car. Great guy too.
Thank you for this. Ralph is the reason I'm still driving my 2012 Charger SRT8.
And what a badass car they are I fawn over them every time I see it!
This guy is awesome, a real “normal” guy, who does such a great job of balancing the BS he has to deal with making a production car road legal, and making his own car to be badass and with safety being a “next question“. 👍🏻
The one thing I've grown to appreciate about Ralph is the fact that instead of sounding like an overly self important car designer, he seems to be more of a translator that translates the visceral wants of the human condition into attainable vehicles for the masses (well, if dealerships didn't mark this stuff up so dumb). I still remember his sketch of a Hellcat Pacifica or Town and Country on a napkin and thought "How does he make a minivan look so badass".
Thomas is jealous for sure 😂
These kind of videos would be a great addition to this channel. Talk to the people behind some of the cars that are on the road, past and present. He gave some great insight about his car and some Dodge's accomplishments and reasons behind their SRT cars. Thanks for sharing and giving us a "ride" in his Charger.
The fact you got to drive Ralph’s personal beast. 🤯 if anyone can help keep the soul of muscle cars alive in an ev Ralph and his team would be my only bet.
Chief Designer at Stellantis, smiling:"Be professional, be professional..." James, smiling: "Be professional, be professional..."
Throttle house meets "Jay Leno's Garage". I love it!!!
James's smile when Ralph tells him the ACR video was his favorite on the car. The little glimpse into the camera like "did you get that".
He was giddy little boy when Ralph said that.
Ralph reminds me of the original engineers that started ford svt. As it revolves it started to stumble but is pretty well back with ford performance. I love when the “car guys” get to make products
Holy crap, what a dream build. Also what a crazy awesome video. Talk about the honor and privilege of the lifetime to sit down with Ralph Gilles himself.
Kudos to TH and Ralph to bring this in, really an enjoyable video to watch. You guys nailed it again!
Fantastic car and great job guys! I love how Rimac Nevera just casually cruising past at 5:12 which James mentioned later
Good to see i was not the only one who did see that.
Great video and story. Glad to hear they are working on making sure muscle cars don't fade away; as I love both.
As long as there will be a market, these will continue to be made. They'll cost a lot more the fewer they make, but there is no doubt in my mind that they'll be available to purchase.
What a freaking legend!!! Head of design from 08’ to present day. All the beautiful, muscular, monstrous cars this man & his team blessed us with is truly amazing. Ralph is a freaking goat.
This thing is gorgeous. With that much carbon fibre and other light weight materials I'm surprised that it's anywhere near 4K. I would've guessed closer to 3000 lbs.
Loved this video, honestly this much insight is so rare and this is perfect. thank you so much for doing this with Ralph what a great guy
I feel like we shouldn't fully transition to EV yet. I feel like they should make a challenger with a 5.7 hemi but also a strong hybrid system. So you still have that classic V8 roar and sounds but with the added power and range of an EV
Yeah but it would weigh 8,000 lbs 😂😂😂
@@carichar87 not that big of EV system lol
that fly at 3.40min is on a hell of a ride
Big fan of Ralph Gilles. What he as done at Chrysler is incomparable.
The way he speaks is genuinely mind-blowing. Explaining the way his Team was always there and using AMG as a vision...this video is worth an award.
This may be one of my favorite videos on your channel. The passion shows in both of you. I could not help but smile the whole video. Keep it up!
I agree 👍🏼 But it was a little bit to short 😅 I could hear a 2 hour conversation of these two guys ❣️
Starting from 4:56, the way James’ smile looks like it’s just building and building is AMAZING. This was a great moment from the video.
This is why I love dodge and ram. Not bean counters, real car people making what they love for us and with passion. Great video!
Amazing car from an incredible designer. It was also funny to see a Vanagon of all vehicles following them. (6:45)
What a great video. Love that you used the car to facilitate a discussion about the future of muscle cars. What a great setting. Love that Ralph is so honest and forthcoming about sharing his car, work as a team and future. One of the best videos TH has done and one of the best on YT. You guys keep upping the ante.
Now we all know why SRT kicks ass. Ralph is a very intelligent yet humble dude! Great video!
When I hear about the Hellephant I was astonish and I love it, it's good see this beauty ride on the road. I thank Ralph explained us the technologic change about gasoline muscle cars and electric muscle cars
Ralph is for sure one of my fav automotive people. Great video!
"Once you've driven viper, you can pretty fuck with any wheels", that's so underrated truth, these guys did breakdown viper to its core! 👽🤙🔥😈
I love how Ralph just pauses when James, uh, behaves like a child, and waits for the chance to keep talking.
What a total legend. That Ralph guy is cool too.
I'm glad that he came out and said what I've been telling all my friends, if You're going to watch a car review throttle house is the only one you need to watch. You guys by far are the best at adding cinematic, humor and info on a car seamlessly. 👊🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Proud to work under Ralph 👏🏽🙌🏽
Ralph is a legend in the car community and will defend its team and product to the end. We don’t have many people like this in the industry, anymore.
"This is very much not electric." James 2022 talking about a hellephant!😂
'68 was the best year by far. What a cool choice.
I've been tamed by too many tickets long ago and just watching you drive this car and the power is exhilarating.
Dodge needs to put this on their website, this is great journalism.
Awesome video. Always fun to hear from folks that are working literal dream jobs.
This is a really special video and I wasn't expecting it to be. To know that the guy responsible for creating my absolute dream car, that is featured in my favorite TH video, appreciates that video as much as I do, and appreciates y'all making it... is really, really cool. And I'm sure ten times cooler for y'all.
Thanks Ralph for letting James take it for a spin and film it for us. Beautiful ride!
Legendary. I have never heard of this Charger or person until now.
I absolutely loved the video! And I love the comment section! True fans, appreciating the rare, honest, in-depth, and humbling experience we all just witnessed! This channel is great, through and through!
I was 18 years old and I bought a 1969 Dodge Charger 440 RT from a friend for only $140. Coolest car I ever owned.
oooohh Mr Richard Hammond will be so jealous...Ha !!
See when he talks about SRT, it makes me a fan. When everyone else does, I can’t stand em. The 5 Gen ACR Viper is the greatest performance production car dodge ever made. I personally think it’s the best American high performance track car of this era. They took a car that couldn’t help crashing even if it was turned off, to a track monster that drives on rails🔥🔥🔥
Fudge. I love that thing. Love the Charger. 68 is my second favorite classic. I'm now picturing a carbon bodied Challenger T/A with a high revving v8.
The huge grin on James's face as Ralph talks about the Viper ACR video is incredible. Great video.
How humble and encouraging he was to them is a massive attribute to his inner person as a true leader
Absolutely loved watching this and so great to see the person that helped create these beautiful SRT machines.
Fantastic interview…I truly enjoyed it.
*THANK YOU RALPH*
Thanks for this video, what an introduction to a car guy who sincerely has a love for automobiles.
5:11 👁 spy a rimac nevera! Also Ralph is sooo cool especially him saying your ACR video was the best…this man spits facts!
There needs to be an hour long episode of you guys interviewing Ralph, felt like he has so much to share and not enough time. Talk about being on a completely different level!
The man himself that built this car is an absolute maniac 😂😂 in a good way that is
Wow! GREAT video! So nice to hear from Ralph Gilles!
Great video. I really like this format of an interview in the designers cars. Looking forward to the GT3RS with Andreas 👍
This dude is so genuine, inclusive, and humble. I’d love to be on his team.
This is the sickest car ever with no possibility of a counter argument
Love the 60s and 70s cars .. resto mods are so awesome
Can we appreciate the scenery of wherever they are.
Automotive journalism at its supreme best!
Ralph Gilles is one of my favorites in the automotive industry. He's so down to earth with an infinite passion for vehicles and an amazing collection of them as well.
I grew up on Mad Max, the Dukes of Hazard and a love of classic American muscle. And now I drive a computer on wheels LOL. As much as I love the performance of my Tesla, I lament at the dying V8s but am hopeful that a 'muscle/performance EV' is somewhere on the horizon. The new gen of 'performance EVs' won't please everyone and the EV vs. ICE subject can be a divisive, but at the end of the day I'm an enthusiast. Awesome video.
Ralph’s comments on the future of muscle give me hope, but I know that I’ll miss true V8 sound when it is no longer in mainstream production.
Very good! Proud of you James, and all your crew. What a stunning get.
Lucky James, great video. Beast of a car. Ralph Gilles keeping the muscle car alive!
That, is what dreams are made of…I absolutely love this car.
This is now my favourite Throttle House video. Well done, so cool. 🤩👏
This is a great segment.
This was one of the best videos you guys have done. Great performance cars are going to exist forever because of individuals like Ralph. Well done.
Happy to say as a Wisconsinite: *THIS IS WISCONSIN BUILT!!*
Amazing, enjoyed the driving interview style of this one.. The car is beautiful, who doesn't like a 68 Charger.. Restomod or not, they're great. He is a pretty cool dude with some amazing achievements under his belt!!
Chris Harris' review of the Viper ACR is my favorite.
