Video footage courtesy of @FOBBVCAM
You have been asking a lot of questions about bald eagles in the comments so I decided to make a video with answers to some of them.
The video is with a narrator in the form of questions and answers on the example of Jackie and Shadow and their nest in Big Bear Valley (season 2024). 🦅🦅
I hope that you will find this video helpful. Let me know in the comments whether you like it or not and if you want me to make another video on this topic covering other aspects of the life of bald eagles.

Oh, thank you for your reply. You know, watching these two is like waiting for the birth of triplet grandchildren! It’s so hard to be patient. I am still amazed that Jackie and Shadow argue. A lot! Jackie just would not give him the nest yesterday. He was very annoyed. Jumped up and down, yelling at her. At one point I thought he was yelling “GET OFF THE NEST!!! My turn. Then, he left. She had won. I laughed and laughed. Have a great day!!!

Excellent information especially for children but there were many things I did not know as a senior adult. Will the eagles use the same nest next year?

I really enjoyed your informational video about these magnificent birds! So yes, please keep doing them! In addition to general information about eagles, I would like to see more specific information about Jackie Shadow, please. Things like how they became mates, previous eggs, and or babies, how many months of the year are they on the nest, can they swim? I’ve seen conflicting information about the swimming. I’ve heard that if a fish is too heavy for them to fly out of the water, they can use their wings as paddles to get to shallow or water, or shore, to be able to complete the catch of the fish. also they seem to be so sensitive so if the nest were getting too heavy with all the sticks, would they be aware of that, and start building a nest elsewhere, or even perhaps removing sticks from their nest to keep it from falling due to the weight? Are all eagles eyes gold? What can the average citizen do to try to help protect these wonderful birds? Why do a lot of them have lead poisoning? Is it because a lot of fish have lead or because they eat carcasses that have been shot by hunters, and have led from the bullets? do they ever bathe in the water? Can you hear the baby eagles in their eggs before they pip? Can Jackie and shadow tell when there’s no more movement in the eggs and no if it’s time to give up because they’re not viable? I’m trying not to worry about Jackie but I think today or actually yesterday might’ve been the 40th day from the First egg lay. I know for her 39 to 40 days is normal. But maybe 41 or 42 days is too long. And I noticed this afternoon there was a time when she started screaming on the eggs and just flew off and left them for about five minutes. Then one of them came back and got back on the eggs. But it made me wonder if she could feel that perhaps the babies weren’t moving in the eggs anymore or if that is a common practice sometimes? So you can see I have a lot of questions and I’m sure other people do too. So yes, please keep doing these educational videos. Tell us more! We want to know more! Thank you so much for all you do for these fantastic birds, and for sharing it with the world! I’m so grateful to have found them and you! It is truly brightened my life and a lot of my friends lives! And everyone has been so nice, and I love their commentary on the website and KZhead! God bless you all!🦅❤🙏😁
@juliadoty3300 Thank you very much for your great comment and interest in this kind of informative videos. I will try to provide answers to some more questions. You can ask some of them on the chat where the FOBBV live cam is. The mods will probably provide some helpful answers. Thanks a lot for watching my videos.❤️😍🥰
@@BirdlifeOdyssey oh, thank you for the information! And for future videos!
Now I love this video. I have to ask " why do you get to use video footage of Fobby Cam and make statements and David James utube creater cant?" That's not fair. I REALLY DO HOPE you can continue to give your vocal comments, as they help all of us learn about J & S and eagles altogether. David James did this last year, and he was made to stop his uploads on J & S. 😢 i loved his commentary and knowledge. I hope Fobby Cam doesnt make you stop your giving us knowledge. All the Best! And thankyou.❤
I asked for permission to make videos with Jackie and Shadow and received it. I follow the rules which were presented by FOBBV. I do not know why the other person stopped doing it. There can be plenty of reasons. Thanks a lot for you great comment! ❤️

jackie and shadow are so beautiful and funny
@sherriball3178 Thanks a lot for your nice comment! ❤️🥰
I have been watching this pair since Spirit was hatched. As I've followed the day to day activity of jackie and Shadow their actions left me with more specific questions like why do they wiggle back when sitting on the eggs....now I know. This was a wonderful teaching tool and I thank you. All those on "chat" should watch this....thanks again.

It’s about time he came to help
@sherrysaunders3758 Yes, it is. You are right. They are both great parents. Thanks a lot for watching and adding a comment! ❤️🥰😍
Beautiful creatures. I like that they are heavily protected in the USA. I understand it is even illegal to have a feather in one's possession. The fines are punishing if caught. Thankfully the Bald Eagle is no longer on the endangered list after being on the critically endangered list a couple of years ago cased by liberal use of DDT pesticide by us humans.
@afenijmeijer9027 You are right. Thank you very much for watching and adding a comment. ❤️🥰😍
After 62 hours of sitting on the eggs Shadow shows up Jackie squaks where have you been!!!
@Miketheman926 Exactly! 🤣❤️ Thanks for watching and adding a nice comment! 🥰
I’m in New England by the way👊🏻👊🏻🥰🥰🙃🙃
One word: Wow!!! Causes me anxiety when the location is disclosed....I'm afraid of these humans. They will make this a conquest to spoil something that is so pristine.
@jfitzgerald6039 This is the official data of the nest location and nothing is dislosed. Everybody can read it in the description of the live cam feed. There are no details, so it would be hard to find the nest based on this short description. Thanks a lot for your comment!
@@BirdlifeOdyssey Thank you. I feel better knowing that.
@@jfitzgerald6039 Yes. Also, Big Bear Valley is a VERY large area, and the area is under the watchful eye of the United States Forest service, as well. The rangers close the areas near the nest on December 1st, so that eagles and other wildlife can have a safe nesting and breeding season without humans intruding. Friends of Big Bear Valley maintain the cameras, but they do it during the months when the eagles are NOT nesting. Apparently, eagles do not mind humans at the nest when there are no eggs to protect. Also, this nest they are using, is several years old, having been used by several pairs of eagles, each of which adds to the nest each year. By now the nest is six feet deep and five and a half feet across. It's strong and substantial.
@sylvisterling8782 Thank you for the information. I'm a newbie at this type of material so my concerns may seem infantile. The info on the nest is just one more amazing fact on the bald eagle. I have newfound respect for this creature/national symbol. 🇺🇸
No, no, no! You are NOT infantile at all! The only "stupid question" is the one that is never asked, when knowledge can be found. :) A hunger to learn ALWAYS raises a person in my eyes! :)
I saw Harriet deal with a snake at SwFla nest and she fluffed nest more than average I think. She’d fluff at night and around perimeter of bowl. I wonder if IR light draws the reptiles with infra red vision?
@timothymattson3680 Thanks a lot for your great comment. ❤️ Reptiles like snakes have evolved specialized organs to detect infrared light, allowing them to hunt prey, evade predators, and navigate their environment effectively. While warm-blooded animals like mammals cannot see infrared light, these cold-blooded creatures have harnessed this unique ability to their advantage.
Ah great informative video and you did answer that question about laying eggs in the winter and I learned some new stuff😊 I didn’t realize Jackie helped with Raven issue, she was gone an exceptionally long time yesterday, maybe happy hr somewhere😂. I watched live all day! We are all getting concerned about the eggs, the first one is way over due and the second should be pipping by now no? We all want these two to have healthy chicks so bad.💕
I see nothing in the future for the eggs, but it's been amazing watching them. I won't watch when they abandon and eggs are devoured tho.
The eggs may hatch at day 40 to 44 or more, they still have time
@@KB1952INFLA Is that a professional assessment or just your opinion? I hope your wrong.
@@allisonponzo5963 Still hope for Egg 3. Looks dicey for Egg 2 and 1 is probably done in sadly.
@@muwizar This is so sad after they have been so diligent with sitting on those eggs and lost the ones last year.
I was hoping the eagle chick's would hagr hatched by now but with SNOWMAGEDDON happening right now I'm glad they are not at risk of freezing with such protective parents
@paws4mercy643 You are right. They are protective and loving parents. Thanks a lot for your nice comment! ❤️😍🥰
When does Jackie eat? And where does Shadow sleep when Jackie is on the eggs?
@radar5660 Shadow sleeps nearby to guard Jackie and eggs. Jackie eats mainly fish now. However, the diet of bald eagles is varied. I might include it in another video. Thanks a lot for watching and asking! ❤️❤️🥰
God’s Beautiful Creation’s !!
@deborah5212 ❤️❤️
How big is their nest? How does it stay so well in the tree when the wind is blowing the tree like it does?
Great information video! Did J & S build the nest? If so, how long did it take, and/or how many years have they used it?
@rindygood8546 Thanks a lot for watching and asking. I'm glad that you find this video helpful. I'll try to make another video with some more answers. Jackie and Shadow built this nest. The nest is checked and maintained by professionals.

@barbarateeter1010 Thanks a lot for your nice comment! I'm glad that you like my videos and find them informative. ❤️
Where was Shadow during the huge snowstorm?
@nicoleluczynski3786 Shadow normally loves spending time on the nest and does not want to leave the nest, so it seems strange that he did not come. However, Jackie is the one who spends time on the nest during heavy storms and Shadow spends time nearby to guard Jackie and eggs.
He was close by in a snag tree. Imo.
Do bald eagles ❤ keep the same nest year after year? 1:43
I believe they do. Jackie and Shadow have used this same one before.
@donaldprzybysz3934 Yes, they do. Thanks a lot for watching and asking! ❤️😍🥰
@jaegipson2375 You are right. Thanks a lot for adding a comment!❤️
Is there any data to predict time of day for hatching?
@kngsxvigil Thanks a lot for asking but I do not have any data to predict it. Thanks a lot for watching and adding a comment! 🥰😍❤️
Great to hear this information. I discovered these beautiful birds last year and enjoyed the narrative and little details you shared today.
@snorman1290 I'm glad that you like this video and find it helpful. Thanks a lot for your nice comment! ❤️🥰😍
When do they start laying eggs?
@sandramyer7081 In case of Jackie and Shadow: Egg1 was laid on 1/25, Egg2 was laid on 1/28, Egg3 was laid on 1/31.
How can the nest stand the Winds??
@jacquieclark6350 The nest is built in a good place and it is well constructed with all the interwoven sticks. Thanks a lot for watching and asking. ❤️🥰😍
How do they know the eggs are not viable, and what do the do.
@traveltrailertimes7597 When bird parents realize that an egg isn’t going to hatch, they stop incubating it. They may move it around the nest so it is out of the way.
How did you get the camera up there, was there already a nest there?
@LIK64 The camera is owned by Friends of Big Bear Valley and they got it up there. I do not know exactly how. You can try asking on their chat where the live feed is. You can find the link in the despription. Thanks a lot for watching and asking. ❤️
Do they ever rest in nest at same time?
@ritag7306 They take shifts. They do not sit next to each other for a long time.
How many eaglets have Jackie & Shadow had?
In recent history, there was one eaglet named Spirit 2 years ago.
And will Jackie lay eggs every year?
@maurinahendrickson9239 Yes, Jackie lays eggs every year and she will lay them most probably in January.
Jackie and Shadow have feathers on their head. Why are they referred to as bald eagles?
@addison6384 There will be another episode soon. I can tell you that the name comes from an old English word which means 'white'. You'll be able to get to know more in the next video. Thanks a lot for asking! ❤️❤️
@BirdlifeOdyssey, thank you for your explanations, I removed my comment. Good luck to your channel and Jackie & Shadow!
@TheFlashyWeasel Thanks a lot! All the best to you! ❤️
