  • My top tip in London, try the cable car across the Thames to the O2 arena. Takes 9 minutes, fantastic views down the river from about 70m up and costs £3.50, or £2.60 if using contactless card (your Oyster will work as it's TFL). Best deal in the city.

  • Hi Jess. I wanted to tell you a few things about my trip to London. First I was not prepared for the amount of walking we did. On average we walked about 10 miles a day. I usually get in 2 to 5 miles a day at home, so by the time we got back to the hotel each night, my legs hurt so bad I had to soak in a hot bath to ease the pain. Also the amount of people!!!! Omg it was insane the amount of people, I've never seen anything like it. As for food, best meal by far for me was Poppies fish and chips! Amazing, best I have ever had! Favorite attraction by far was Windsor castle, and the town of Windsor itself! Loved itWe also had an amazing meal at a pub just outside of the castle. Hope this helps your viewers.

  • Finally someone who doesn't tell tourists to not do touristy things! I avoided a lot of the tourist attractions in London in the past because I either was a student on a budget or because I was with someone who deemed the tourist attractions overpriced tourist traps. Now I work full time and can afford these things I am finally ticking some attractions off my bucketlist. During my last trip I finally did the London Eye and didn't like it. However, I don't regret it for one moment, because now I did it and know what it's like, instead of regretting not doing it for the past however many years. As for safety, I agree that it's not the price of the hotel that matters. As a solo female traveler, safety obviously is a very important factor when choosing a hotel, but I find that the location of the hotel is much more important for this. I want it to be in an area that is zoned for commercial use (so looks light yellow), so I know there's always people out and about going to the shops and restaurants. Also I try and pick something that is really close to at least one underground or train station, so I don't have to walk far by myself late at night or early in the morning.

  • As a born and bred Londoner the only thing i would disagree with is a Taxi from Heathrow being overly expensive. Firstly a Black taxi to central London (Kensington/Mayfair) will be £65- £75 not £100 and its per cab not per person. Most cabs can seat 6 passengers but even if it were only 3, it's just £25 a person door to door, a train to Paddington might be a bit cheaper but then you still need to get a cab from there to your hotel or lump your bags around the tube followed by a walk. I live in Notting Hill and always get a cab home from Heathrow. As an added bonus all Black cabs are driven by drivers that have done the knowledge of London (google that) which means they've spent 3 years learning London and so are the best people to ask for free advice on London as you travel in. I hope when you do come to London, you have a great time.

  • Went to London in December for 5 days. Got out of Heathrow on a Monday morning (around 10 am) and just hopped on The Tube. Which was not full and dropped me in South Kensington station in less than half an hour for 5.50. My accomodation was nearby and at the end of the street? The Natural History Museum. The Tube was very convenient for going everywhere, avoid traffic; it was cheap and always on time. The London Explorer pass is also a gem for the most expensive attractions (The Tower, Westminster Abbey, Kensington Palace, etc). It is possible to do London well and being able to splurge on shopping or tours!

  • The last time I was in London (2017) it was a no-brainer to take the Heathrow Express to Paddington. For 40 quid it got you there and back without any hassle in great time, something I did not mind paying extra for, especially at the end of the trip when I just wanted to make my flight. But I am eager to check out the brand-new Elizabeth/Purple Line at half-the-price, and now East London options, too! Great video content, Jess. A brilliant channel.

  • Hey Jess, I love your channel and it was such a big help for my London trip, your tips were spot on! I would like to comment on the Gatwick Express however. I arrived in Gatwick in the morning at rush hour and took the regular train. It was absolutely packed and I had to stand for most of the ride. It was not a pleasant experience, especially after a long transatlantic flight. On the way back I took the Gatwick Express and while it is certainly more expensive, it was only about half full, I had a nice window seat, you can store your luggage and it was a far more pleasant experience. So if you're on a budget, I get it, the Gatwick Express is more expensive, but if you're not pinching pounds or pennies, the GE is a good option. Thanks again for all your good advice!!!

  • Thanks so much for the videos. My wife and I just returned from London Saturday. We discovered your channel a week before our trip (to Bruges, Stuttgart, London) and basically binged them for a week. We rewatched some during our week in London to get more details. Very helpful. Did the Oyster passes right off the plane at Heathrow. Put 45 pounds on each of them which was more than enough for the week. That covered from/to Heathrow, to/from Hampton Court, all travel within London for the week. Perfect! We did the London pass because my wife had never been to London and I did all the majors ~35 years ago. Even the timeless sights have changed over that period of time. We went through the process of identifying the stuff on the pass we wanted to see and those we didn't care about. Then we grouped them based on geography in London and then limited them to no more than 3 per day. Worked great. Got full value out of the pass and then some. We wouldn't do it again, but if you have to knock out all the majors in one trip, it's worthwhile. My company has offices in the Shard so we combined the Shard view with getting together for happy hour/World Cup with the office folks there and closed the Redwood :) which made for a challenging first trip through London Bridge Station at 1 am, but we managed. Thanks for all the great tips that made our London trip super successful!!

As soon as we got out of the station, Big Ben was right in front of us. We crossed Westminster bridge (as you do), then did a tour of Westminster Abbey. It was then a short walk to Buckingham Palace, up the Mall to Trafalgar Square, then a short bus ride to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. One of my wife's bucket list items was to see Phantom of the Opera in Her Majesty'sTheatre, (now His Majesty's Theatre), and we did that on the first day of our trip.

Buy food from the supermarket & find somewhere to sit & eat (ok a little cold in January) will be far cheaper than the touristy cafes & restaurants. The South Bank (the bank of the Thames from Tower Bridge to Westminster on the south side) always has plenty to see. There are street entertainers and stunning views of the City. Here you will also find The Tate Modern, it used to be a huge power station, but now a free modern art gallery. Outside, you will find 'the wobbly bridge' which is a footbridge crossing the Thames. (It does not wobble anymore) proper name is The Millennium Bridge. Use this to cross to the north side of the river. When on the North side, on your right you will see The Salvation Army. Go into the building and straight downstairs, they have a very good value café & restaurant.

  • I went to London in August of 2019; aside from the heatwave I had a great time. Booked 2 walking tours and did the London eye booking that and madam Tussaud’s in advance. The only thing I wasn’t aware of was tapping in and out with my Oyster card but even with that I never had to top up and had money left on the card when I departed for the US. Ur videos really helped when planning my next trip 😊

  • I discovered your channel in Sept after I booked my tickets to London for my first trip, and they were all so incredibly helpful and practical, really helped maximize my first trip to London, and use it as a sighting trip for future business travel with my organizations CEO as part of his executive office team. I used apple pay and tapped in/out on the tube, my airbnb was literally next to Euston station, and was about a 2 minute walk from King's Cross. Most days I'd take the northern line into covent garden, and occasionally across the Thames to London Bridge or Borough - I never spent more than £3 a day. Looking at my bank statements after the trip, it seemed that once you tapped in and out once the next 90 minutes or so were not charged, and after $5, it stopped charging. Once converted from USD to GBP back to USD, it basically never cost more than $3.10/£3 with frequent use even if I'd go down to the Thames and back a couple of times a day. Compared to Boston, MA where I live and work, It costs $100/week to just park at work, or basically the same to use the MBTA (our mass transport system which is often out of service or on fire underground or stuck on a bridge and on fire, and still subject to traffic) London overall felt on par, but Boston is also expensive, but for transport London was effectively free. Was there for a whole week and barely matched my single day's garage fare on my Mon-Fri job

The train before the Gatwick Express leaves 8 minutes earlier and arrives 4 minutes earlier. It is usually quicker not to use the Gatwick Express.

    • @@loveandlondon Every time I visit London I take the train from and to the airport. If you buy a return ticket you can use the 2x1 every day, between the day you arrive and the day you go away. And if you buy a single ticket you can use the 2x1 only for the day you travel. This Christmas I'll visit London with my family. One day I'll buy two single train tickets to go from Farringdon to Paddington, and I'll use 2x1 for Madame Tussauds, and for Hard Rock Cafe, then.

  • Hi Jess, your channel has been a lifesaver for my London trip! Your tips were spot on. I want to share my experience with Express Parking at Heathrow Airport. Arriving during morning rush hour at Parking was a bit hectic - it was crowded, and I had to stand for most of the ride after a long transatlantic flight. On the way back, I tried Express Parking, and while it's more budget-friendly, it was only about half full, providing a much more pleasant experience. If you're watching your budget, it's a great option. However, if cost isn't a concern, I'd recommend Express Parking for a smoother experience. Thanks again for all your great advice!

One scenic location I thought was a waste of money was the London Eye, which I thought was overpriced. One recommendation I have is to book a mid week lunch (book way ahead of time) in a really nice restaurant if they have great specials on. An example is Aqua Shard, which is in the Shard and has an excellent 3 course fine dining lunch deal, with spectacular views, all for the very reasonable price of the lunch.

  • Thanks! Regarding the first one, my hotel was in west Kensington and I took a taxi from Heathrow to get to it. It cost roughly 55 pounds, which I didn't think was bad, and saved me the hassle of finding a train, figuring out how to get a ticket for it, and what to do at the end of the ride. All I had to do was sit in my taxi and wait until it stopped. BTW, the taxis all have a design flaw, which is that when you open the door, you can't just sit down because the seat is a foot to a foot and a half from the door, so you have to do a duck walk or otherwise contort yourself to get from the door to the seat.

    @gaetanomaximus8650@gaetanomaximus8650 Жыл бұрын
    • Yes, that's because your hotel isn't that far from Heathrow, in West London. If you were staying in East London, it might have been at least double that. Thanks for watching!

    • Fair play if willing to pay £55, i understand the comfort comment. But in comparison, you could have got to West Kensington for less than £10 on the tube and spent the spare £45 on a nice meal and a cheeky drink.

      @louiem2@louiem2 Жыл бұрын
    • The taxi design isn't a design flaw, it's done so that the taxi is accessible. It's built to accommodate wheelchairs. If you don't want that kind of thing, you're best trying to get a private hire taxi but I don't think they do them around Heathrow.
