First reviewbrah and now Glen. People finally waking up to the fact Pepsi is superior.
What about Jolt Cola? And Crystal Pepsi (They currently have a limited Edition release out here in Canada which I've seen in a big white Crystal Pepsi box full of bottles at Safeway) Looking forward to the home made Root Beer.
You should do a special episode with a bunch of people tasting them!!!!
Pepsi has got a cleaner sharper taste? At least that's what I discovered in the last 10 or so years. Assuming it comes back again this year, you should try Pepsi Throwback or buy Pepsi in the 4 pack glass bottles (which has the same ingredient list as Throwback).
Get that man a Dr. Pepper!!!
I love the existential crisis that developed over the Pepsi.
Pepsi always wins these cola taste things, I think its because it has the most basic cola taste and it's smooth and sweet so it seems like a classic cola. Coca Cola has less cola flavour, less flavour in total but is more bubbly and acidic/harsh.
What I find fascinating about this is this is the exact thing that caused the development of New Coke. Blind taste tests suggested Pepsi had a better taste, and so they developed New Coke -- but the nostalgia factor caused it to be a flop.
As a reformed cola addict I can say Pepsi is tops
@@celticbarry9877 Pepsi has a stronger flavour, especially in the can. Coke tastes awful in a can, it's only decent in a glass bottle. I drink Max now though, all the taste and none of the sugar, which gives it an even stronger cola flavour.
I used to drink Coke with a stout dislike for Pepsi. I stopped drinking soda entirely for a bit to kick the daily habit. When I eventually had a Pepsi, I was very surprised at how much I liked it.

Glen: I rated these the lowest Julie: Those were the cokes Pepsi: Congratulations you played yourself
In taste tests, Pepsi often beats Coke, but that's only for a few sips, and IMHO, because Pepsi is sweeter. Those who think they preferred Pepsi still end up drinking Coke in the long run, because there's nothing like that bite!
@@paulmckenna5224 its definetly the sweetness!! Pepsi has a very syrup like taste and is sweeter but coke goes better with food and especially if you drink a lot.
@@paulmckenna5224 So Coke is crap, but its crap because it has less sugar so its better to drink even tho its crap. That explains why Pepsi is better, not why people choose the brand coke but pepsis flavour.
I also think the coke taste is ruined when you're drinking a bunch of other colas; not all flavors mix
Glen: "The two Pepsis, I rated the highest." Glen's face: "Hello darkness, my old friend..."

It is known that people prefer Pepsi over Coke in blind taste tests.
@@ALRinaldi ... according to a Pepsi advert you appear to have indelibly etched in your mind, no doubt. Market share varies by starkly country - and being a perpetual traveler I can tell you that my preference for either coke or pepsi changes according to climate, country and whether it's from syrup, glass/tin or plastic. So I'd refute that anyone can conduct a universally meaningful taste test. Neither are a single product and neither has a definitive recipe.
@@garychap8384 I find there's a lot of variance even within the same area. Like the Mountain Dew in and around Charles Town WV has a very distinctive flavor compared to stock from towns as close as 20 miles away.
Wow. We used to get that in Europe as cheaper coke got shipped across borders... so sometimes you get an 'odd' coke and when you check the bottle it's Bulgarian : ) There was one which was almost like brown fizzy water, almost no taste. I think it may have been German, but I can't really remember. I guess it was mostly down to local regulations on food and beverages It would be interesting to find out just how many coke and pepsi variants there are right now. I'm guessing it must be more than 20. Best coke I ever had was in Botswana, Africa... it was in the older style heavy 'twist' glass. But it's so hard to tell whether it was nicer - or whether it was just changes to my taste buds due to dietary change, sun exposure, etc.... but a part of me prefers to believe they Africans just get better coke flavour due to lax regulations.
Glen: Pepsi: I'm about to end this mans whole career

@@johnnyvval4719 that's a fair assessment. Pepsi is too sugary, and I dont drink them fast so when they start to "raise in temp" about 40+ degrees, the profile of flavors changes immediately to too sugary and "flat"...
@@dmueller1875, maybe the reason that lots of countries in Europe of the sugar variants Coca-cola outsells Pepsi, but on the sugarfree varants Pepsi Max wins with landslides. in Norway the sugar-free Pepsi Max is more profitable in sales than Coca-Cola, and that even if the later is tided in with mostly every resturant chain in the country.
to be fair: bottled drinks taste much better. they have real sugacaaaaaaaane.
I'm sorry for the emotional trauma this caused you. "52 years, Julie, of fooling myself..."
Mexican Coke in a nutshell: extremely smooth, not as strong as Coke Classic. Reminds me of what Coke was during the 1970s. Being from Hawaii, our Coke was bottled locally, and with cane sugar. During the 1980s, the bottling company here ceased from making the mixture, and basically converted to just distributing. And Coke was never the same ever since. I was among the first in Hawaii to discover Mexican Coke, and I even convinced a local Mexican restaurant to carry it.
Exactly we were pissed off when Coke changed the formula here.
Yeah, Mexican Coke tastes like Coke in the U.S. used to in the 70s and early 80s before high fructose corn syrup was in Coke completely replacing regular sugar. There was a "hidden" change to the original Coke formula that happened around the New Coke roll-out in 1985. As the older of us know, because of huge uproar and backlash, they famously returned the "original formula" in the form of Classic Coke to the shelves reasonably quickly to sit on shelves next to New Coke... what a lot of people didn't realize is that they actually changed the Coke formula at that time. I guess it wasn't as noticeable because it was a few months since people tasted what the old Coke formula tasted like... also, it tasted different from the not-so-loved New Coke, so I think people were just excited to have Classic Coke, even if wasn't exactly what they previously had. The "original formula" was made more acidic tasting (more phosphoric acid and I think some other tweaks) and was converted to high fructose corn syrup for all parts of the country at that point; some regions still were bottling with regular sugar until New Coke and Classic Coke emerged. 1985 was the death knell for regular sugar in all versions of U.S. Coke. (not counting Kosher Cokes, of course.) Personally, I never liked Coke quite as much from that point on. When I discovered Mexican Coke, I was thrilled... I have never gone back to getting regular U.S. Coke since. Best cola flavor for me, easy.
@@KabukiKid I just had a bottle of Mexican Coke. To me there isn't much difference between it and Canadian Coke that is in a bottle. U.S. Coke (to me at least) is less sweet and more acidic. A big factor in these types of taste tests it, are they all at the same temperature. For me, I want Coke so cold that it has ice crystals in it if possible. I often put it in the freezer for about eight minutes before I drink it to get it cold enough.
Me and my best friend had been tasked with cleaning up and old soda vending machine at a local football (soccer for you Americans) club's facilities a few years ago. In the machine there was an old can of Fanta. I don't know when it was manufactured but the expiration date was, IIRC, in 1973. It was the best Fanta either of us have ever tasted.
@@KabukiKid Spot on! The New Coke "debacle" wasn't a debacle at all. I swore when "Classic Coke" came out that it wasn't right. I like Mexican Coke, it tastes like the real Coke.....but not precisely.

It's the lack of music, well organized kitchen and good camera angle.
I'm not sure where I read this, but I believe Pepsi tastes better in small doses, whereas Coca Cola tastes better over time due to the fact that Pepsi is sweeter.
IMO it really matters what it's paired with. I'm a coke guy 99% of the time. But the rare occasion I have Taco Bell, coke tastes awful with it--it has to be pepsi.
Malcolm Gladwell talks about it in Blink. Coca Cola changed their recipe due to the Pepsi challenge. They later realized that people like Pepsi better in small taste samples, but preferred Coke in bigger doses. They quickly switched back when The new taste flopped.
Agreed. Directly compared to other colas, Coke has less flavor but I think that makes it a better drinker over time because you don't get tired of the taste.
@weetwteqtwtwwt I bet you tell all the girls that.
That's why I strangely love the Pepsi kick flavor, but only for a minute. After a few sips it literally tastes like plastic water and chemicals (because that's what it is, duh) The funny thing is that Pepsi Kick is sugar free
Glen, I've loved this entire fascinating journey, so thanks! But as a Pepsi man, that sweet sweet twist payoff was too perfect.
Pepsi men unite with this comment
I'm a coca cola guy and haven't had Pepsi for awhile, but if memory recalls correctly I'd identify it as sweeter too. And as we know people tend to like sweeter things, it leaves me to believe that he chose Pepsi as better because he noticed it was sweeter and associated it accordingly, plus he also thought that wad coca cola.
regardless of the outcome, i really like that there were no quick cuts or distracting music. it was just laid back and easy to watch.
It was fascinating to watch a man's entire world view collapse in real time
I love this unique channel! Interesting content throughout.
Congratulations on recreating the Pepsi Challenge. In sip tests, Pepsi usually wins because it's the sweetest, but its lack of bitters hurts it in large doses. I enjoyed watching this. I also had no idea Juarrito's made a cola.
Super-interesting insight - I knew there was something off about Pepsi generally coming out on top in these things. Now you mention it I realise just how much that slight acidity/bitterness contributes to my finding Coke to be by far the more refreshing, satisfying (not to mention balanced) of the two beverages, especially over the course of a whole serving.
Jarritos*
Right Pepsi is sweeter and that’s why is not such a good mixer with alcohol. Coke has a more balanced flavor profile! The best of the best is the Mexican coke mini-bottles that were served in barber shops in Mexico City for all customers in the 1980’s.
@@jaegerschtulmann Pepsi is BARELY any sweeter than Coke, a can of normal coke has 39 grams of sugar, Pepsi has 41, 2 gram difference, not much whatsoever, probably not even enough to tell the difference with 2 grams spread over 12 ounces.
It would be an interesting test just to try the same brand from a lot of different countries. I bet they would differ as well. Great episode!
Yes!
True - I lived in Brazil for a couple of years, and Fanta Uva (Grape) & Fanta Laranja (Orange) are 100x better - real fruit extract, cane sugar, and very good.

Recently discovered your channel and I just wanted to say thank you for your absolutely lovely videos. The two of you are so kind and knowledgeable!
Quite simply the most off the wall, abstract and fun cooking channel on the tube. Pure brilliance!
Back in 1993 I had a Coke in Prague that blew my mind. I kept saying to my friends, "This is Coke! You don't understand! THIS is COKE!! This is the flavor from my childhood!!" I convinced everyone to buy their own and we sat at an outdoor table and enjoyed our tasting. It finally dawned on us that Coke had changed their flavor at some point and nobody noticed. But when you got a taste of the real thing, your brain was thrilled. It's sad to me. Before this, I had stopped drinking Coke completely. It had just stopped tasting good to me and now I knew why. Ultimately it's a good thing because pop isn't healthy, but to realize that I'd lost my liking for my childhood favorite because they were convinced that they knew better than their customers and pulled a fast one kind of sucked. It's been almost 30 years and when I close my eyes, I can still taste that Prague Coke like I'm drinking it now. If I die with Alzheimer's Disease I think I'll still be able to taste that original Coke flavor.
Coke’s taste can very depending on where it was bottled. Coca Cola Company doesn’t actually bottle the drinks. It’s licensed out by its bottling partners that coke doesn’t own.
Prague?
The look of repeated defeat on his face in this video is just too hilarious!!! Loved this series, you guys saved me A LOT of time, Thanks!

We all have habits and tend to think that they are the best, but then when we finally find the courage or curiosity to try out something new, we may come to realize that what we thought was best for us is actually the worst. And that goes for everything, not just food! Really loved this video 💖
I discovered your channel months ag and came back to it now because it is so memorable. I hope you’re enjoying the season and some gourmet love !
This has been one of my favourite channel for the past month. It is nice to see just this guy and his significant other trying out stuff. In no way I cook often but watching this channel makes me wanna try it some day and having this channel as a guide would be fantansic!
"KFC is back on the map" For some reason, this sounds like something George Costanza would have said. Notably absent: Dr. Pepper.
Dr. Pepper isn't cola though.

Awesome Critique and content... I watched and liked it !
Thank you for sharing and doing the test
I have never before looked forward to seeing a cola video so much! This is going to be EPIC!
I think the issue is side by side tasting and the effect the previous colas have on the one you're tasting. I'm also a "no, Pepsi's not ok" guy. I've given it plenty of chances and I've always found it too sweet.
u must HATE Dr. Pepper
He tried it at the end side by side and still picked Pepsi
Pepsi is too sweet if you drink a full glass, I think the issue with this test is that they only taste a small sip of each drink (understandably as drinking 11 glasses of coke would be pretty grim) and therefore stronger tasting/sweeter drinks don’t have time to become sickly
@@calummacleod7119 I really think this is true. You take a sip of regular coke and it really does taste "less" than pepsis, but I still find it more drinkable in full glass quantity.
back in 2003 I went to a buffet with a friend. He ordered diet coke, I ordered coke. When we came back from taking food, the 2 glases where standing on the tabel without note, whcih is which. I tasted mine, thought, "tasts a bit iffy, must be the diet" my freind tasted his: "Na, mine is for sure diet" OK, so we left it at that. On the bill later we saw, well it was Pepsi :-D Not that I would refuse pepsi, but if I drink cola, then prefferably Coke.
This channel without a doubt has to be one of the most entertaining and down to earth for those who like food science and whatnot.
That old 80's Pepsi formula beat Coke AGAIN! lol (They use the old real sugar recipe in Mexico)

SAME! Finally I found someone who thinks the same as me! ^^ And people look at me like I'm crazy when I say that, lol. Thank you for this :D
Everyone knows there is a huge difference in flavor. Thats how they get away with importing the large glass bottles of Coca-Cola from Mexico and charging more. Mexican Coca-Cola is made with real cane sugar and the older caramel flavoring and less carbonation. Fun Fact, due to new California Proposition 65 changes in 2018,all colas and darker colored drinks sold in California that use certain ingredients were either lowered or eliminated in order to not have the “Prop 65- This product contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer or reproductive harm” printed on them by law, so yes, almost all sodas or colas in California are different and may have affected colas nationwide.
Pepsi uses natural, sweet sugar in their cola. However, Royal Crown (RC) and Coca-Cola do NOT use sugar, opting instead for the bitter, artificial, man-made corn syrup (they stopped using sugar during the "sugar is bad for you " propaganda scare of the 1980s--the same disinformation that resulted in "Sugar Smacks" and "Sugar Pops" cereals being renamed "Honey Smacks" and "Corn Pops"). And all sodas taste better in glass bottles because plastic bottles and cans absorb the sweet taste and the carbonation, leaving you with a more bitter, less carbonated beverage. This is a scientific fact, not an opinion. Why RC and Coke haven't switched back to using sugar by now is baffling at best, and downright stupid at its worst.
D L Pepsi only uses sugar in their “real sugar” labeled packaging. The majority of it is made with high fructose corn syrup as well. Also Mexican Coke and RC in glass bottles both contain real sugar as opposed to corn syrup
No, it's not only you. They are really taste different. The most tasty stays in glass bottles. It also depend on how they were stocked in the stores (sunlight and temperature exposure and other).
Glen choosing Pepsi is VERY consistent with theses kinds of Cola taste tests!! Pepsi has a distinctly sweeter taste BY DESIGN to always seem preferable to Coke in a straight up challenge. Notice all the Pepsi vs Coke challenges are run by Pepsi? That said, most people asked to start AND FINISH the entire can, usually prefer Coke by the end, because the extra sweetness becomes overwhelming.
Definitely didn't enjoy come until I chugged an entire can.

What a revelation! Mexican Coke rated as the WORST? I think you need to take a week off and rethink your life. If it's any consolation it could be a drink-ability factor. You might prefer Pepsi in a taste test of one sip each, but if you had to drink the whole bottle you might prefer the Coke because it's less sweet.

I am Mexican, I live in Mexico and I wasn't aware that Jarritos has a cola flavor! I've never seen it anywhere. Now I have to find it and taste it.
Hi Glen, the problem is when u normally drink a coke or whatever u don't think in the mix of all types of flavours that contains the drink. U just drink. Its difficult to remember a flavour when u normally don't think of it. Cheers from Argentina! u got a new sub!!!
Pepsi usually wins sip tests because it's the sweetest. In full serving size tests it's too sweet. That's why the Pepsi Challenge used small cups.
10% sugar vs 10% sugar
@@MaximRecoil Here the difference is 10,9gr/100ml vs 10,6gr/100ml makes it a 11% solution vs a 11% solution
@@MaximRecoil Those are most likely the same numbers as the American standard, 2 grams difference is potentially 1-3 grams difference by lack of significant numbers. And the 12-ounce can is a 12 fluid ounce can (no idea if it's a net volume). So yes, Pepsi may need 3% less than a full serving to compensate for its even greater excess in sweetness
You have to try RC Draft from New Zealand, it's what RC really tastes like
Has been super fun to follow along with this series. I've also been trying to make homemade Splenda cola, with no coloring and no caffeine. I compared commercial brands recently and was surprised how good Pepsi is. I remembered it being overly sweet compared to Coke, but that's not true at all. I'd be hard pressed to choose Coke or Pepsi as a favorite now.
This was better that expected 😂. Thanks!
You should market your own cola recipe. Call it “artisan” KZhead cola Edit: as the reply said artisan squozen cola
Squozen artisan youtube cola yes
I always found Coke to have a watery and more acidic, almost mild ginger beer taste and Pepsi a much more full, stronger and defined flavor.
Just LOVED this video
There is just something about these videos that puts a smile on my face.
Squozen Cola wins the Cocademy Award for Best Cola Name!
As I've seen in some comments, it would be advisable to rinse your mouth after each taste to get the best from each sample, but loved the video either way especially the meltdown at the end :)
Another great video glen, thanks for opening my eyes to all the different cola drinks
one of my new favorite channels on YT. Cheers
I had the same experience. I was a die hard Coke drinker for about 45 years, then one day found out I liked Pepsi better. 🤯
you're both so great! i loved the end! hah!
What? How can you not like Thums Up? I love thumps up! Also I was really surprised that Thumps Up's flavour stood out the most. I do agree it tastes very unique, but I can't imagine that none of the other colas have a unique flavour.
Fascinating. Oh, and thanks for editing the burps out.
Wow... RC is my favorite one, but I do enjoy Pepsi quite a bit, especially Cherry Pepsi
I'm from Chicago and RC is like a staple in pizzerias. I find Pepsi to be a bit too sweet and Coke to be a bit too harsh, but RC is like a middle ground
RC is the cola king but cherry Pepsi/Coke are the best, IMO.
RC cola "One star not good..." The entire Southern US /grabs pitchforks
RC and Pepsi have always been my favorites. I always drank RC growing up in Michigan.
More Pepsi in the South I think. It was born there of course.
I would also point you to "Virgil's Cola" unlike any that I've ever had. You can taste the spices in it. Delicious!! Great page you have. I love your on screen presence, very soothing.
I've always been a Coke fan, but once I asked for it at a restaurant, loved it, and found out they only have Pepsi products. I credited the fact that it was dispensed and on ice, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the same boat as Glen.
Not only two data points, but it's a TASTE test. It' about subjective opinion, so it couldn't have been scientific. As a recent graduate with a degree in astrophysics (as well as a former professional cook), I support this channel and its unscientific taste tests and I look forward to trying some of the recipes I've seen here (just need to get a job first).
I think it's a fun video to watch, just take it with a grain of salt when you watch it. I am curious to see how his opinion would change with a full can or bottle of Coke and Pepsi though, rather than just a sip.
KFC is back on the map!!! Love it!! Julie's face and laugh was priceless. 🤣🤣🤣😲😲
that was great! really does make me want to try it
Very cool! Might be a life change event for Glen.
