See What We've Done for Better Turkey Habitat! Our turkey population is extremely healthy - lots of poults AND mature toms! Grant Woods, Ph.D Wildlife Biologist shows an easy habitat management hack that you can do on your hunting land for more turkeys!
For more videos on deer hunting, turkey hunting , food plots, and habitat managment see our channel @GrowingDeerTV
This hack may not work on if you are hunting public lands, but it will be easy to implement on your leased or private hunting land.

I went threw and cut everything small sold all the logs to saw mill tops went to fire wood. Was also covered with red cedar cut everything I could sell going to burn in spring. 120 acres grossed 78k in wood so far will start the other half in fall. I do have a saw mill that buy from me 6 inches small end 7 foot oak for pallets. Being a logger has advantage
Yes it does!
Can’t wait for the update!!! Love these videos of progress!!!
Thanks Donald!
We had about 7 show up with a hen at a feeder at the farm this afternoon.
Fun!
No poults on my ground, but first population of turkey since I purchased it came in. 5 Jake's, and 4 hens. They're roosting next to the cabin. I haven't been mowing all of the grass, and noticing they are taking a liking to the seed heads, and insects calling the tall grass home. Hopefully as years progress they stick around, and the poults follow!
Don't put any hunting pressure on them for a while. Let em multiply!
@@BlackEagleFeather I don't plan on it for a long while. Already started with deer hunting, but what the turkey to establish.
@@thomasgartner3104 I've got plenty on my place but I usually only take 1 bird per year here in GA.
How many acres is your property?
@@lukedog7028 just 15. Humble beginnings
I did a lot of hack and squirt on my property last year. I did it by myself and I plan to do some more this year and years to come as a work in progress. One thing I noticed is the wood dried out really fast. I was surprised. It was like the herbicide (I used the mixture you recommended) “sucked” the moisture out of the trees. This year I have noticed an increase to plant life on the forest floor and I only expect it to get better as time passes.
Excellent work! Congratulations!
Yes I have a bunch here in Kentucky!
Ryan - That's great news!
I like the forestry content, great videos!
Thanks Nick! Habitat management fun and a critical part of wildlife management.
All the local birds have very successful broods
Excellent! That's great news!
Getting a few random single hens on trail cams and zero poults in Kentucky. No groups of hens at all. Experiencing bad drought here and super hot temperatures.
The reports seem to be very spotty this summer - there was a good hatch in some areas and not in others.
Good morning, Here in NY on my farm we have a lot of thick honey suckle that grows as soon as you open the forest canopy. When it is small deer browse it. As it grows up above the deer it shads out the forest floor so nothing else grows. Honey suckle is not a native plant. What are your suggestions to control this woody brush?
Andrew - Bush Honeysuckle is a very invasive plant. It can be cut close to the ground and treated with a herbicide. I strongly recommend you treat it as it will continue to spread.
@@GrowingDeerTV it has taken over many old farm fields, pastures and ever opening in the forest in this part of NY. Birds are the main spreader as they produce an abundance of seeds. In hedge rows I have pulled them out by the roots and it slows them down. Goats will control it if allowed to browse the young plants. What generic herbicide would you use?
How long until the leaves start falling off and won’t grow back ? I have done a girdle( one ring with a chainsaw) /chemical mix Garlon mixed with basil oil we definitely see a difference but the leaves didn’t fall off but they also don’t look healthy
Pending on the tree species, Garlon can take a while to mobile throughout the tree.
When hack and squirting, is it a good idea to follow up and rehack the same trees as before maybe a year later?
Danny - if used correctly the first time, there will be no need to return.
In my state of Alabama when coins start falling over dead from rabies the state often steps in and applies rabies vaccine from aircraft. Do you think this is a good idea or not?
Luke - great idea as coons and spread rabies to pets, livestock, and even humans
I have a question for you and I know you don’t like my questions but I think it is a fair question. Do you think you could or have you ever turned public hunting land into a place that is as good or better than your farm? The only catch would be that you have to use the current laws and harvest rules of your state.
Luke - as I assume you know, that's a very loose question but yes, there are many well managed public areas that produce great bucks.
Would Corteva’s Pathfinder 2 work as a herbicide?
Matt - Pathfinder 2 controls about 80 species. To learn which ones checkout: www.greenbook.net/corteva-agriscience/pathfinder-ii
Is there a place to find these products, 3A in smaller than a 2.5 gallon jug? Thank you for anyones assistance.
Pupp - we purchase them online.
What chemical do you use for tree herbicide for hack and squirt?
Different species often require different herbicides. A blend that works for most species is 50%Garlon 3A, 40% water, 10% Arsenal AC
@@GrowingDeerTV not sure how a guy could afford to buy that now lol. I could make a car payment with what that would cost me to buy those chemicals. Any cheaper options?
How long will it take until the leafs die on a tree thats been sprayed
Corey - That depends on the tree species and herbicide used. It can take up to a year with larger trees.
Will a brush killer herbicide work for a mixture to hack and squirt
No it needs to be close to the mixture described for a for sure kill
Undiluted Glyposate works great for me.
Penn state says the undiluted 2-4-D will work just fine but for harder to kill species like hickory use a 2" hack ratio instead of 3"
I have used Garlon with basil oil seems to work I also ringed the tree with a chainsaw then add the mix
Kevin - There are too many variables to answer your question accurately - tree species, etc.
