  • I am the oldest sister and this song gets me every single time and brings me to tears. It's sad to see how families put a lot of burden and expectations into a brand new little life. That is why many of us, the oldest siblings out there have in common feeling unheard, not validated, unseen, as if you were going to solve all the family issues yet you have in your power to work on this, transform it, and let it go to prevent passing, as much as you can, to next generations. Personally, this song and let it go from Frozen are two really powerful songs with great lyrics.

You get a moment to rest, only to immediately be put back under stress again. You're so used to it by that point that you don't even feel anything but an "ok..." anymore.

    • And when Mira looks uncomfortable or scared by Luisa’s strength and the burden she’s carrying, that’s when Luisa starts dancing. Even though she’s still singing about her burdens and struggles, she’s doing a fun dance as if to show Mirabel “see, it’s okay. We’re having fun” even though the fun part is all on the outside. It’s just for show to make Mirabel feel better.

      @Annie_Annie__@Annie_Annie__2 жыл бұрын

    • @sugarush magnolia 🌸 Sort of... being overly emotional is seen as a negative as far as the movie is concerned (The most emotional character in the movie is considered a total joke that isn't worth considering and the movie never stops relentlessly tormenting her), and a lot of the movie seems to deem controlling one's emotions as the positive, but not to the point of denial. . The main reason why the movie doesn't treat emotion as the enemy is because the movie is an "internal" battle, not an external one (not even an externalized battle). An external battle tends favor rising above your emotions. A internal battle tends to favor becoming one with your emotions.

  • as an eldest sibling here, I remember trying not to cry here since my sister and brother are watching Encanto with me so I don't want to show them that I'm being affected by this song since I don't want to put guilt on them, I especially relate to the lyrics "give it to your sister, your sister's stronger" we're always expected to be the strong one, I remember how my aunt told me in the hospital that I can't cry or breakdown infront of my dad or my siblings even tho I'm literally dying inside when my mom died. it hurts how my mom was already buried but I still couldn't cry and only brokedown when I no longer can't hold it, I cried on my friend's shoulder in a school toilet when I returned after missing months of class because I got told that I might need to repeat my whole school year (fortunately my History teacher helped me reaching out to my other subject teachers)

  • Everyone is understandably in awe of her appearance, being feminine with big muscles, but what stood out to me was her voice. Having a character with a deep voice that is still celebrated in song and isn't at any point the butt of the joke is so rare, I love it so much.

    • Yeah me too! Her voice was the first that took my attention and that made me come back to listen the song again and again. I also love the glotal stop when she says moun'ains. Strong, buff, but still feminine. I love Luisa too. I loved the endscene where she's slung in a hammock and offered a drink, like "Here girl, you damn well deserved this. Enjoy."

    • As a deep voiced woman this stood out so much. Alto women are the villains or the old maids. Not the reliable, beloved sibling. My whole life I've had one Disney song that wasn't a guys part I could sing and it was Ursula who was based on a drag queen. That's what people think of my deep voice. There are a handful of songs by some of the mezzo-soprano princesses that I can sing, but those are few and far between and often have a high note that kills it. But here's a true alto song by a character who's not elderly and not evil.

      @bboops23@bboops232 жыл бұрын
    • Even moreso, when she sings about her confidence, her voice is deep. When she's singing about her dreams and fears, it's higher. So confidence is shown as deep, anxiety as high.

    • I think, historically, people have pigeonholed female vocal ranges . It took a long time to recognize the value of black gospel song styles that defy the "rules" of mainstream vocal training. This and Lego Movie 2's Not Evil (Tiffany Haddish) both push the limits, being great songs with female vocalists that don't have the "standard female vocal" delivery.

This song and Luisa’s whole character profile is so relatable and I think that’s why everyone loves this song so much. It reminds me of bo burnham’s vocal performance, while he isn’t doing insane runs and hitting whistle notes, he’s adapted it to fit into his voice and music. Same can be said about the voice actress Edit: so a lot of people are saying that her voice sounds forced… and uhhh I’d just like to specify that that’s LITERALLY Luisa’s entire character??? She made the house come back to life, she basically predicted Antonio's gift, she wanted to make her grandma proud, as she learned more about all her family members she no longer only worked to fix the magic but promised them all a better life once it was all solved, making Bruno come back, Luisa take a break, Isabella be herself and not marry who she doesn't want, hook up Dolores with who she thought she'd never end up with

  • English (Inglés) Lyrics (Letra) I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous I'm as tough as the crust of the earth is I move mountains, I move churches And I glow, 'cause I know what my worth is I don't ask how hard the work is Got a rough, indestructible surface Diamonds and platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em I take what I'm handed, I break what's demanded, but Under the surface I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus Under the surface Was Hercules ever like, "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"? Under the surface I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service A flaw or a crack, the straw in the stack That breaks the camel's back What breaks the camel's back? It's Pressure like a drip, drip, drip, that'll never stop, whoa-oh Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh-oh Give it to your sister, your sister's older Give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder Who am I if I can't run with the ball? If I fall to Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa-oh Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa-oh-oh-oh Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger See if she can hang on a little longer Who am I if I can't carry it all? If I falter Under the surface I hide my nerves and it worsens, I worry somethin' is gonna hurt us Under the surface The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is Under the surface I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this? Line up the dominoes, a light wind blows You try to stop it tumblin', but on and on it goes But wait, if I could shake, the crushing weight Of expectations, would that free some room up for joy Or relaxation, or simple pleasure? Instead, we measure this growing pressure (pressure) Keeps growing (pressure), keep going (pressure), 'cause all we know is Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa-oh Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh-oh Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt and See if she can handle every family burden Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks No mistakes, just Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa-oh Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa-oh-oh-oh Give it to your sister and never wonder If the same pressure would've pulled you under Who am I if I don't have what it takes? No cracks, no breaks No mistakes! No pressure!

And there are a lot of people with absent parents or who have to take on more pressure even if their parents are there just because of personal things

  • Personally, I think the reason we see that Luisa is constantly protecting Mirabel in this song is because she never wants her to feel how Luisa thinks shed feel without her gift (worthless). The difference between Luisas relationship with Mirabel and Isas relationship with Mirabel is really cool to see. Luise clearly loves Mirabel so much and wants to her/protect her, whereas Isa sees Mirabel as "getting off easy". She doesnt have a gift, so Isa sees that as he not having to provide anything for the town or family. This movie is so good.

    • And just to add, you have to think for everything Luisa is going through (the idea she's only useful for what she can provide) she can relate to that "worthless" feeling; her strength isn't really "hers" but for the benefit of everyone around her. There's a kindred spirit there, and being the older sibling, a protective instinct (obviously.) So, so much depth. And as the younger siblings myself, I can see Luisa in my sister a bit: stronger than she ever should have had to be. ❤

Really pushing home how much she is there for her family "in service" to them as her only purpose, and that scene where she's holding her over the steep cliff and it cracks translates to me that doing that is breaking her, constantly dragging her down to save everyone, to hold them up. • I genuinely loved that so many of the things asked of Luisa were so trivial, but since her strength comes from magic she is under the family pressure to “earn” her miracle. The townspeople should have easily been able to round up all their own donkeys, but nope, have the strong girl do it. It made the ending so much more powerful when the rest of the town came to rebuild - magic made their lives easier, but the Madrigals are more than the sim of their gifts and don’t need them to find fulfillment.

  • Love this song, as the young sibling it makes a person realise some things about your oldest sister. I also loved how the donkey were afraid then were dancing along near the end. 😂

  • I love that this song isn't just about her being physically strong, but apparently the family has been placing every burden and problem directly on her shoulder to the point that she feels obligated to handle all of it, not just physically but emotionally too.

    • @@TrueWizardry Abuela isn't being intentionally malicious. She does genuinely care for her family, but like many older people in the real world who grew up during tough times, that fear of losing everything you built and returning to those "dark days" can cloud your judgement and perspective. A simple but common example being how a grandmother who lived off of very little food growing up having the tendency to fatten up her grand children whenever they visit. Their deep rooted fear of not having enough food to go around can spur them to keep overfeeding their grand kids as an understandable, but unhealthy expression of love.

    • That’s exactly how it is for me I pushed myself too far I tried to take in all of my loved ones problems because I’m a man… I’m supposed to do that, right? Well I guess not because now I’m a complete wreck… lol I remember when I was an extreme nationalist I used to compare it to France vs the US mentality of “NEVER SURRENDER” and “I SURRENDER” well, I guess I’m the French because I surrender.

    • @@TrueWizardry From my perspective the issue with Abuela is that she's so obsessed with this positive opinion people have of her perfect and superpowered family that she puts the needs of the people above the needs of any individual. She doesn't even see her family as people anymore, but as powers and services that they can provide. If you notice their powers have very little to do with what they're expected to do for the town, at least with Luisa and her sisters. The oldest daughter can make plants at will. She can solve world hunger with a flick of her finger and all Abuela sees her as is a flower maker and someone pretty to marry off so that she can have great grandkids at some point. Luisa is super strong and super durable so she literally functions as a work horse for everyone in town even stuff that they could be doing for themselves. And because the main character is powerless she's seen as a burden and not even part of the family. Abuela didn't even bother having a room for her made the hard way because her powers didn't manifest in a way that gave her one magically. The way the village views her family is so important to her that when a door opening happens she invites the entire village and has this massive speech about using their gifts to benefit the the people of the village. Abuela is just horrible and that horrible-ness eventually destroys the the house which is used symbolically to represent the family. As you can see in Luisa's song the heaviest thing that nearly crushes her is the house specifically which as I stated is symbolic of the family.

    • @@J-manli Intentionally or unintentionally malicious she's still despicable as a person. We can view this by looking at the powers themselves and how they function. On Luisa's side of the family her mother and sisters all have powers based on servicing people. the mother heals people with her cooking, the older sister can grow plants for beautification (though her major contribution to the family according to Abuela is that she's beautiful and easy to marry off, not her power). Luisa is a literal work horse for everyone else in the town (which is why they place her alonside donkeys which are also "beasts of burden"). And of course the main character has no power and is therefore seen as useless. Then you have Antonio's side of the family. All of which are specifically dedicated to gathering information which allows Abuela to remain in control over the village. Shapeshifting, super hearing, talking to animals, and of course the mother's near random weather powers based on emotions. Then you have Bruno. His power was to tell the future, but he usually foresees disasters or negative events, he doesn't change the future or control anything, he just sees what's going to happen and even that's usually just a possibility. This isn't something that Abuela can market off of so she ends up shunning him and treating him badly because he doesn't benefit her directly. That makes Abuela a straight up villain, she might not be as obvious as other Disney villains, but she's manipulative and horrible.
