After stunning a lot of people with back-to-back wins over Anderson Silva, Chris Weidman defeated another Brazilian in Lyoto Machida for his second title defense at UFC 175 in 2014.

There is a weird phenomenon in MMA where two people who are the absolute best in their divisions fight for a title, and then a new person comes in and beats them both. You started watching UFC because of Weidman? 💀
Here we go. Weidman vs Brad Tavares ufc 292
Prime Weidman was a beast, I have to admit - before he lost his chin which saved him a lot in this fight.
I really do think a prime Chris Weidman could and probably would beat Izzy today. Weidman fared pretty well against elusive counter-strikers thanks to his cage-cutting, patient striking, strong wrestling and Jiu Jitsu skills. He was a bit reliant on his chin though, which against more aggressive and explosive fighters like Luke Rockhold and Yoel Romero proved his undoing.
@@madgavin7568 I think Izzy would knock him out prime or not the games evolved a lot
@@dawg4769 The game has evolved somewhat yes, but Chris Weidman's style is still a nightmare matchup for Izzy as Chris' style was tailor made to fight Anderson Silva who has a similar style as Izzy. Weidman would have done things to Izzy other Middleweights today are not doing, for instance clinching up when Izzy's back is against the cage, pressuring him constantly and also cutting off the cage to nullify his elusive footwork. Checking leg kicks and performing takedowns in the open are also keys to victory for him as well. Robert Whittaker would probably knock Weidman out because he's a stylistic nightmare for him. But against Izzy? Prime Weidman has the best shot out of any Middleweight presently to beat him, in fact I'd go as far as to favour him in that matchup.
@@madgavin7568 How do you think prime Rockhold or Jacare fares against Izzy?
@@aleksisuhonen5433 Prime Jacare was a fucking beast on the ground and had tremendous knockout power and prime Luke Rockhold has good kicks and wrestling and Jiu Jitsu

1:21 the call from Joe rogan. Absolute genius holy smokes
This Weidman was an absolute tank
One of the best fights I've ever seen.
It really sucks that Weidman can't take a punch anymore. I really like his fighting style.
Weidman was a bit reliant on his chin throughout his career to take shots, once it went it affected his career badly. He didn't adapt and never recovered, such a shame because he's one of the best Middleweights ever, a fact overshadowed by Anderson Silva and more recently Israel Adesanya.
Me too, he was an aggressive ground and pound wrestler, not a cage pusher
Father Time gets us all. My coach who is 40 odd has been shut off in training by guys who would have hit him 4x harder in live combat. We just don't take damage the same as we age. We don't 'bounce back'. It's nothing you can lose or get back, it's inevitable. No declining chin. Just time and accumulaton.
@@madgavin7568 And the fact that his wins against Silva were not as decisive as Israel's was. Yeah he got a KO in the first one but that was after Anderson was picking him apart for the entire fight and decided "this guy isn't on my level" and chose to showboat and got caught. And of course the second win was a freak accident. But he went on to have one of the top 3 best MW title reigns of all-time (Anderson and Israel are 1 and 2), he didn't waste those two blessings.
@@joebenson528 Stop the revisionist history please. Silva was not 'picking him apart', Weidman was winning the fight off of activity. Also, Silva always used to fight like that in the past and rack up impressive wins to the point fans praised him for being 'in the zone'. Fickle fans only changed their tune once Silva lost. Did he take it up a notch against The Chris? Yes, but that was purely intentional as he was doing everything he could to make Weidman frustrated so he would make a mistake and Silva would capitalize with counters. Only The Chris was prepared for it so the taunting backfired. Both his wins against Silva were decisive because they were finishes and he was winning both fights. Second fight had a freak one in a million outcome, but Weidman was still winning that fight even more handily than in the first fight as he nearly finished Silva against with strikes in the first round after he rocked and dropped Silva off a clinch break. Silva fought worse in the rematch because his confidence was shattered from the KO, and his coaches will attest that Silva fights best when he's most confident.

Silva was way past his prime
@Dacian American He was already 16 years into his MMA stint. That's a ton of wear and tear on the body. MMA-wise he was no spring chicken. Dude was on the inevitable decline due to wear and tear and age. MMA is not a career, it's a brief window of opportunity for young men who usually peak around late 20s early 30s then it's time to move on. It's not like being a cashier at walmart for 20 years. The most aggressive machida has ever been
Weidman was a beast at this point. Lots of pressure. Strong kicks and punches. Durable, super determined. Classic style not many special effects but effective. Physically very strong but fizzled out quickly at top. Prob is by the time they make it to the top their bodies begin to break down. Lots of non stop years of competition doesn’t lend the body towards longevity. It’s why guys turn to gear towards latter part of career.
Back when Weidman had a great chin. Crazy how he went from the top of the division to Bellator material in about 1 or 2 years.
Luke Rockhold hurt Weidman badly. Yoel Romero made him chinny.
Even in this fight, he keeps his mouth open at all times. Machida does too but hes better at defending himself maybe. His chin lasted longer.
I just hope they induct Machida into the UFC Hall of Fame one day. That's where he belongs. Along with 2009 era LHW. Shogun, Rashad, Rampage. When LHW was at its peak. Those we're the 4 horsemen of the LHW during that stint of UFC.

Chris Weidman has lost so much as of late that I almost forgot that once upon a time he used to win fights.
He was once the middleweight champ and rank 2 p4p fighter.
Undefeated too... PreUSADA Weidman was a boss.
@Alex Amaya Barely, he almost got finished and was saved by the bell. He was so afraid of Gastelum's standup that he kept diving for takedowns the whole fight.
@Alex Amaya Ha, I saw a much bigger man put on his ass hard in that fight. Gastelum was lighting him up like a Christmas tree. He was so superior than Weidman at striking that there was one point where he was just moving his head around and dodging all of his punches.
This was the defining moment for Weidmans career. To show the Anderson Silva wins were not flukes
Many Anderson fans still beg to differ, and chalk up this win over Machida as against a 'washed-up' version of him. Some people still can't grasp reality when they witness their heroes get defeated.
