  • One thing I didn't mention in the review was the death system. If you die a second time in Lies of P before recovering your Ergo, it doesn't disappear forever, and instead each hit you take on the way back just decreases the amount you recover. I honestly don't have an opinion on this as I can take it or leave it. I'm genuinely curious what you guys think of this, am I the only one whose indifferent?

  • 40:08 While i agree that it shouldn't have been an unlock for the dodging. I believe (personally) that it is that way in the beginning to encourage the player to focus on getting better at deflecting.

    @Jaknife101@Jaknife1017 ай бұрын
    • Adding on to this, seeing how much attention went into the combat design and animations, I want to say that the decision by the developers to make it an upgrade had to have been intentional. I just can't see a game with such a tight focus on combat and boss encounters making a decision like that on a whim. I do think it was a mistake, and if they patch and replace those upgrades with something else and give you the better movement by default I'll be happy, but I honestly feel that they did it as a, albeit misguided, learning mechanism for the deflection system.

      @Jaknife101@Jaknife1017 ай бұрын
    • Personally I don't see why being able to link two dodges together should be the default option, sometimes we find the silliest things to complain about. We're playing as a puppet who has just woken up, give him a minute to get acquainted with things lol I do agree that having this from the start would likely lead to players focusing more on dodging rather than guarding, and truthfully if you play the game without an emphasis on the guard mechanic you can still find success. And as for rolling off of the ground, why did you get smacked down there to begin with, it's not like every single enemy can just knock you over, and those who can likely hit you with a powerful and telegraphed attack, what's the problem with being punished for your mistake, it'll just lead to you learning from it. Peace and Love Gamer!

      @justkubz@justkubz7 ай бұрын
    • @@justkubz Yeah, that is also a fair assessment for why it would be limited from the start. There are a couple of moves enemies/bosses use that I believe (or at least very much look like they do) combo into each other if they pin you down and if you don't have the dodge off of the ground leads to you getting wombo'd. (2 examples that spring to mind are the shovel brutes where they slam the ground repeatedly after their fury attack, and victor in phase 2 [maybe also phase 1? Can't remember] where he throws/slams you on the ground and then moves to a stomp attack), in situations like that where you can react with upgraded movement but are punished for *not* having it I can understand someone being frustrated or even calling it unfair in that instance. Case in point, I haven't restarted on a fresh file yet but I feel that if/when I do just having to adjust to the movement options simply not being there could lead to frustration. I'll have to try it for myself soon to see though, for now it's just a hunch.

      @Jaknife101@Jaknife1017 ай бұрын
    • @@Jaknife101 Thinking about it more it does seem like if the upgrade is a must pick option, meaning that if you don't pick it you can find yourself at a disadvantage, I can see the criticism, but some of the upgrades are also increased uses of the pulse cell, which many would consider a pretty critical upgrade. I think at the core it does help the player really feel the power progression but I can see why the frustration has been voiced as it has. Thanks for the reply gamer, stay awesome!

  • Good review One thing to note that I notice from your footage is that you rarely parry Parry really is what makes this game great. Yes, you can dodge but parry is what builds up the enemy's "destruction" state and causes the white bar to glow white way faster The Eldest of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood you can basically get into a stagger after parrying 2 combos, he's legitimately easy once you learn his timings

    @blinkachu5275@blinkachu52756 ай бұрын
    • Yeah, I noticed this, too. Also, you can just block a lot of attacks without too much of a penalty. Whether you missed a parry or just didn’t want to risk it with a timing, it’s often fine. Stamina seems to regain much faster compared to ds games, so you can get chip damage back pretty reliably.

    • I think that explains most of his issues with the bossfights. Delayed attacks and long combos are annoying if you try to dodge them, it feels like you're just waiting for your turn while the boss has fun. When you parry, you're the one comboing with posture damage. It's always your turn. Also, many of the delays are long enough that you can sneak in an attack or two. Bonus points for charge attacks and fable arts. With a bit of confidence you can bully even the harder bosses. Imo there's only one bad fight in the game (black rabbit 2 electric boogaloo), and a couple mediocre ones. The rest are excellent. The final 3 are easily some of my favorite fights in any game ever.

  • Lies of P is only the third Soulsborne/Soulslike I ever played, is indeed the most difficult one yet, and despite being a newb to these types of games, I loved it. One of my favorite parts of the game is the way the skill tree is implemented. The fact that even if you don't unlock a specific ability from your p-organ, you still receive buffs just by using your quartz and select said buff. It's sometimes why I just go back to the hotel and use up the quartz ASAP as I find those enhancements to have a greater impact. Than the main skill you're unlocking. Also, have to appreciate the overall presentation of the game. The title screen alone, particularly when it changes based on how far you progressed, was a pleasant surprise. Also, now that I know DJMAX exists, very cool of Neowiz to reuse a couple of their songs and put it into the game.

  • After my third playthrough, I think every single boss is an S tier, I found out just like Sekiro after you get used to the perry timing the game gets extremely satisfying, and then I started to notice how well designed each boss is how each attack is perfectly perryable how there is literally no bs attacks at all, I think bosses in this game are at a much higher quality than EldenRing bosses maybe because I love standing still and perrying attack instead of rolling and jumping more, but the idea that every single attack can be learned mastered and perried is just amazing, it's as satisfying as perring in Sekiro or shooting a gun at an enemy just before an attack to stagger it in bloodborne, it's just so badass, I made three builds adavnce, motivity and technique and the game justflows smoothly with each build. Lies of P for me now is in the top tier of souls likes right there next to Sekiro and Bloodborne.

    • Same, Sekiro was my first souls game and this game gives me that same feeling all over again.

      @randomnobody9229@randomnobody92297 ай бұрын
    • I have been thinking this earlier. Sekiro has mastered the combat style it uses. It is just so great. Lies of P gives slightly more choice for players. Mainly, how much they want to play dodge game and how much parry /perfect guard game. These both work great and are totally great games. However, I think it´s much harder to balance the fights like that when you have huge amount of different character build options ranging from pure caster (several different types of casters too), to sword and board style and from spellsword, to powerstanding dualwielder or someone swinging huge weapon and relying hyperarmor and big hits (btw. poise and hyperarmor are something that´s missing in Lies of P). I´m personally one of those players, who can appreciate wonderful combat of Sekiro and Lies of P, but I like even more the available build options of Dark Souls games and especially Elden Ring. Bloodborne is somewhere in between, but it has just enough options and the story, atmosphere and everything is so on point that it might be my favourite of them all. Tough time calling the best between Bloodborne and Elden Ring as they have very different strengths. Anyways, my point being, it´s easier to balance things when you have basically just one weapon and more or less only one preferred playstyle. Also in Lies of P it´s easier to balance bosses when the game is pretty much completely linear. Devs can plan at what point of the game and at what level approximately players are facing which boss. I think it´s about 100x harder to balance the bosses in a gmae like Elden Ring because there´s so much options, be it character build sor the order and at what level players approach the bosses.

  • It beat bloodborne for me personally. I think i have around 900 hours into that game since launch. I like a game that has interesting combat, a real story, and 60 frames. Also, this is the first souls game where i didn't want to run past all the enemies after awhile. That's pretty much when i knew.

  • Laxasia is probably one of my favorite bosses from any Souls-like game, FromSoft games included. From start to finish (it probably took me an hour to beat her) my adrenaline was pumping and it was the most exciting fight I had in my first playthrough. When I mained Two Dragons Sword in my 2nd playthrough, Nameless Puppet became my ultimate fave boss in the game along with King of Puppets and Romeo. My most hated boss is Green Monster. I liked the Brotherhood fights. I guess this is because of my stubbornness, since I decided early on to just parry every boss I encounter. It took me a lot of tries but by then I learned every moveset, understood the rhythm that the devs intended to make with these fights, and made the game more satisfying for me to play. This is just to offer a different perspective from the criticisms you made about the delayed attacks and other stuff. We all had different experiences playing the game and I think that applies to all games, that's why sometimes reviews can be a little subjective, especially if a game has different ways to play. With that being said, this is a very well made video. Great work!

    • See, you had the exact opposite kind of stubbornness to me. I basically refused to learn how to perfect block, or block at all, until I fought Lady of Illusions. I literally forced myself to learn how to perfectly guard just so I could beat her.

  • Neat. I'm appreciating hearing others folks' opinions on it. I went in not quite sure how I'd feel about it, came out absolutely adoring it. It is up with Sekiro and Elden Ring as one of my top 3 fav Soulslikes, dethroning og Dark Souls and possibly even beating Sekiro due to its many smart changes that help embrace some variety in builds. But I also liked a lot of the bosses you didn't (though Puppet King was overall my fav, as well) and didn't have a lot of the issues you ran into? After practicing against bosses I was usually able to beat their entire first phase without taking much or any permanent damage. Just a matter of taste, I suppose, re: the boss patterns/etc. and I can appreciate that it's a bit too difficult to play on the fly, I suppose I'm just used to grinding out these kinds of bosses. The main thing I didn't expect going in was that this was more like Sekiro than Bloodborne, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise as I really liked Sekiro's tighter, more focused gameplay.

Just like how bloodborne taught you to not play like a pussy without directly telling you to not play like a bitch, this game teaches you to not rely on dodging because they don't want you too rely on dodging. I don't think it's bad design, I think lots of people are tynna play the game wrong because they think it's just like bloodborne or dark souls at first.

One or two audio errors: some zones have a looping song playing that was replaced with a high pitched screeching after the first loop. It looked and played really well. • After playing through the game a handful of times now the delayed attacks don’t really bother me anymore now that i’ve learned the parry timings, but it can be very frustrating when you’re learning the bosses. The only ones I still find a bit annoying is swamp monster phase 1 slam attacks, jesus they are way too delayed. The bosses in general are pretty solid and there’s a handful of them that are really good. The combat itself is also really satisfying which goes a long way in making this game so good. Nameless Puppet is an amazing boss, I haven’t gotten satisfaction in a boss fight like that since Sekiro. Normally I hate delayed attacks but I don’t mind them against Laxasia. Once you kinda learn the tempo you can parry her attacks easily and some of the delayed attacks are so slow you can literally just run away and don’t need to worry about timing a dodge or deflect. I still really like the first phase but the second phase was too stressful for me for a while. Simon Manus is garbage though

  • Great review! If there's another thing Lies of P's story has that is similar to FromSoftware's games is depth. The Soulsborne games have iterations of references to real-world, archetypal stories that are *really* good and takes references from things such as alchemy, the occult, and other such things. Lies of P does this as well. It iterates stories and concepts from Gnosticism (Monad, Valentinus, Sophia, etc), alchemy (the Alchemists and their symbology, the last area: Below the Abyss, Giangio's real identity, etc), other literature (The Picture of Dorian Grey, Wizard of Oz), and even anime (Ergo Proxy). The thought put into their story is *phenomenal* and is, I think, a great nod to FromSoftware's style of storytelling. Also, because I happen to really like it, the mechanic of being able to regain a Pulse Cell Charge after it's been Discharged is such a fantastic mechanic. The fact it is a reward for playing well enough to earn another healing charge is such a cool thing to have especially in a tough fight like against a Boss. You happen to get wrecked enough that you use all your heals but because you happen to fight well enough after the game rewards you with a heal in order to see if you can finish and succeed in your comeback. And if it does help you win? It feels *amazing*.

  • Another thing about the parry system that is very important, im not sure if you talked about it or i just missed it but if you block or parry an attack you have a brief one second window where your parry window is extended, so parrying rapid attacks is so much easier if you know this, you can tell your doing this if you block or parry an attack and notice your block is still being held up even though you let go of the block button. I didnt know this my entire first playthrough and once I found out in my second playthrough bosses become 10x more easier and fun.

Not saying it was necessarily the best choice, but if that is the case then i can see where their heads were at.

  • your boss takes were really funny to me, because when it comes to my top 5, we agree on the first two- nameless puppet and king of puppets. but the next three in my top 5 are, in order, laxasia, simon manus, and the second black rabbit brotherhood fight. was interesting to see how different our views ended up being. for me, simon manus captures so much of the same energy as his namesake, the father of the abyss, which is my favorite dark souls 1 boss. a frenetic fight with a fucked up monster man trying to beat you to death with his feral combos just hits. as for 2nd BRB, idk, i found the aggro management in that fight to be totally fine. it was honestly the only boss i beat first try besides walker of illusions.

  • 2nd phase Archbishop was insanely cool, albeit some camera issue if you stay locked on to one side the whole time. I really liked that you could choose which move-set was easier to fight and play it however you wanted, I had no issues sticking to the backside head. Swamp monster was incredible, I love how they reused the Scrapped Watchman for the second phase while adding awesome new attacks and follow-up animations to a move-set you should already be somewhat familiar with. Black brotherhood 2 they still back off and fight you one at a time (taking turns) only with two throwing things instead of one big guy charging you, how is it that much different from the first fight? Seems fine to me. Laxasia is one of THE BEST bosses in any Soulslike and even beats out some SEKIRO bosses!!! I kinda agree with the Simon Manus, it felt like a little step down from the pure excellence that is Laxasia. Just felt like more of a spectacle fight and rewarded dodging more than deflecting at times which is a big change from most of the bosses that came before. Except for the criticism about animations, they felt fine to me. Definitely wouldn't consider it a "giant let down" as you put it. Really not sure why you had so much trouble with the delayed attacks in this game, definitely never felt like guesswork to me. Strange criticisms overall, I thought most of the bosses seriously rivaled or even superseded the souls games in terms of design.
