The Jaguar I-Pace hit the ground running when it arrived last year, scooping up a number of awards thanks to its excellent driving dynamics and powertrain. But now it faces stiff competition from the Audi e-tron: the German manufacturer’s take on what a big, electric SUV should be. So which is better? In a first for DrivingElectric, we put both cars through a series of tests to see which comes out on top…

  • You also might have mentioned that the Jag is trail rated as well. It can go 22 inches deep in the water, (and retain it's warranty) and has an, "off road" mode too!

  • Fair impartial review. I agree. Jag gets my vote all day. 1 thing - jags NVH and range is adversely affected by those 22” rims (nice as they are), so not apples to apples ...but I’m splitting hairs.

  • I own both an I-Pace and a Tesla (Model 3). I also test drove the Audi e-tron and a Model X (my previous car was a Q5 TDI) before making my purchase. I found the Model X more expensive, fugly interior, too large and slower (only the Performance one was faster off the line, but it's still a barge). I really did like the AuotPilot and the range. The Audi was fair but I didn't really feel it. It felt like a first attempt. The Jag surprised me in a good way, it handled the best, it's AutoPilot equivalent was pretty good (not quite as good as Tesla) but not bad at all. Fair on range, superior luxury and quality of materials, sexy styling and good price (for its class). In the US, the Jag is selling for 10K off + 7500 back on your taxes. When I got mine, Jag offered free financing (don't know if the still do). That made it significantly cheaper than Tesla which came in almost 20K more before the financing savings which add several more dollars. I had thought of waiting for the Taycan but I knew it wasn't going to cost a mint. If I had 3 kids and did a ton of family vacations I might have went for the Tesla due to its range. But with my kids in college, (my son snatched the Model 3) I found the Jag was perfect. I plan on keeping it until solid-state batteries come out at which time I'll reevaluate.

    • None of the free financing and 10K off will matter since the Jaguar will be almost worthless after a few years.

  • Jaguar brings best of all me personally. Loved the ride of my old Jag, i’d assume this is nothing but better. Now, i’d usually always take an Audi interior over Jaguar. Jaguar feels little cheaper inside. Though it seems they put a lot of quality and better looking interior in the I-pace. It’s nice compared to the rest of their line-up.

  • I drive the E-tron and will say the following: 1. With my driving pattern, it doesn't really matter if the range is 190 or 210 miles, I will only notice the difference a few times per year. 2. Charging pace is just as important as range. What's the benefit of 10% extra range if the car charges 30% slower? Every time I stop at an Ionity station, I laugh at VW owners who have to spend 2-3 times longer there. 3. Don't know about the UK but in my market, the second charging port is an optiional extra. 4. It's certainly not a sporty car but definitely relaxing. 5. As a family man, I really need the extra cabin and boot space that the Audi offers. Driving the Jaguar would be an annoyance on every weekend getaway and I would constantly have to use a roofbox to store things that didn't fit in the boot.

  • If I were looking for a new electric car, I would choose the I Pace. I have a Chevy Bolt and I enjoy the heck out of it. 238 - 245 miles of range in the Summer and about 180 miles in the Winter.

  • I have a Jaguar F-Pace 20d from 2016 that my wife drives, and it's going to be replaced by a E Tron Sportback 55 quattro. It's the first and last Jaguar I'll ever buy. It only has 30k miles yet: - problems with the dpf filter, which is needing to be replaced, already set off the fire alarm of my garage a few times - I chose a manual hoping to be more reliable, but at 10k miles the clutch had to be replaced, always getting a stuck clutch pedal - at 5k miles (!!!) it was making loads of noise in the cabin when starting and accelerating, eventually complained, and the frigging engine mounts had to be replaced - the mounts of the exhaust system had to be replaced - cheap plastic materials for the price point - and now finally, the engine light is coming intermittently, probably because of the dpf filter and the well known oil dilution problem of the ingenium diesel engine. Jaguar's solution? Advice people against buying their diesel engines. All of this on my wallet! Can't wait to sell it. Had an Audi A5 for 8 years, no problems in more than 120k miles, now my A6 Avant C8 already has 24k miles in less than a year and no issues. JLR can go bankrupt for all I care.

  • Jag released an over the air update which improved range by 9% from regenerative breaking software they developed in formula E, so the range has actually increased since this car was new. No additional cost. No increase in battery size or weight. I’ve driven the E Tron and while it’s impressive, it feels cumbersome and heavy and only in sport mode does it feel nippy. It’s very dulled down in E mode. And that front boot area is very archaic as mentioned.

  • There seems to be an assumption that people who want to go electric want a sports car, i’v no interest at how fast it can go 0-60 , I want a great feeling car that’s comfortable and easy to drive , I test drove the jag and it was great ! But soooo much plastic and don’t get me started on the laggy screens, the Audi in terms of interior was light years ahead of the jag! Super plush materials butter smooth screens too. I’m just waiting for the eqc test drive before I make a decision but for me , Audi is way more comfortable then the jag. What is t mention here is the fact the jag charge for everything you wails want for this price range I.e electric boot blind spotting, cruise control eg by the time you add them on the price between the Audi and jag are a lot more closer. Food for thought

    • As someone who owns the I-Pace, here are some tidbits. 1. Demand the latest software (19B) or higher. The older versions were buggy. They have fixed a ton of bugs, still have a few but no longer annoying. 2. Get a home charger. The one they provide takes forever to charge (at least in the US). 3. Take it out for a spin. It handles great, really good. For giggles, I raced my friend who has an older Cayman S. I beat him. LOL. I told him I can beat him with a 65" TV in the back. 4. When you drive like a nut, the guestimates on range go way down (as expected). When you decide to go back to normal, turn on the car (but don't press the brake pedal) then press both pedals and hold them down for 10 seconds, this causes the guess-o-meter to reset.

  • Good review thanks, but for me the I Pace is way ahead. Longer range, quicker, lighter,better handling and less money, these are the important points that matter. Yes the interior matters but both are very good, storage space in both is adequate and not a deal breaker. The Jaguar name still carries some prestige, although they have a poor reliabilty record, obviously this Jag is too new to have any real history of reliability.

My '18 i3S Rex 94A in my 70% freeway 30% city 59mi daily commute, I arrive to work at 75-78%, after driving 29 miles very consistently. So that's easily beating the EPA figure of 97mi. • Like you can't compare Model X with them as people who wants to buy E-Tron, I-Pace (like I did) or EQC (EQC is not sold yet) wants to have premium car and there is nothing premium about Tesla, when you sit inside it feels like Dacia or Fiat Panda, super cheap and badly build and instead of real leather they use this plastic thing. No thank you, for that money I wouldn't buy it, only Tesla which makes sense is Model 3 as its cheaper car and don't expect anything premium from it.

  • What lets this car down, and many others (excepting Tesla) is that the car manufacturers rely on third party electrical charge station suppliers leading to problems such as differing plug points, charging time, having to download apps. to use the charger, if you find a charger suitable for your car. Look at Tesla who have their own charge points over a growing number of places, simply scan your bank card and charge your car. Unless other manufacturers follow suit then Tesla will be the less hastle car to have in regard to charging your battery. Maybe manufacurers can emulate Tesla in uniformity of charging stations for charging any brand of vehicle ( petrol cars have a uniform petrol entry port enabling fills at any station irrespecrive of station owner) but don't hold your breath.

  • The WLTP figures are never accurate for range. If you want accurate range figures for electric vehicles then look at the US EPA ratings. I find the EPA ratings are almost always spot with the real world range.

    @popularfrontforliberationo8917@popularfrontforliberationo89174 жыл бұрын
    • Am not sure I agree with you. I am getting way better range than the EPA out of my I-Pace. On average about 284 miles over the last two months. That's only about 10 miles less than the WLTP rating. That said, if you look at the way the EPA rating is calculated (check the details they use for EV's), I am not surprised.
