10 Insane Ways Animals Give Birth

Animals live in all sorts of different environments, so it only makes sense that the way they reproduce is different than how humans do. Sometimes, this process gets really weird. How weird, exactly? Most animals give birth from the womb, while one particular frog gives birth from its back! If that wasn’t weird enough, wait till you how the Darwin frog barfs up its own babies! When it’s on a smaller scale, it gets really gross. However, when it comes to big animals such as the humpback whale, that poor creature has to carry a 1.5-ton heavy baby in the womb!

African Cichlids
All the reproduction processes take place in the womb for most animals, including fish, but the African Cichlids took a very different and unusual approach to this process. Basically, what this species does is that the feel lays her eggs and gobbles them up. Except she doesn’t really swallow it and lets it just hang around in her mouth. Then the male comes around, fertilizes them in her mouth, and lets it sit there.
After a week or so, they hatch, but some parents are so dedicated that they continue to carry around the whole fry for a few more weeks. During this time, they forage as much food as they can until it’s time to release the younglings. As disgusting as it sounds to carry your babies around in your mouth, mouthbrooders actually have a better shot at surviving. Being a fish egg is no fun. They can easily die from fungus, predation, or just simply get swept away. So when you put that into consideration, living in your mom’s mouth doesn’t sound so bad after all!
Leopard Slugs
Slugs might look like some of the simple creatures that emerged during the Cambrian era, but they’re actually quite advanced when it comes to mating. First of all, these sticky creatures are hermaphrodites, which means they have both female and male reproductive organs. So the weird part is that they don’t really need another partner to mate with, they can fertilize their own eggs! But in rare cases, they do find someone they like, there’s a whole other process that goes on.
First of all, the unusual couple dangle upside down from a rope of mucus that they created. And then slowly, they rotate and entangle their bodies with each other for the process to take place. Since they’re about 20 cm in length, they need gravity’s help to conceive. Once this process has taken place, the leopard slugs can lay up to 200 tiny eggs from which pale white slug babies. How cute…?
