Why No One Should Swap Seats on a Plane
You probably aren’t the only one looking to pull the ol’ switcharoo. Even if just a few passengers do it, they could throw the plane off balance! And since most aircraft are incredibly sensitive to changes in their center of gravity, it can lead to dramatic consequences.
During takeoff, pilots must know the distribution of weight on the plane to make exact calculations. If these calculations are off even the slightest, there are chances that the aircraft can crash while leaving the ground. So before nestling in a more comfortable or spacious spot, ask a cabin crew member if you're allowed to do so.

SUMMARY:
- If the calculations are off even the slightest, there are chances that the aircraft can crash while leaving the ground.
- By the way, if the airport staff load baggage incorrectly, for example, in the rear compartment instead of the front one, it can also mess with the plane's balance.
- Always secure your tray table as soon as the plane starts moving on the tarmac, and never lower it during takeoff and landing.
- Like a lowered tray table, a reclined seat can seriously slow down an evacuation since it’ll block the person sitting behind you.
- If you’re on a larger aircraft, you have higher chances of surviving a possible accident.
- Remember that sitting near an emergency exit means not only more leg room but also more responsibility. That's why only able-bodied adults can occupy such seats.
- Follow cabin crew instructions to open window shades during takeoff and landing. This way, flight attendants can see what's happening outside.
- Fly non-stop without connections if you can. An overwhelming majority of plane crashes happen during the first 3 and last 8 minutes of the flight.
- Wearing proper clothing will reduce your risks during air travel. Try to wear clothes made of natural fibers such as wool, cotton, leather, and denim.
- Prepare a "run kit" and make sure it's with you at all times. Such a kit should contain your passport, wallet, cell phone, credit cards and cash, any necessary medications, and a list of emergency contacts.
- Don't stuff heavy objects into overhead lockers. They can fall out during severe turbulence and injure you or other passengers.
- If you see some suspicious activity or strange-looking packages, immediately inform the cabin crew.
- It might be a waste of time to look for the safest seat on the plane because it probably doesn’t exist.

Yes, you shouldn't swap seats without asking cabin crew. But it does not mean the aircraft will have balance issues, a long as you move forward and back and stay in the same side of the aircraft, pilots won't have a problem correcting the balance by trimming the aircraft. (Trim is basically what elevator attitude the plane has, if it is trimmed positively the plane will have an easier time taking off, so if the weight changes in the cabin all that pilots will do is from the aircraft.)

@@oz_medias i understand but large planes commercial planes aren more tolerant of this. I worked two airlines and from my experience this is major issue in the commuter type planes. But larger planes are more tolerant of this. Also from how i see bags get tossed around in the cargo hold of b737 and a320 with no kind precision tells me it is not that serious as the video makes it to be though the weight and balance is still a big factor. I am sure airlines are not loading the aircraft to it limits and have given extra room for error
This was a very interesting and important video keep it up
Seat changes are usually only risky if you move more than several rows, and depends a lot on how heavy the aircraft is. On a small aircraft like a 15 seat seaplane, you'll often be asked to change seats to get a better balance. On larger aircraft with a high payload, an individual seat change is rarely enough to tip the balance off (partly because everything is planned to keep the CoG around the center so there's more room for inaccuracies.) Also, the whole thing is more important during take off and landing than at other points. Flight attendants will often let you change freely after take off if you want.

this is quite illogical, no airlines ask for passenger's weight. Just another illogical talk.
Pankaj Joshi they just want 🤑
Idk about you, but here our metal detectors also have a scale you stand on
Brandon Gonzales but when you walk through metal detectors how do they know which flight you are in?
It’s just the difference between an empty seat or an occupied seat. The loading is done whether or not the seat is occupied and is calculated on an average of like 75kg. If the seat is occupied and that seat will likely have 10kg of luggage nearby under the seat in front or overhead locker.
It's for safety
Thank you for this information about planes.
you can swap seats in an aircraft if it is a widebody if it is a commuter jet then you must remain in your seats for weight and balance purposes, the pilots only do their own weight and balance in small commuter jets the big aircrafts are usually done by a load planner at the airlines dispatch center.
Not sure how they “balance” the passenger weight on a plane when you can check in online and choose your own seat. They don’t ask for your height and weight before you do this. I call BS.
Dr Dermix Girl They use average for your age and gender, and they know where the weight is balanced before the calculations
Mr MHod- I get that they can calculate where the weight is balanced but how can they control where people choose to select their seats? The only thing they really have control of is how to balance baggage weight against the estimated passenger weight distribution.
the only times we have ever had to give our weight was on a helicopter flight and a small airplane with about 20 seats and then we were individually told where to sit so that it was balanced evenly.
@K Vlogs not on any plane. when we took a 20 seater from Maui to the Big Island we had to get weighed right at the check in desk.
They can calculate it by the information they have. They know which gender, how tall you are, where you come from and what your age is. For everything they could have some standardized weights and can know how the weight will be distributed in the plane but with some calculated variations of course

Thank goodness you just saved my life…
@Blue
True
True, my dad is pilot, and he knows more better than this one.
The FAA accounts for 180 lbs per seat and it is calculated into the weight and balance of the aircraft. That’s why they don’t weigh passengers. Moving seats in an airliner will NOT cause an imbalance great enough to cause any issue. If your in a small plane 4 to 6 seats it is more critical.
That make sense cuz a wing could handle wheight force as much as 10000lbs.
Yeah your right because I’ve been travelling around the world and not once have they warned you about moving around on an airplane.
Plus they load the suitcases in after to fix any off balances

Ever hear of a singer named Jane Froman? Her story was immortalized in a Susan Hayward movie from the mid-20th century. She was on a flight and changed seats with another passenger without telling anyone. While that didn't cause the crash, the passenger she switched with died and she survived, but required several surgeries to save an injured leg. Switching seats without telling the crew can, in case of an accident, delay identification of passengers who are injured or killed.

I have been studying aviation for a year. A planes center of gravity is calculated by the total weight of all the numbers of the passagers and cargo in the back. The max payload is at 55000lbs. So switching your seat wouldn't change a thing
So this helped a lot and now I know thank you
In southwest airlines, they dont have assigned seating. So do they have to count where everyone is?
I always fly Southwest - no assigned seats so you can sit where you want depending on your boarding order. When the flights aren't very full the Flight Attendants tell everyone to spread out, but never tell anyone exactly where to sit or they need to move because they are throwing the plane out of balance - giving this as a reason not to change seats is BS!
Shawn Peatrowsky They do this for weight and balance, but on larger aircraft this is not that critical. Meaning a few people in a less than optimum configuration on a Southwest 737 will not throw off the whole aircraft. That’s why they don’t ask for your weight when booking a flight. However, I once flew in a helicopter where the pilot made us sit in a certain order.
I like these videos types informative but this particular video is exaggerated little about switching seats. On planes that are larger than a commuter plane it is less of an issue and the load planners typically not loading the plane near it limits so allows some weight to be off in certain parts of the plane
@@billm47645 Yes more critical on smaller planes, commutes and puddle jumpers. I've been in groups when our weigt is asked and told what seat to take. Fuller, lager planes is less of an issue.
I am a professional engineer and understand things luke weight and force. I agree that equal weight distribution is more important the smaller the aircraft is. And if a plane is only like half full people need to spread out to distribute the weight. But this video presented as if a couple of people switching seats on nearly full large commercial airplane could throw ut out of balance and make it hard to fly. That was what I was calling BS on. I agree with you William if weight distribution was that critical on a large commercial plane they would ask you for your weight when you bought your ticket.
That's right. And on Southwest, if you fly a longer distance with one or two stops, people get off and there's do determining where the remaining people are sitting as the flight continues to its next destination. Likewise the flight attendants always tell you after you land at an intermediate stop that you can change your seat location after they do a headcount. Sometimes they will ask a few people to move to the back, but that's about it.
How does the airline know my weight. Not like they ask
They assign seats based on averages. They know where the empty seats are.
Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) state that as a method of guestimating weight and balance every human is 170 pounds
Tristan Scheffers federal aviation regulations. It’s just the name of the type of rules for us here in America
Tristan Scheffers Federal Aviation Requirements. CASA will have something very similar for weight and balance, especially as the standards are likely tied directly with the manufacturer’s POH.
Karen Combs where did you hear that? I know of no such system on a plane, plus it wouldn’t be accurate in measuring balance. Tangurple is correct, they take averages. Except it’s 190lbs per person in the summer, 195lbs in the winter.
Thanks for the reminder!
Well that information was IMPORTANT and NEW

I think it more about occupied seats vs empty. I've been on a few flights when they've asked for volunteers to move from the back to the front of the plane for this issue.

im on a plane.. just swapped. you help a lot! you can save so many lives!!!! this should be after a saftey video on a plane.
Oh dear, definitely calling bs on that one. It's not logical unless they weigh every single passenger, or demand to know your weight when booking! And what about the flights where you can choose your own seat while booking? Yeah, this isn't logical. They like you to be in your assigned seat during takeoff and landing so that it's easier to identify the bodies if there is an accident. The bit about accidents being more likely to happen on takeoff and landing is true.
just asking.... what does bs mean
