Our GSD puppy is 3 months old and his biting is atleast at a 9! He breaks the skin and bruises us. Most of his biting is when hes demanding attention, or when we are trying to handle him, and also sometimes out of frustration during training.
My puppy is 3 months old, and the biting is an 8. It's almost constant until she gets tired. Then she is sweet and cuddly. I try to redirect with toys (various levels of material). I also make deep uh-huh sound and she usually stops and moves on to something else.
6 months old. My arms look like a leopard.
6 months,wanted a wash cloth from my hand and kept biting,if i hid my hand he nipped higher up my arm,growling,so frustrstting,sprayed water on face but nothing seems to help,eveyday at same time goes crazy,
The only reason I don't give Sasha an 8 is that she almost never bites me very hard. XD A surprisingly softmouthed alligator, given she's a pit/husky. She just turned 7 weeks old as of midnight.

You are my SAVIOR today. My pup is 3 months and I was so worried I was failing him with the training. I do daily training with him but thought I was doing it all wrong when he started ramping up the biting and such. I was feeling sooo guilty and anxious that I wasn’t doing him right and was forcing him to be confined when he was being so crazy. Knowing they actually need that much sleep and that his behaviors are totally normal - took me from extremely frustrated and angry to calm. Thank you. 🙏

Gees I'm with you on that one. My hands, arms and legs are so bruised and battered. It does get so upsetting and frustrating 😒. I hope he grows out of it soon. Cocker spaniel 14 weeks old now. Some days he's great and other days it bite, bite,bite all day long😒

THANK you for this video! We've got a 9 week old pup and he LOVES to bite my parents legs and growl when we try to pry him off. I've told my parents not to scream/kick/freak out or run away (as I assume this might be interpreted as play) but he won't listen to his name when we call him, and treats don't entice him. I think he's getting disrupted sleep, from lots of people moving about the house, and going up to him to pet and play. We'll try to distract him, and leave the room to see if that helps. And more naps in his crate in a dark, quiet room.

8 week old puppy. The other night while on our bed, noticed cat food in the bowl. When I stopped him from going over to the cat food the puppy appeared to be aggravated and made an aggressive noise and snapped in the air. Sometimes when holding or picking up puppy he will wiggle and wine a bit. Kind of like telling me I don't want to be held. When he is focused shows determination to get his way.
You are right, it sounds like your puppy does not want to be held. It's important to listen to their requests and use other methods to get the puppy to move or avoid something. I truly believe I brought a fluffy crocodile home... ahahaha! Oh the biting.... Drove me nuts! But she's been a lot better now since she's gotten older and with my gentle corrections and praises... But yes it can be so frustrating! She still tries to eat everything as she's still a young puppy... but if you stay on the biting it WILL get better... I just kept stuffing her toys in her mouth when she did this the first 2 weeks we had her... She was still getting used to living with us so I didn't take it personally... Just constantly put toys in her mouth. Praised her with a good girl when she stopped biting or chose her toy... even if I put her toy in her mouth I would say good girl so she knows that is what I wanted. She didn't get it at first, but now she chooses her toys more. It's also important to make the toy fun. Just putting it in her mouth won't always be affective bc it's not fun.... it's just a toy and you aren't actively making it fun for her...
Sounds like you've got some great methods! We definitely want to give our dogs the alternative item that is safe for biting and chewing. And yes, we have to make it exciting. You can also put it in the treat or food bag to soak up some new smells, or soak it in pet-safe bone broth and freeze it!
13 weeks old and suddenly bites and he is getting aggressive. He came home at 8 weeks. We are almost 90% sure the breeder did not wean the litter as does our vet. He is teething. However, you mentioned hours of sleep . Maybe more naps . He is not getting a full 18 hours. Midnight to 7 am sleep and is potty trained. We work from home and have him out often . To play and ensure potty training stays great. Frozen toys work. We love our pup we will keep trying and watching your videos.

How is it going? I have a 10 week old lab who is doing the same thing! I’m very frustrated. My 4 yr old is afraid of her and if you try to correct her without treats, she turns around and tries to nip and growl at us. She’s a lab. And not fully vaccinated so I’m trying to train her somehow before getting professional help
Bandit is 20 weeks old and his biting is at least an 8. He never breaks the skin, but I've had a few good bruises and all of my sweaters and coats have holes in them. He bites me more than anyone else, so at l least I know he likes me? I'd love to know what I'm likely doing to encourage the biting and how to handle it in situations where I can't physically remove myself from him (like on a walk)!

Hi Thank you for your video. Should i carry a chew toy when going out for a walk? We were going out for a walk with my 3 month Amstaff mix and when running with her and praising her she just growls and bites my hand or clothes and then my bf yanks her cause it was a bit concerning. It kept happening so we went home but noises what to do I don’t want to yank her from her collar for misbehaving she’s just a baby but not sure what to do.
It sounds like she's not ready for that environment yet. Don't worry, that's normal. Young puppies need a lot of practice with leash skills in quiet areas (at home) before they are ready to walk nicely outside. Please tell your bf to stop yanking because this will only make it worse. Hi. I have a 4 month old mini golden doodle who is probably not going to be mini. Anyway we got her at 2 months and the biting keeps getting worse. She will jump up on me, lunge at me if I’m on the couch, bite my arms ,legs ,fingers ,clothes etc. giving her chew toys doesn’t help. She wants to bite me. Hi! My 2 month border collie is also crazy about biting, sometimes causing a lot pain. She'll also get really crazy and bity during training, she'll do 4/5 repetitions and then start biting like crazy again. What can I do to make her focus for a bit longer?
At 8 weeks old your puppy has a very tiny attention span. Sounds like she's saying that 4/5 repetitions is all she can handle right now. That's fine! That's a good time to end the session and try another one later in the day, after another nap. Her attention span will grow with age.

You wouldn't happen to have a baseline teething "schedule" I could check out, would you? I can take things as they come, but I'd like to let my boyfriend have some warning on what to expect. Also, our just-turned-7-week-old has the usual mouthing, but sometimes lashes out and nips us harder just after a correction, like "don't tell me what to do." Any advice on overcoming that? It seems very intentional, different from her usual mouthing. An odd juxtaposition to this is that she seems to be learning the "no" command quite nicely for everything except the mouthing, dropping what she's doing and running over to me for a treat (though the lesson never sticks very long before she's back at it...which I imagine is normal for her age.) I did discover that my boyfriend had been unintentionally overcorrecting her for the mouthing, and we think she probably felt she needed to defend herself, but now she seems to have figured out that being defiant can work and I'm not sure how to fix that now.

She's acting out of instinct and it's the human's job to teach her what to do instead. Most of the time those bursts of "defiance" are a reaction to the tone or behavior of the human. It could also be an indication that the puppy is overtired and needs a nap. I've been working with "no" as if it were a command, which it kind of is, rewarding her for stopping what she's doing when she hears it...and she's getting sit and down and such much more quickly than I'd expected, so I figure teaching it to her positively is probably workable, but I am understanding that she may be a bit too young to really get it. I'm also starting to understand that her impulse control is probably too immature. She was getting physical corrections and we are also becoming informed that this is way too early. It's hard to remember she's an absolute baby because she's already understanding so much, and is so big. I've never had a puppy under 10 weeks (and that was a golden retriever...who really didn't put his mouth on people, whereas Sasha's a carpet shark) so I am dealing with quite the learning curve. @@HowToTrainADreamDog I appreciate the answer. I've actually been working at teaching her what "no" means, and she has been responding to it quite well for anything other than the biting. It may be that she hasn't generalized it to that...but when she hears it, she usually drops what she's doing/getting into and comes to me for a reward. However, I will definitely check those out. I have since found that Will Atherton's most recent method is working for me, though it is obviously taking time. It's getting better slowly when she's not worked up. I've come to understand that she is completely overwhelmed by everything going on, and while she is learning commands quickly that doesn't mean she has the emotional maturity to handle a lot of things, such as, as you said, needing a nap, or being overhungry. Or my other dog frustrating her by having a toy he won't let her grab. X'D Thanks again!!
@@HowToTrainADreamDog I made the mistake of adopting yelping to let her know she hurt me and not correcting at all...yeah, no, she got more oppositional with _everything_, barking at, ignoring, and snipping at me where she would not have before. I have since reinstituted the corrections Will used in his most recent puppy biting video and not letting her know it hurts, along with the redirect and reward. I am earning back the respect, actually faster than I expected. Gotta be the mom, not the littermate! Everything still needs work, but while it's super-easy to forget how young her mind is because she's over ten pounds and extremely intelligent, I know it will all take time and she's only been in the world a few weeks
Our new Jack Russell puppy growls and lashes out with aggressive biting when she does not get her way (like when she wants to stay outside or not being picked up). I am concerned that she will be aggressive towards our two cats and older Pitbull once we introduce her and might lead to her getting bitten by the Pitbull or her alienating my sweet cats.
Your dog has a right to not want to be picked up. She's expressing her opinion and it's possible that earlier signals have been ignored by the humans. Humans often forget about the subtle signals of a dog saying "no". If you need her to move or come when called you'll need to work on this with training, not physically picking her up. My puppy is a 4 month old Amstaff & he is a 15/10. He attacks me out of the sudden no matter if he’s well rested, tired, playful, etc. He bites until I bleed & doesn’t react to any corrections. He literally only stops if you kneel on top of him. He’s healthy, no physical issues, he gets daily training by me & I have a dog trainer. He gets tons of love, cuddles, the best food, etc. Yet, he leashes out & attacks me. He is teething, has lost one tooth already, but his behaviour is unacceptable. Currently looking for a new trainer in my area to help with this.

So my Willow is a (6 or 7 scaling) 5 MO Golden Retriever and she does bite hands and arms during play. She's always done this and I've tried to get her to tone it down but I've been "understanding" because she's teething and still a rambunctious puppy. But she bites REALLY hard during play sometimes and I'm struggling with deciding to discourage biting play all together or find a way to stop how hard she bites. I unfortunately am at this alone so it's just me and I know she gets built up by the end of the day and I know she wants to play. She does redirect to toys and tugs but if I want to be involved she's instantly back to biting me for play. Sometimes I can't even pet her without her getting excited and wanting to play.

I’m familiar with puppies and what is pretty normal for biting or being mouthy. We have an 8 week old puppy who is sweet and playful. Sometimes he’ll suddenly get very angry, growls, lips pull up in a snarl he bits quickly, repeatedly and is clearly aggressive with it. I have no idea how to make it stop and don’t always know what triggers it.
The first thing to do is take a look at the schedule. If he's been up for more than an hour or an hour and a half, he's ready for another nap! We often see this behavior when a puppy is overtired and needs to sleep. My 14 week old dachshund puppy just bit my leg so hard and drew blood!!! I am so mad right now I feel like returning him from who I adopted him from. He won't stop biting me and my daughter and everything! It's driving me nuts!!!!
Ouch. Those landshark teeth can hurt! We know the feeling. It's important to remember that to your puppy, biting is normal and natural! They don't understand what they should and shouldn't bite yet. Puppies bite for all kinds of reasons, including if they are tired, if they want your attention, if they have pent up energy, if they have to go potty or many other reasons! It can take careful observation of the schedule and the triggers to figure out what might be contributing to the behavior. We don’t want to stop puppy biting, but we want to redirect it to the appropriate item (a chew toy, a split antler, a nylabone, etc). It can take hundreds of redirections before the dog starts to figure out what you’d like him/her to do! But with patience high and expectations low, you’ll get there. 2 weeks later, and he is getting it little by little, so I feel like it's getting easier to redirect him and teach him what is and isn't allowed to be chewed on! He's also letting me know now by running to the back door and scratching on it when he has to go outside to potty! We are getting there little by little! My little dachshund baby is so smart 😍
My 11 week old black poodle is oddly aggressive. When we first got her she was extremely shy and loving, but all she does is bite and scratch. She started doing this since last week, and it’s hard to control. I’ve tried holding her mouth shut, hitting her lightly on the noise, and yelling at her. Nothing seems to be working, and I’m not sure what I should do.
This is a common issue for 11 week old puppies who use their mouths to explore. Unfortunately those techniques you are using could be making her behavior worse. We want to each our puppies what to do instead (bite the toy, not the human!) and also manage their schedule so we prevent that unruly biting behavior (which usually means the dog is overtired). My cockatoo puppy is about 16 weeks old now and the past few days all of a sudden he has started growling a lot and biting us. Sometimes he lunges at our face but it’s only at night Time at the moment. He starts playing with his toys and then looks at you and lunges or he starts barking and does it. Is this normal puppy behaviour or do you think I should be about it
At 16 weeks old your puppy is going through a lot of changes. His mouth is probably sore, he has more energy and curiosity than before, but he's also still growing and needs a lot of sleep! We'd have to dig in deeper to this situation to understand the trigger, but check to make sure he has a lot of outlets to chew, and also that he's getting enough rest - up to 16 hours in a day!
I adopted a 2 year old stray dog in March. The next week found out she was pregnant and 3 days later she had 2 pups. One died after 15 hours so we have a Singleton. Mom had little maternal instinct and only nursed if we led her to pup and stayed with her. Around 8 weeks pup started showing aggressive behavior and not normal biting. She is 9 weeks now and yesterday broke my skin. Mom seems to bring out aggression in her too. I am worried she is going to get out of control. Bad situation i am trying to figure out.

My puppy is just about 9 months, he’s an American Cocker Spaniel and on a scale of one to 10 with his bitting is about a 7 I would say. But I also find that when he does sometimes nip he then licks you a lot more, so I tell him he’s good when he gives me kisses, because I want him to know licking is much better.

We don't recommend letting her get in the habit of gnawing on or holding your hand in her mouth. Redirect with an appropriate chew toy.
Our puppy is 10 weeks old a little Shih Tzu. She does a lot of biting very growly at times she acts like she loves us on her downtime. We have a large fenced in backyard, which we have given her free rain. Is this too much space for her. We end up playing cat and mouse to try and get her back into the house. If we disappear into the house, then she comes to the door but it’s always a game with her.and she’s eating debris from trees and leaves. We are very confused as to how much space she needs outside. She seems to be getting way too much freedom.
At that age dogs are exploring the world with their mouths so it's not safe to give her so much freedom in the backyard. If she's also not listening to you to come back in and it ends up being a game of chase, that's also not a good habit to start. We suggest that she go outside on a leash, and if she wants to explore you can use a 20 - 30 foot leash with a back clip harness. Until you've worked with her on a good recall, this can help her listen to you more when it's time to go in. My 8 week old puppy does the same thing (biting when pet). We have tried distracting her with toys (kongs filled with treats, Playology rope, etc) she plays with her toys and then comes back to bite us, we say no and she comes back with a vengeance. At this point we put her in the crate because we have assumed she is overly stimulated and she calms down in the crate. How do we get her to the point that she actually relaxes and wants to be pet?

10 week old puppy who bites HARD. I’ve had dogs nip and teeth on me in the past but this little guy is different. He will bite on hands and ankles, latch hard, and growl and thrash a bit. Is this normal given how young he is, or is there a way we can curb this aggression from the start? Thanks!!
It's pretty rare for a young puppy to have aggression but puppies can play very rough and it can be concerning. You can definitely work on this and now is the perfect time to start on the training. Having a similar issue. Growls but he does it while playing. But when I push him a bit while biting he retaliates. He is 3 months old Rottweiler. Walking shark!
I’ve got the same, sometimes he is being playful but other times it seems aggressive. Like if I want to pick him up he’ll snap onto my arm/hand/leg/foot and shake it like I’m a tug toy. 10 week old Rottie. I feel like I’m doing everything right and I’m not being aggressive with him but he’s testing my patience!
