Today I show you how I have installed many non-spring or phaser limiter required cams in every 3V I’ve done.

I did as suggested and got my cams installed in approx 3 hours, great tip Thanks!
What cams you use?
@@Thelegendking-yj4bm Detroit rockers na grind
Awesome video! I told people about your Fusion for years haha! I wish Ford would make a cool V8 sedan but these car companies aren't what they used to be. I'm very meticulous about my car and it's good to see someone else taking their time and doing it the right way.
I've listened to several videos of 3-valves with these Detroit Rocker cams and almost regret going with my Comp Cam Stage 2 XFI NSR 127200 cams that were designed for higher peak hp and forced induction. The Detroit Rockers definitely have more chop and sound better. I own a mint condition, low mileage 2006 that I've owned since brand new with Kenne Bell 2.6L blower and my Comp Cams added 34.25bhp and 29.44tq. I've added way too many mods to include here, but I've dyno'd at 500rwhp / 453.45 rwtq, (max recommended tq on a stock 3V motor) and that's plenty of power for me. I can barely keep the power to the ground as it is even with 305/40-18 NT555RII drag radials in the rear. Thanks for the video.
I love the videos man, keep it up!
Just finished installing my Detroit rocker cams in! Sounds awesome, thank you very much for all the info, 100% helped me during the install
Great to hear!
Wondering if you ever had a no start condition after installing the cams?
This is a lot easier job than I thought. I was honestly kind of terrified taking it on. I had never worked on any ohc cars just old pushrod motors (good old windsor) but using this same method I had it done in about 2 hours. Only thing I did different is I took off the intake manifold but that was mostly because I was putting on the ford racing intake manifold. Also do longtubes at the same time. The car was a completely different machine when I was done. Threw a 150 shot on it now 3 years later and 200lbs of nitrous she’s still kicking. I bought a 2019 10 speed pp1 gt last year. Plan on giving the 3v to my son when he turns 16. But we still got 4 years till then
I have 3 , haven’t had a mustang since 2000 .im thinking about getting this done
Great video! Would like to know the hp gains on your 3 upgrades after the tune
I didn’t see that you turned the crank pulley to the 1 o’clock position? Is it not necessary?
Great video!
Whats the pattern to tighten the bolts?
Wish i could have done this when i did my timing rebuild. Cams cost too damn much tho
Im looking at having to do a head gasket job on my 5.4 3v F150. Its supercharged and Id love to put the FRPP cams in it while its apart.
The lightning or Harley?
@@EastDallasKicks neither, its an FX2 with the Edelbrock Eforce kit on it, stage 2 at 10psi.
@@loganreviewsit bruh people still boost those. Would you say you got better returns then the lightning would with pulley upgrades and such?
@@EastDallasKicks From what I understand this kit was designed in conjunction with Ford to be as "factory like" as possible. That said its an Eaton blower which isn't known for making the most power. Its very stockish, even at 500hp its not a monster. It just feels like a much bigger V8. Personally if I were going to boost a 5.4 Id go with the largest whipple I could fit. They make their power down low, but the rods can only take about 500 before they bend. Im on the limit. A good tune is the saving grace.
Great vid, im about to do the job. Was wondering if that same cam will work on my 96 gt 4.6
2V and 3V have different cams. I would search some cam setups for it and see what's recommended
Did same thing with my 08 GT, only issue Iv had is the Howard rattler cams I got are just shy of a 1/3 of a inch shorter than stock cams. Cam sits fine just the phaser is pulling timing chain close to the firewall of the engine, I have maybe 2/10s of a inch clearance compared to almost a half inch with the stock cams..
Sounds like something I’d stay away from. That’s too much
@@MattSoppa Ended up being wrong side I was trying to put in, 100% my fault nothing due to your video. Thank you for response anyways.
Might have to get one of those harnesses and put him a coyote in it 😉
i had a shop tell me this was a 12 hour job i’m definitely dropping a motor and doing this myself
Dropping the engine is pointless if you’re just doing cams. I’ve obviously did it in the car.
Hey man. Good vid. Do you need a tune to daily them? Not looking for too much power. Just want the choppy sound
Yes you should
@@MattSoppa will it start and have a check engine if not tuned? I’m not too good at tuning and there’s not any good tuners around me 😔
@@Daniel_5.4 get a remote tune from Lito.
Ty for the video With a motor that has 130k, wouldn't you recommend replacing the roller rockers while you were there ?
If the rollers still roll and there’s nothing obviously wrong with them, send it
if i`m there i might as well do as much as possible for preventive measure, yes you could save more money that way,but i wouldnt take the chance of having to back in there myself when i was in there the first time.
I have a preloaded remote tune from sctflash was thinking about getting my 08 gt some ford hot rod cams, would u recommend the Detroit rocker cams with this tune or should I go somewhere and get it professionally tuned after changing the cams myself?
Get a good non canned tuned
So it needed a tune? I was wondering what the power results if stock + cam swap
Absolutely
Just wondering about this method ! Did you put the motor in time ! TDC. ? I have a set of hot rod cams to install in my 3v !
It never went out of time
What lift are you using in your garage? Looks like it would work in mine.
MaxxJaxx
What tuning software are you using? I would like to start learning how to tune
I don’t tune them directly, with 3V cars I use an SCT device and use a man named Lito to tune the car
i want to order these for my mustang, can i just install them and start driving without a tune?@@MattSoppa
@@brandonyass9631 short answer. No
lol thanks for the fast reply! whats the long answer before i order these right now ha@@MattSoppa
@@brandonyass9631get the cams and a tuner, if you run no tune you run the potential of running really rough or destroying the engine when you change something like cams.
If you were to do a 1st gen 5.0 swap to a s197 mustang. How much would you charge?
Labor would be in the 3-4000 range
great video, i’m about to install ford performance hot rod cams in my 3v and was wondering if i can use your method to install them?
Absolutely
Did you do your cams WITHOUT putting engine on TDC? Or just replaced cams without TDC? Thanks for your help.
@@user-cf1us3ds2o I just try and get the engine in position where there’s the least amount of valves trying to be opened
I did mine similar to his and have a video as well. Good luck with your install
Holy crap, there some mean spirited, obviously abused children out there... Whatever happened to just moving on, rather than talking smack.. Dude, I enjoy the content, and no, I don't own any of these cars or motors, except for my 2003 F150 4.6. Though I'd be proud to own either of the 3v mod stangs. So it's not a Coyote or a Windsor built to within an cubic inch of it's life... Still good looking, and decent performing rides.. Thanks 🙏 for sharing.. ☺️
They're driving around in their cars that mommy and daddy bought them. What do you expect? Just wait and laugh when they drive it into a crowd on the side of the road.
Are the ford racing cams able to be used with a roush m90 supercharger
Yes I’m sure many have
Do you need a tune with the cams ? And how much does it cost to get it done at a shop ?
I highly recommend a tune. Require in fact. If you’re in the phoenix area I can give you a quote. Matt.makeitmodular@gmail.com
would love to get this done on my 08 gt. how much would you charge?
Email of you’d like a formal quote. Matt.makeitmodular@gmail.com
How come you didn't show what position to put the crankshaft
Since it ended up in a position where only a few valves were starting to open (luck) didn’t think of it. That’s all that matters
If i install myself. Your saying i can't drive to the place to get it tuned after im done installing. Would like to do it myself and take to get tuned.
Get a good remote tune from Lito
I don't have a laptop computer or planning on getting one. Wouldn't I need that also besides a remote tuner to do data logs to send him. But thanks for the reply.
Why does the timing gear say" L" on it when it's on the Right side of the motor??? Mine has an " R " on the right side of the motor ( passenger side ) and " L " on the left..
It’s the same part number for both side. I’m sure R is hiding
I noticed that on my 05 just after asking, thanks for the response.
How much would you charge for my 3V?
To do NSR cams in a 3V is $500 in labor
I'd imagine there should be a "neutral rest position" for the cams to where they aren't pushing down the valve springs. But who am I kidding? I'm not camming my 3V... I'm coyote swapping it...
My dude. Let me know if you need help
boat anchor
They aren't that heavy.
This is exactly why I steer totally away from Ford products 🤷🏻♂️
Because you can change cams without draining oil or coolant? Got it.
@@MattSoppa Actually it’s because the modular Ford V8 is trash, in comparison to a LS or Hemi..
@@hbanyea ok hip hop
@@MattSoppa I gap these 4.6 3v with a 6000 lb truck so jokes on you 🤷🏻♂️
@@hbanyea I don’t mind em but I do Coyotes.
Put cams in it, be dissapointed, sell the car
Disappointed because mfs thought it was gonna boost performance more than 10HP or because the noise?
@@EastDallasKicks personally I would do this for the noise and that's it I know the 3v isn't the fastest
Gtfoh 🤣 I put a cam in this 3v I’m keeping it. You can keep your Ghost cam coyotes 😂
@@StayHydrated-wd5ic I deadass cnc ported the heads, did some massive cams (for a 3v), and did long tubes, and the fucker make 347 rwhp, so I took that out and am now godzilla swapping that same car
@@hithereperson8137tuner could be reason you didn’t make more power. With ported heads you should’ve been in 360-380 range with mods you did.
i still can't understand why you or anybody else would put up with that bullshit just for the noise. at least be smart enough to figure out on how to lower the damn idle might sound better if that is all you really want. to let you all know that's why EFI sucks ass.
Yes we’ve been using EFI for almost 40 years now, it definitely sucks.
Ill stick to my 351w base engines. F these POS mod motors
