How are you guys! Ready for some fun in the workshop or garage?
As you can see, my rear Deore derailleur doesn't look good, after a couple of days in the office (endurance, climbing workouts). If we let the dust and grime get to the pulleys, bearings and pivots, the mech will lose the shifting performance. So let's get to work!

How satisfying watching those jockey wheels get clean!
ikr!
I recently noticed how "gunky" mine were on the road bike, even after multiple washings that included application of degreaser. Will absolutely use this approach for the physical removal of that stuff. Strangely enough, the ones on my MTB are in great shape. Switched to a wax-based lube on both bikes a couple of months ago.
Oh yes
@@bullwinkle428 , squirt?
Nice to see a fellow Tractor Boy out in the wild. It was indeed satisfying to watch, unlike our performances this season..
I'm a professional mechanic and this has to be the best quick clean rear derailleur video I've seen yet that is done right with out or very little amount of cleaning solvent(s). Because nothing ruins s rear derailleur or rear hub bearings when using excessive use solvents or pressure washing.
I personally wouldn't use my pressure on anything other my path or drive. Won't use it on my car or my bike. Far too aggressive for either.
@@6ettinold bs. sealed ball-bearings and axles do just fine as long as one uses the pressure washer from 8-12 in away as it's supposed to be used :}
I've been cycling since 1983 and you just taught me something. Maybe it was me not paying attention to other videos closely enough but here it is. I've always had issues cleaning (what I now know is the) guide jockey wheel. Shift the cassette onto the biggest cog and it comes out of hiding. It also exposes the spring and pivots. Freakin brilliant. Thanks
The amount of experts on this thread is so funny 😂
New cyclist here, this video is just what I needed 🚴👍
Can’t lie that was satisfying when u took the gunk off the jockey wheels with a screw driver
There is something quite satisfying about seeing all that muck coming off so smoothly and efficently.
brilliant video, short and concise, perfect. I'm going to check the rest of your videos hopefully gather a playlist of cleaning the full bike haha
Remember to replace the towel back in the bathroom before anyone misses it :^D
The more I watch these maintenance and cleaning videos the more I want to switch to single speed.
Just changed the drive train on my Fixie, two cogs and a lock ring. Looking at this bike with 10 cogs, derailer with three moving axels, springs, three wheels... Let’s just say I’m happy with my Fixie bike just servicing it!
Don't know why this vid popped but am most grateful.Sat in a park having lunch out bike riding. The derailier was playing uo so degunked it with a nail file. Now running much more smoothly .Will give it a good going over when I get home.
Appreciated the detail and close ups. I am ashamed to say I have not treated my bikes well over the years. Never too late to start!
I like that you went for practical cleaning and lubing, rather than trying to get everything as shiny as possible...
I have been doing this for 25 years, though not as well as you. Thanks for teaching this old dog new tricks. 👍
Never even thought of the cable going back into the inner. Great tip, thanks.
Dude... I thought I kept my drivetrain clean but this is next level. wow! My frame rarely ever gets that dirty though unless it’s a fresh ride.
I appreciate the step-by-step narration. Very informative! A little maintenance saves the costs of repairs.
@SickBiker that was meticulous and satisfying to watch 🤓 thank you for the ideas to clean it up too 🤗 I'll do that to my old ass basic bike 👨🔧
I dont ride bikes but good for you you have a healthy pass time but I really happy you are taking care of your equipment so many people dont take of any thing and never bother to learn how even do basic stuff then throw it away because it broke
I got 3 minutes into this before I got to work on two of my bikes. It's the bike equivalent of squeezing spots. Cheers for the tips!
1) To remove mud and gunk from the jockey wheels, use a plastic tool (there is a good one at the back of some brushes), not a metal screwdriver. This will avoid scratching the wheels, which would attracts even more dirt. 2) Instead of putting chain oil on the pivots, just give a global spray of Teflon based lube and wipe the excess. Far more faster , Teflon will also repel water and attract less dirt than chain oil. Cheers
how to clean drivetrain in 3 minutes: video lasts 7 minutes with fast forwards and skips
how to do that
😂😂😂 it’d take me 7mins to work out which brush to use for what
😂
Yeah, very weird
@@GazRadCycling why doesn't that surprise me after reading your comment lol
Satisfying to watch, well presented and filmed. I forgot a derailleur needs this kind of attention once in a while. No wonder my shifting sucks with a new chain, but with an ok cassette and chain wheels..
This video is so amazin informative and is so calm to wach i learnd alot, and had no idea about the hear and the dirt! thank you!
Good video, I always use a screwdriver to clean the jockey wheels too. Always wondered what the on and off switch does on my Xt derailleur now I know.
I like that cleaning tool "screw driver"
Very good video and precise cleaning. Good work. I love using a small screwdriver to clean the jockey wheels it’s very satisfying seeing all the crud come off!
I placed an oil drip pan under the derailleur, sprayed the derailleur components with CRC Parts Cleaner & Degreaser Pro, used a rag to dry everything, an re-oiled all the components and the chain. Looks like new!
Video: Cleaning My Bike! Your brain at 2AM: interesting, interesting.
No oil ! No wax ! No dirty ! I love it 😻
Satisfying! I learned a new method to clean my RD now.
in 2007 when I started mtb I did after every ride clean everything. now I just clean the chain BEFORE a ride lol. But it is a very nice video and I should do this too
1:00 This is so satisfying
Great video, so many people these days seem to not understand cleaning the transmission properly.
But you do Timmy, of course. Thanks for chiming in.
Excellent tips. Especially about cleaning the cable. Thanks
very nice! thanks! when i think 3 minutes i feel much better to do it than thinking of how many brushing & lubing i need to do
was really satisfying watching you scrape the jockey wheels lol
I always hang on to everyone's old toothbrushes for jobs like these.
i use the current one, but that's just me
@@quarter_moon_and_a_guitar i brush my teeth and my cogs at the same time efficiency is key
I found very useful your videos, Thanks. I try to clean Chain and Jockey wheels after every ride, it makes a big difference in components performance and duration.
so relaxing to watch, look at that dirt coming out
laffin my head off ,,nice one
Strangely satisfying and a good "how to " video
Why haven’t you used a degreaser to clean up the chain and the cassette along with the jockey wheels? I find it to be extremely effective along with the use of brushes in removing gunk from the bike. Follow it up with a warm soap wash and then follow up with lubing the chain followed by lubing up the dérailleur
After a lot of research on YT to fix my bike's rear derailleur shifting issue I finally found the issue and solution! Couldn't find a YT video on this matter! I explain it below: 1) The most common type of housing has an inner thin wires tube and an outer plastic covering tube. Apparently after a while because of pressure the outer plastic tube jams and the inner tube wires are exposed that can get crushed by pressure on ferrels! This causes a serious metal-metal fraction between the cable and thin wires of housing, worse than any dirt or rust can do! 2) Loosen the shifter cable and release the cable at the derailleur (watch YT guides) and through all housings to free all housing parts. 3) You have to cleanly cut the exposed thin wires of housing to align it with plastic cover tube. Be careful not to block inner empty hole (where the cable passes) by crushing the wires. You need a sharp wire cutter (or a specialized tool from bike shop!) Then clean up both ends of housing and lube a bit. 4) Insert the cable in all housing parts and through the derailleur cable clamp. Since you lost some housing length, to have the same tension on the cable at a particular gear you need to pull the cable out of derailleur cable clamp a bit compared to what it was before. This needs to be fine tuned to have perfect correspondence between shifter and derailleur for all gear range (watch YT guides). Hope it helps someone.
Good video, great method, went and cleaned my old bike gears. Peace be unto you.
Most satisfying vid ever !
is it just me or it was satisfying af
ASMR for cyclist haha
Another great training video. Thanks for the great lesson. Keeps my bike out of the shop!🚴🚴
Great tip about the cable cleaning whilst in the loeest gear, thanks.
That screwdriver trick is fantastic
Yes.. although I'd use hard plastic instead of metal.
I dont even own a bike, and I feel like this was a great way to spend 7 minutes of my life
SATISFACTION Clean rear mech, shifting seamlessly, happy rider. 😊
Thank you for sharing, clearly explaining .👍
Damn... Your dirty drive train is mine when it's clean.
Criminal
Ok arrogant, that is why he is cleaning his drivetrain
wife's towel, of course :)
I’ve always just jetwashed mine but just spent 3k on a new bike this was helpful thanks 👍🏻
I find undoing the fixing screw of each jockey wheel and removing it enables you to clean it thoroughly including re lubing the bearings is easy, good video and tutorial though. 👍
A thorough 3 minute cleaning and it only took 7 minutes.
😂😂😂
😜He should have said 10 - 15 mins
It typically takes more time to explain something or demonstrate it than to just do it.
Nice! 🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼
@@guycarden8807 Except there is no time wasted in the video, he is constantly doing the cleaning things he would do anyway, there's very little where he is just talking or cleaning anything for longer than is needed. And it still includes cuts where he changes tools and FFWD of longer cleaning tasks. There is no way this can be done in 3 mins. I'm saying this as someone with a bike that does get pretty caked up and needs the occasional scraping and wiping and lubing of the mechs. 30 min would be a more realistic and still optimistic time for this.
Great job man... like a dental hygienist!
A good dental hygienist would point out the cavities, this patient need fresh teeth.
I also love to use the toothpick for a quick clean up and disposal. Love the video!
Good tip
Great video! I like using ProLink chain lube in a pinpoint dropper on the pivots and jockey wheels. I also have various brushes for cleaning. If any brushes have metal ferrules I wrap them with electrical tape so they won't scratch.
"Step 3: Apply dirt attractor paste to all critical linkages and pivots. This ensures there will be plenty to do for next week's cleaning."
So there will be another video about. Nobody ever does this kind of cleaning after riders like this guy on video
Very satisfing- I also use rounded shoelaces to clean the inside of the cassette...
Or fabric liner wom an old t-shirt...
Great product, easy to clean -worked out great !
Just did this! Thank you so much!
Oh my gosh, the amount of crud on those jockey wheels! Layer after layer come off! 😂
if you must lube your mech pivots just use PTFE spray, its much less messy and wont attract as much dirt.
This is so satisfying! 😃
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Now, please do one on my 1x12 SRAM GX and NX Derailleurs.
6:29 MAN I WAS laughing whole day
So satisfying
Solid tips and good camera work.
I can hear my bike crying, thank you for this video.
The dirt falling off is so satisfying.
I was so satisfied too. Stepped unfortunately into the dirt and moved it by my feet on the bright carpet in the living room. Imagine my satisfied wife!
In 26 years of riding mountain bikes I’ve never seen jockey wheels that gunked up. It suggests you’re over oiling your chain.
Try a Scottish winter or summer to be fair.
@@WIPEYOURLENZ or anywhere in the UK! That’s not the point though, don’t over oil it and clean it regularly.
Actually it looks more like he’s been piling a dirty drivetrain and it’s all mixing into that black gunk, I live in Scotland and your drivetrain can get like that real quick without using oil and cleaning it in the winter trust me
I really don't think you cycle fella.
It’s a geographic issue 🌼. Temperate climates like the UK or Ireland results in this happening all the time.
Excellent. Thankyou. Subscribed. Regards from NE Thailand.
You can tell it's much happier after being cleaned
I wax the chain for my gravel bike. It’s a life-saver. No wet lube means very little dirt is trapped in or stuck on drivetrain parts.
I use little tea light candles in a slow cooker.. £5, 3rd year same bag of candles 👌
Agree!! why everyone doesn't use this , I don't understand yet.
@@donavonlewis1039 theres people out there that struggle fixing a puncture, removing a chain would involve lbs in some cases 🤦🏼♂️. We need more dads in this world!😂
@Gweilo Agree with ya bud. So lets teach them the correct way and not cut corners! Let’s see a video of taking the chain off and a proper clean! And wax the chain. LOL
Have you tried the teflon type lube? Goes on wet and then dries leaving teflon dust as the lubricant. I mountain bike and have had good luck with that stuff. Never tried wax... Seems like grit would get embedded.
Over the last 35 years , I've used every chain lube out there . What works best for me is , wash with a garden hose and re-lube with a Teflon chain lube.
Very sound advice! That type of lube evaporates and the teflon dust stays to keep things smooth. Definitely cuts down on the caking of crud.
@@johnnygunz2300 Spoken like a true hammer head . Happy trails !
Excellent work, my friend!!!
very satisfying, thank you
You should have shown the before and after clean side by side comparison!
It will be nice to see a video testing products that attract the least amount of dirt. I live in the dusty desert of Arizona, were greasy lubricants have the tendency to attract dust particles. The dry bike lubricant (its liquid but dry out) with teflon that I currently used seems to reduce the buildup of dirt, but it is not a silver bullet. Thank you.
Try my tips from a mudproof drivetrain video.
In case you are wondering what is the lube he puts on - MOMUM Mic Wax. You can also use it on the chain. The rules are simple, first clean thoroughly, then apply the wax. It is not great when it comes to lubrication (e.g. chain works fine only up to 60-80km), but it keeps things clean.
A tip you can spin backwards on a ebike by putting an allenkey in 1 of the chainring bolts, also using WPL lubes wet works well and cleans very well. 😆
*in 3 minutes* proceeds to do it in 7 minutes :))
Nice video. No need for fancy brushes...just save your old toothbrushes.
I use diesel and a brush, for lubrication I use PTFE spray, works perfect and easy to clean. 🚴💨
2 wheels carry our soul! It's a very nice video, I'm an KTM electric mountain bike rider, I live in the Netherlands, I'm still waiting for my new channel. Good luck with my love.
mountain bike rider who lives in the Netherlands, interesting :D
@@bane2886 👍🏻 I’m still waiting for my new channel, thank you in advance ☺️
Me being a professional mechanic, just in pain watching this Like WTH. HOW DOES IT EVEN GET TO THAT POINT!!! no way that is just "grease"
Lmao....this is the worst.
Shut up mate... professional lol ..my arse

Excellent job.
So satisfying to look at. Give it a splash of break cleaner it will be like new.
You need to use a dry lube so that you can ride better and farther...less dirt gets picked up by the chain and part's last longer..
Is maybe suggest to your viewers to remove the chain and clean it also as there will be dirt on it, on the basis the jockey wheels are caked. Also, when lubing the pivots it’s easier to manipulate the mech without the chain rather than having to shift up and down. Could save more time like that. Good vid though.
very good video best tips i have seen for years
what chemicals or oil did you use for the final touch on the deraileur please
Just use degreaser and brush after 1minute done
Well he said this video is not for detailing but eventually it came detailed awesome.
....thats why !! Thats why !! I luv hub gears.😊😊
