Hi-Fi Rush PS5 Review + Xbox Multi-Platform Releases - The Story So Far

2024 ж. 9 Мам.

Hi-Fi Rush has arrived on PlayStation 5 and it's an excellent port of the original Xbox Series X and PC games... with slightly improved shadows. Tom Morgan reminds us of how great this game is, and examines Xbox's multi-platform record so far. From Ghostwire: Tokyo's Xbox issues to Pentiment receiving 120Hz support on PS5 first, surely Microsoft's flagship console should automatically be the best place to play its games and the first platform to receive new features? Great games get a wider audience now and that's a great thing - but Xbox needs to dot all the Is and cross all the Ts a little more carefully.

    • Yep. Yeeeeeep. Though there's one thing I'll say which is odd: there's an over abundance of coverage on any Xbox drama, like it's some sure fire way to attract viewers. Sony doesn't lack in that department with botched PC ports for instance, but it doesn't seem to reach quite the same fever pitch...

    • I think everyone who truly cared about this game is happy it came to PlayStation too, the only ones unhappy about it are those youtube channels dedicated to console elitism, whether it's an Xbox elitism, Sony one or Nintendo one, who in most cases won't even play half the games they cover. Exclusives don't work as they did in the past, these days they feel much more like limiting the audience rather than a reason to own a different console, biggest reason being just how much more expensive consoles became in the last ten years.

      @kannyboy1847@kannyboy1847Ай бұрын
  • It's probably a DirectX issue with Unreal Engine 4. That would explain the strange graphical deficiencies in HFR on Windows and Xbox. The same could be said of Ghost Wire but for Xbox specifically. PlayStation's APIs definitely seems to have less overhead, since this issue keeps showing up in games as early as Control : Ultimate Edition. Having faster hardware means nothing if the software used to issue commands to it is inefficient. Not to say that Direct3D12 is inherently inefficient but, compared to what PlayStation has (GNM and GNMX), it certainly seems less efficient in that regard. DirectX is supposed to be used across a wide range of Windows devices, whereas PlayStation's GNM/GNMX is just for PlayStation devices. I'm not an Xbox or PlayStation developer or a software engineer, so this is just speculation, but I'm inclined to believe that the Windows part of the Xbox's design is basically the issue when compared to PS5. To bring the Xbox to parity here would probably require an extensive overhaul of the development kit, and it's software. I don't see that happening. If it runs, doesn't crash and performance isn't egregious, it will ship. It's not out of laziness or carelessness, but a financial investment issue, I think. Again, not a console developer, I'm just shooting darts at the wall here.

    • In a sea of useless fanboyish comments, I thank you for making one of the only valuable comments in this entire section. And to add on your theory, I do think it's an Unreal issue. On PC as on Consoles, UE has always been very poorly threaded and very dependent on single core performance, and would you look at one of the biggest improvements quoted in UE 5.4 "improved renderer performance" which almost certainly means that CPU performance has been somewhat addressed. Indeed since the CPU has to issue the draw calls to the GPU for what is to be rendered, there are no big mysteries : if you want better render performance, you have to optimize CPU time used. Which Epic famously did not. I actually do by the way that a non insignificant amount of games running on UE have poor performance on this current generation because of that engine being so poorly optimized. With custom engines, you get things such as The Witcher 3 on Switch. With Unreal, you get PS5 games that have no choice but to upscale from 720p to 4K. And obviously FSR is then blamed when really, it's not the actual culprit here (even if that answer most certainly would not be pleasant to hear by our Nvidia lover Alex)

    • Direct X 12 Ultimate is a mess for PC and Xbox. The excuse was that these games were developed for the PS5 in mind but these former "exclusives" show that's not the case. Devs are having a hard time with Stutter Struggle on DX12 on the PC and it seems DX12 has more of an overhead on the Xbox Series consoles than whatever API the PS5 is using.

If it’s a fun game and performance is mostly the same on a standard mode, then that’s what should matter. It’s nice to see as much parity as we have now, especially considering how generations past felt so staggered going back to Gen 6/7 where Xbox versions looked the best compared to their PS counterparts. That changed with Gen 8 where PS4 looked better than Xbox. Now with Gen 9, both consoles are almost indistinguishable.

    • Mark Cerny once stated that having less CUs with higher frequencies makes it for devs a bit easier to program. Its easier to fill all the CUs with usefull tasks when there are less of them, and with higher frequency the tasks are done faster. So basicaly if a game runs better on PS5, its because the game uses the same amount of CUs on both PS5, and XBOX. The extra CUs on XBOX arent used because it requires extra time and investment to allocate tasks to then. But because PS5 has higher frequencies on CUs, it outperforms XBOX. Sony screwed up alot with with PS3, and learned from XBOX 360. Microsoft can now learn from Sony.

It doesn't help that Microsoft has made the optimization challenge two-fold in the sense that devs have to optimize the Series S and then decide if they want to optimize the Series X. Given the numerical advantage of the PS5, I can see them feeling very lackadaisical when it comes to optimizing the Series X on top of the Series S. Maybe if the Series S didn't exist, we'd see more examples of Plague Tale with a 10%+ advantage but, alas, the Series S sealed my Series X's fate😂

So games with complex simulation systems and more advanced AI struggle noticeably It has the same RAM capacity as an Xbox one, so anything that was too big for that will be too big for the series S. It’s why BG3 took so long to come to Xbox, and why the texture/asset/NPC pop-in is so bad on series S. It’s a necessary sacrifice to achieve advertised frame rate. As for if it’s held anything back, I’m not sure if any developers have thrown out features or ideas because of the technical constraints of the series S.
