Will there ever be another figure skating pair like Ekaterina "Katia" Gordeyeva and Sergey Grinkov? The two of them delivered a truly outstanding performance in the short program at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. Enjoy watching their performance in full length!

What happened to Sergey?
Sergey died of a heart attack at age 28. If I remember they were practicing on the ice n he just fell to the ground.

I can watch this wonderful couple perform for hours! I remember their gold medal performance at the 1988 Olympics, and I’ve admired them every since. Their artistry and perfect unison is unmatched by ANY pairs skaters in the history of skating! Not to mention the total devotion and love they had for each other. Sergei’s untimely death was such a tragedy and loss to Katia and all of those fans like me who loved them. Thank you Katia and Sergei for the joy your beautiful programs continue to give to us all!❤️

It was so strange to see them “only” do a throw double twist. I always loved how fast they skated, even in shows. They were true skating.
Remembered reading her book that they did learn the triple but during that time it wasn’t yet common thing.
@@lastsundaydrive it was a requirement to do the double in short programs back then. They did the triple in the long program and could do a quad but chose not to.

@@jamiejoonks Yes, I recall Katia saying somewhere that the Russian doctors measured her pulse after the quad, and it was very high. Also, at that time, the quad did not appreciably increase their marks. So, taking a of the aforementioned into account, they decided to omit it from their programs. Also, at that time, no one else was doing quads (I don't think), so everyone was rather unfamiliar and nonplussed.

Талантливых фигуристов много, Сергей был и остается абсолютно уникальным. Он - лучший парник за всю историю ФК, обладавший всем набором на 10 из 10. И это не мнение, а факт. Непревзойденное владение коньком, интеллигентный артистизм, идеальные линии, надежность в поддержках и выбросах, красивая внешность, умение при этом не лезть в паре на первый план.

Ich glaube, weil Sie Ihre wunderbare Eiskunst berührt und bestimmt auch, weil Sergej mit 28 starb. Das ist sehr sehr traurig. Ich muss auch oft weinen, wenn ich Sergej und Katja auf dem Eis sehe.

Perfection
Nobody else seems to have noticed but Sergei had a very scary moment going into his camel for the side-by-side spin combination. He almost loses his footing, is then out of sync for quite a few revolutions then miraculously regains timing on the sit spin. This pair often had timing issues on their spins, presumably on account of their height difference. They were not perfect but certainly very beautiful to watch. It was Sergei who made several minor errors in the long programme too. I think they were lucky to win.
The German and British judges seem to have spotted this
Commentators pointed it out at the time. Also M/Ds quality was not the same, and they also had mistakes that just never get pointed out because they are a lot more sloppy in general (I don’t mean that as an insult, their style just wasn’t as crisp as g/g, but they were very passionate)

To prawie 30 lat temu, ale gdyby dzisiaj wystąpili z tym programem, też mogli by wygrać nie jedno złoto. Cudowne wspomnienia o cudownej parze. Wielka szkoda, że karierę tej cudownej pary przerwała przedwczesna śmierć Sergieja. Wielki szacunek dla Katii, która pomimo bólu po stracie męża, ojca jej dziecka i partnera na lodzie, poradziła sobie z życiem bez niego.

Sergei’s lips were so pale in both performances. In 1988 they were a healthy red. It is strange that health professionals would not have noticed such a visual sign of heart disease even if most of us don’t really notice such things.
They were practically blue! Especially in their exhibition program.

Много раз пересматриваю катание этой пары,и не могу понять одного...как жена не могла не заметить того,что супруг неважно себя чувствует?И жаль мне ушедшего а мир иной Гринькова,и не верю я в то,что так любящая его Гордеева,не понимала состояние супруга...видимо,большие деньги застилают глаза,поэтому,и не уберегли такого спортсмена....Светлая Память.
