    • This skit really illustrates the difference in skill between Adam and Pete. Driver is giving everything he has to this skit and totally killing it. Meanwhile, Davidson can’t go a minute without breaking character

  • This sketch was written by Eli Mandel. It was the first sketch he submitted after being hired as a writer for SNL. He based the character on an "old man" character he used to play during improv sessions in Chicago. Interestingly, he said he thought the script was terrible, and that SNL would instantly reject it. But some of the other writers thought it was funny. Mandel said that it was ultimately Adam Driver's brilliant performance that made the sketch.

  • So Mordecai is the descendant of H.R. Pickens. But Mordecai is also the weakest in his class, sullying the Parnassus bloodline. Looks like it was H.R. Pickens who got the final revenge. Great lore.

    • You mean in this scene? Bcz you could see the pain in his eyes in the SW movies clearly. Here I think he is reading his lines from cue. His eyes are fixed off to the side rather than at the other people. So while his performance is amazingly funny I don't think he's actually putting alot of effort into it.

    • @@intheredcold9216 Yeah, if anyone doubts whether Driver emotes with his eyes, they should watch the Han/Kylo Ren scene in The Force Awakens. But I actually think he was staring off because he was trying not to break character. Others in the skit were constantly trying to stifle laughs/smiles and it's pretty hard not to laugh when others are laughing. Based off the reactions, I'm pretty sure that smashing the crow with his cane was improvised, so I think he was putting in at least some effort.

Could be similar with me (goth guy here who used to hang out with all the punk anarchists and go to seedy hole in the wall concert venues)... but I do imagine there was some truth in it. I was a lover of Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story". Never saw Atlas Shrugged, but was aware of it. May have to watch it out of curiosity now that it's been mentioned again... Oh and if you've never heard of Edward Bernays, there was a super creepy lecture he gave about the U.S. educational system. Don't want to spoil it, but worth a listen.

  • I never tire of watching this sketch. I just realised Abraham H. Parnassus says he has been an oil man for 82 years. That means, factoring in that he started at a young age but still a man, he is over 100 years old with an elementary aged child! He's a boss!

I wonder if he was backstage before he went on, felt the prop, and just thought "I could probably stab this thing with the cane".

    • His character didn't play well off Driver's. The father doesn't come off as one to be mocked as Davidson's character does. Plus, the class identifies him as the weakest in their midst, but he tries to appear strong in publicly contradicting his own father.

Meanwhile, Mordecai was just embarrassed by his presence the whole time, even insulting him for not being able to get out of bed. The class even pointed out Mordecai as being the weakest. Once Samantha said she wanted to be just like him, Abraham knew he'd found his true heir.
