The singer-songwriter Tones and I has gone from singing on the street to winning major music awards in no time, and she only continues to find more success.
The Australian musician, born Toni Watson, uploaded her song “Johnny Run Away” to the music sharing website Triple J Unearthed in February 2019, and it immediately took off. Before the day was over, she had become a celebrity, and she proved she was anything but a one-hit-wonder with her second song “Dance Monkey.”
From the time she lived in a van to her appearance on The Tonight Show, let’s take a look at the truth about Tones and I.

  • I am truly happy for her. She is most deserving of success. I do not happen to care much for her songs or voice. But I can always respect a Fighter. And she fought. Do not know why she ended up on the street but if she was kicked out or something I most certainly hope she is not supporting her family. I have seen street performers become stars and it is amazing how many all the sudden with to be your friend. And just how many parents all the sudden care. Money changes the world and not always in a good way.

  • It’s about busking in Melbourne. It’s kinda important, Byron is a holiday town, Melbourne is a big city. Drunken workers are more objectionable than holiday makers.

    • This American thinks she's awesome. Best range & cabaret voice since Amy Whinehouse, but better since there's a uniqueness in her voice & sound, and whole overall vibe. Fresh and organic. A whole vibe.

  • I think she's a terrific artist and dance monkey is a pretty catchy song, but I don't understand why she sings with what sounds like a Filipino accent. Am I the only one hearing this?

    • That’s just her having fun and not taking herself too seriously. I was determined to hate her because I hate the modern trend of weird pronunciations, but when you listen to fly away, she has great pronunciation where others use stupid nuances.

    • Also, that song is about when she’s been busking 8 hrs straight and wants to knock off, but people keep paying her to continue. She’s singing those lines in the character of the person in the audience who is demanding she keeps performing for her. She might be using that accent because it makes it sound more abrupt and demanding, kind of a cultural thing.
