97 Arctic Cat ZL 440 First Start And Ride Of The Season

Finally got around to starting up the old Arctic Cats for the first time this season. In this video we get the 1997 ZL 440 going and take it for a little test ride. The carbs and lines were all dried up but after pumping the float bowls full of gas through the vent lines, it started right up. Goes very well for an old 440 I must say!

  • hands down the best era of snowmobile imo. I love the character every machine had back then and the triples were just on another level.

  • The 97 ZL440 we had was decent. It had a good top end, but was really a dog out of the hole. Tried to clutch it differently. That didn't work out.

  • Yup: squirt fuel down breather tubes... get bowls fairly full (don't overdo it) It fires right off. and will run long enough to have fuel pump pull fuel thru. empty lines. Shocked how many people have not figured this out..Then pull there brains out!

  • Hi. Tell me if you know. What is the difference between 440 ZL and 440 Cougar? Visually nothing. But in the manual it is written the ignition advance angle of the ZL 24 and the Cougar 18 degrees. How can I tell? What angle should be ideally adjusted?

Had a arctic cat jetski. Pretty reliable so decided to go with arctic cat. Plus it was a great deal. $450 with 1900 miles!

  • They notoriously get stuck needle jets, or whatever they call that little stopper that stops fuel when floats are full. One always hangs and wont let fuel in the float, never fails. Yes, i drain the bowls before storing, and they look new whn im forced to remove carbs every winter to knock it free. Odd, on MX bikes, they're all metal, but sleds have rubber tips. ..which, ironically, is why they stick. I don't get it. Metal ones dont stick, not on storage prepped dirtbikes.. If the rubber is to reduce vibration, then why do they not use them on MX bikes, which vibrate far more? Ride safe brother
