Most of the hulk outs were done by his stunt double Manny Perry. You can see in some clips that were wide angled and his face was exposed without the green paint. Lou or Manny would wear shirts a size small and the designers would score or cut very litttle tiny tears in the fabric before the actors flexing. If you watch any of the back shots in slow motion you’ll see the cuts just before they flex and tear it apart. Same with the shoulder blowout and bicep tear shots. The pant rips were probaly the weakest of the bunch as they didn’t have a lot of options tearing through denim. So they just added slits along the seams and had Lou or Manny lift their legs out. The boots were hit or miss..some shots were well done..others his feet would just pop out of them.

Lou didn’t do all of the close ups of the rips. Kinda make sense cuz if his face wasn’t shown, any big guy could’ve done the rips.

OverlyCritical-If you can see that, then you've got sharper eyes than I do. All I can see are the clothes ripping. Too bad they didn't include Big Louie's feet busting through Banner's shoes. Speaking of shoes, after Banner Hulks out for the first time, as he turns to walk toward the woods, there are no shoes anywhere around, and the tire that the Hulk threw a distance away before turning the car over, is now on the ground beside him.

I always wondered if his feet ripped them apart before exploding out of his boots. In the cartoon show, I noticed he never wore socks with his shoes, since his ankle was always bare before his foot burst out.

The times when he was wearing socks, they showed, although that was more likely due to the fact that they were using an air bladder to swell the boots or shoes and they needed to cover it. In real life, socks are very stretchy and would still be intact for some time after his feet burst out of the boots or shoes.

@@deezy81 I guess I'm not the only who has pondered how the Hulk transformation would play out in real life. Usually I'd be lying awake or watching this late at night and I'd think about it. I also figured that the socks might survive the first few moments, but Hulk's rapidly growing feet would quickly make them into scraps of useless fabric. What's incredible is that the metamorphosis completely destroys his tough leather boots. I was always amazed on the old cartoon show when his bare feet, already having turned green in his brown loafers, would just explode out of them in an instant.Truly incredible and fantastic!

It's like, by that point in his transformation, it's actually begun feeling good to David = notice how he's flexing his biceps, like he MUST bust out of his shirt...the "Terror In Times Square" sleeve busts (and I do mean BUSTS) at 3:17 are powerful. His muscles are sooooooo huge in his shirts by that point = he couldn't wait to bust right out of his shirt!

@@jtpunk492 I like to think that David's primitive subconscious that is physically manifesting into the Hulk takes over at a point in the metamorphosis and in a sense he is relishing it. By that time, he's all feeling powerful and savage. I imagine his feet have violently burst free from their leather prisons and the feeling is indescribable. I always looked forward to the part where his feet exploded from his shoes. The cartoon show in the '80s had a montage where his shoes literally exploded, then he tore off his shirt AND a tie. I thought that was so erotic.

One of my first memories of "funny" feelings was from the 80s cartoon show when they showed Bruce's arm growing and busting out of his shirt sleeve (the non-zoom in version). The way the animation depicted the growth into the sleeve ripping was so mesmerizing, I used to play that part in slow-motion on VHS all the time.

@@jtpunk492 I think I know the part you're talking about. Is it that the one where Dr. Banner's Hulking -out standing up and it shows his arm swell up to fill the entire screen? That was so cool. There's also one where he's kneeling and his sleeve is just annihilated. The transformation sequences on that show were so well animated. My favorite one was when he was on his hands and knees. It shows the view from the back, then zooms on his sleeve ripping, then it shows his pantleg and shoe from the back as he grows. I always looked forward to seeing his shoe bursting during that one and got funny feelings too. I liked how his foot was drawn, and how the shoe quickly splits down the sides and falls off his green bare foot. And it's funny how my wife loves it, too!

They would have stunt person Manny Perry wear some shirts that were a couple of sizes too small and have him do muscle flexes and let the shirt rip and buttons burst off.. Sometimes they would make small incisions in the shirt which you can see in some Hulk Outs. There are also some Hulk Outs where you can clearly tell that the shirt is being pulled apart by people out of frame. They would also sometimes use air bladders, usually for those shoe bursts where you see that David is wearing socks to cover up the air bladder..

I remember reading a part in an interview at the time with Bill Bixby, who said that he wore on the show what he wore in real life. That way, he didn't feel like he was working. So, the cowboy shirts, jeans, and boots are what Bill wore on his off time then.

Banner always found a new set hanging on a clothes line somewhere. He would leave a $5 under the clothes line. He never lost that brown leather travel tote though! Where on earth did he get those brown boots though..must of owned 200 pair
Kind of amazing how just by flexing Lou could rip fabris apart😂😂😂 They’d get the tightest possible clothes to fit him so that it’d be easy, but still it’s quite nice
I like when the buttons burst around his chest and when he flexes his biceps making the shirt rip
Most of the hulk outs were done by his stunt double Manny Perry. You can see in some clips that were wide angled and his face was exposed without the green paint. Lou or Manny would wear shirts a size small and the designers would score or cut very litttle tiny tears in the fabric before the actors flexing. If you watch any of the back shots in slow motion you’ll see the cuts just before they flex and tear it apart. Same with the shoulder blowout and bicep tear shots. The pant rips were probaly the weakest of the bunch as they didn’t have a lot of options tearing through denim. So they just added slits along the seams and had Lou or Manny lift their legs out. The boots were hit or miss..some shots were well done..others his feet would just pop out of them.

Lou didn’t do all of the close ups of the rips. Kinda make sense cuz if his face wasn’t shown, any big guy could’ve done the rips.

I find it interesting that every time Banner rips out a pair of shoes (boots), he's not even wearing socks.
I always wondered if his feet ripped them apart before exploding out of his boots. In the cartoon show, I noticed he never wore socks with his shoes, since his ankle was always bare before his foot burst out.
The times when he was wearing socks, they showed, although that was more likely due to the fact that they were using an air bladder to swell the boots or shoes and they needed to cover it. In real life, socks are very stretchy and would still be intact for some time after his feet burst out of the boots or shoes.
@@deezy81 I guess I'm not the only who has pondered how the Hulk transformation would play out in real life. Usually I'd be lying awake or watching this late at night and I'd think about it. I also figured that the socks might survive the first few moments, but Hulk's rapidly growing feet would quickly make them into scraps of useless fabric. What's incredible is that the metamorphosis completely destroys his tough leather boots. I was always amazed on the old cartoon show when his bare feet, already having turned green in his brown loafers, would just explode out of them in an instant.Truly incredible and fantastic!

True. Most of them were probably Manny Perry (Lou's Stunt double). But who know's.

It's like, by that point in his transformation, it's actually begun feeling good to David = notice how he's flexing his biceps, like he MUST bust out of his shirt...the "Terror In Times Square" sleeve busts (and I do mean BUSTS) at 3:17 are powerful. His muscles are sooooooo huge in his shirts by that point = he couldn't wait to bust right out of his shirt!
@@jtpunk492 I like to think that David's primitive subconscious that is physically manifesting into the Hulk takes over at a point in the metamorphosis and in a sense he is relishing it. By that time, he's all feeling powerful and savage. I imagine his feet have violently burst free from their leather prisons and the feeling is indescribable. I always looked forward to the part where his feet exploded from his shoes. The cartoon show in the '80s had a montage where his shoes literally exploded, then he tore off his shirt AND a tie. I thought that was so erotic.

One of my first memories of "funny" feelings was from the 80s cartoon show when they showed Bruce's arm growing and busting out of his shirt sleeve (the non-zoom in version). The way the animation depicted the growth into the sleeve ripping was so mesmerizing, I used to play that part in slow-motion on VHS all the time.
@@jtpunk492 I think I know the part you're talking about. Is it that the one where Dr. Banner's Hulking -out standing up and it shows his arm swell up to fill the entire screen? That was so cool. There's also one where he's kneeling and his sleeve is just annihilated. The transformation sequences on that show were so well animated. My favorite one was when he was on his hands and knees. It shows the view from the back, then zooms on his sleeve ripping, then it shows his pantleg and shoe from the back as he grows. I always looked forward to seeing his shoe bursting during that one and got funny feelings too. I liked how his foot was drawn, and how the shoe quickly splits down the sides and falls off his green bare foot. And it's funny how my wife loves it, too!

Does anyone know how the clothes bursting happened during filming? Very interesting to know, because special effects didn't exist back then and it doesn't look like anything like that....unfortunately I can't find an answer to this anywhere.....Perhaps. through inflated (bursting) balloons?
They would have stunt person Manny Perry wear some shirts that were a couple of sizes too small and have him do muscle flexes and let the shirt rip and buttons burst off.. Sometimes they would make small incisions in the shirt which you can see in some Hulk Outs. There are also some Hulk Outs where you can clearly tell that the shirt is being pulled apart by people out of frame. They would also sometimes use air bladders, usually for those shoe bursts where you see that David is wearing socks to cover up the air bladder..
