  • I work in the hockey industry as a skills specialist. Out of respect for the game we always revere the past great players. And we should continue to do so. But make no mistake, and Wayne has said so himself, McDavid is the best player to ever play. This is referring to his physical/technical abilities. It’s not even close. To compare an athlete today in any sport to athletes that played 30-50 years ago is not practical. The technological advances in players equipment and training leaves too much of a gap to effectively compare. What would Mark Messier look like as a player in todays game? He’d be a better skater for sure and he was a great skater. He’d be even stronger than he already was. What would Gordie Howe be like as a player today. He wouldn’t have the space he had back when he played because he would never have gotten out of penalty box. The game is so radically different today you just cannot compare. A player like McDavid is a machine. The nutrition regime is an exact science. No hot dog and cokes before games. His macros are dialled in perfectly. Scientific eating and supplementation, players wear technology during practices and workouts that tracks performance of body systems. VO2 max in (layman terms = the measure of the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during exercise. The amount of oxygen in the blood that can be delivered to the muscles. The higher the VO2 max the lower the amount of lactic acid build-up. McDavid is off the charts. Most of that is genetic but then you add in the training he receives etc. We shouldn’t be comparing but simply enjoying and celebrating each athletes talents regardless of what team they play for. It’s only a game for us to be entertained with a bring joy to our lives. There is so much in life that is heavy and to be angry about but hockey should bring people together in friendship.
