Stainless | High Carbon Steel San Mai Damascus. I thought this would have been hard!

I recently took on the challenge of attempting a san mai stainless damascus, just to explore something new. Surprisingly, it turned out to be much easier than I initially anticipated! To maximize my chances of success, I ensured the steel surfaces were impeccably clean and diligently welded the billet along all the seams. For this project, I chose a combination of 440c and 1070 high carbon steel, and they worked together seamlessly.
As for the blade, I followed my usual geometry, with a spine thickness of 3mm and a width of 40mm. As for the handle, I relied on my trusted stack of olive, red heart, and ebony wood.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video! I sincerely hope you enjoyed it. I welcome any suggestions or comments you may have. If you found the content valuable, please consider leaving a like and sharing it with others who might find it interesting!

  • That's a lovely end result. Brilliant jump cuts with the welding / heating in the forge, too. I even appreciated the subtle one at the heat treat. The change in the oil temp caught my eye. I'm a simple guy, I guess.

  • I feel bad leaving a negative comment, but I would like to comment on the chemical knowledge required to make knives. That is... When different metals are in contact and there is moisture, a galvanic current flows and the metal with a lower ionization tendency corrodes. This is called "galvanic corrosion". The order of ionization tendency is ‘K > Ca > Na > Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Ni > Sn > Pb > Cu > Hg > Ag > Pt > Au’ Stainless is an alloy, but it is chemically It has the similar ionization tendency as copper (Cu). Therefore, although the sides will not rust, the edge will rust more easily than a knife made entirely of high carbon steel. However, if you coat the blade with oil and you use it as an ornament, there is no problem .

  • Nice work! Looks like a beautiful low maintenance everyday-work-horse chef knife! Just out of curiosity: Are the deep "imperfections" at the top edge of the blade fully intentionally or rather a compromise of material loss during grinding and asthetics? Greets from Germany

  • Pretty counter-intuitive: your typical stainless steel has a low carbon content, but 440C is quite the outlier! It has a higher carbon content than type 1070 high carbon. Picking martensitic 440C was an excellent choice. It would have been quite a bit more difficult to try and make this from 1070 high carbon and, say, austenitic 316L.

    • @@user-wj1sw7ou2z I do not have auto translations enabled, so I did not understand the meaning of your message. I was just wandering about the Arabic script itself. With such small details in it, do you need to increase your font size or you can understand it as it is by default. For example, above the character all the way right, I can hardly see two dots, but on youtube, I cannot see details of the character next to the line. ق This character when placed in a word has a circle only 3 pixels wide and it is barely visible.
