@@luelmoges the Russians were great fighters too and their army is large. Considering they also could've invaded had they known how weaken their state was due to the Civil War. Plus they won due to outflanking the Russians and being able to be inspired by Bjorns last act of scarring the Russian army by taking three arrows to the body. You can tell how afraid the Russians were.

No one depended on gods, ragnar even told them that they had no Will on him, and see, he was the greatest viking of His time

First of all, "Hárfagri" roughly translates to "beautiful hair", so both are acceptable. You could say that "Finehair" is a better translation. Secondly, there's no history books about it. There's only the Saga's, and they mention no such thing as him defeating either Ragnar or Bjørn.

"He beat Ragnar and Bjorn." LOL okay? the real Ragnar and especially Bjorn were Viking legends. Harold may have been the greatest King of all Norway but was never close to Bjorn as being the legendary Viking. The real Bjorn literally beats Harold in a 1-on-1 combat but why would Harold let that happen to him? He's scared to Bjorn hiding behind his army. So who really won? No one cares anyway as they have both passed but whenever you would bring up Bjorn's name to any of the Viking nation, they respect him even when they are enemies with him. When you have an enemy that has respect for you I think that speaks volumes. Bjorn Ironside really passed and was born a Legend to the people who reads about him.

Helmets weren’t actually that common in Viking armies because they were so expensive to make

@@tanelpaglant8501 Wrong. Helmets weren't super expensive piece of armour during those days. Chainmail was really expensive as it took a very long time to make. It's ludicrous that no one is wearing a helmet in this battle.

Ragnar never cared for that. At first he just wanted land for his people to live better in. On his way to execution tho His goals changed to just mess with everyone so they all fight after he dies “how the little piggies will grunt how they hear how the old boar suffered” even floki comments about this once the infighting first started

thats because in real life shield maidens were FAR rarer than the show portrays. and then they werent all hot supermodels, they probably looked like female butch truckers..

@@robarans4866 Oh I know only too well my friend. Shieldmaidens were rare even amongst the Northmen. My belief is many women buried with weapons are just being buried with family heirlooms of significance, especially if marriage recognised a division of property and these were inherited paternally. But yeah. Women didn't fight. Some did, but broadly, women didn't fight. If they did there wouldn't be many people left at the end of any war.

Modern day "concerns" applied to historical stories, thereby making them ahistorical for the sake of a wider audience.

If so probably only a few of upper class familys. me personally I doubt there were shieldmaidens in real life because even a strong women is weaker then most men so they would not stand a chance and of course it was a patriarchal society which is totaly wrong portrayed in this series so men would have had something to say against their beautiful women who bore their children going off to be hacked into pieces... I you look closely you can actually see how lagertha torvi and so on are very weak in their movements. they act like they can´t even bear the weight of the sword and shield . they would stand no chance at all in a real battle even against untrained men who are just stronger, they would hammer their shields into pieces.

shieldwall battles stopped season 3 if I am correct I guess back then the mainstream audience kicked in and they thought well crazy chaotic one on one battle looks cooler to them than more static shield wall fighting

Yeah fuck it, no one fought battles like this but it makes for better TV i guess. It always bothers me how there are barely any spears being used and no formations, they literally just run at each other and 1 v 1. Could you imagine the casualties if battles were actually fought like this? Casualties even back then were not that high because often a battle could be decided before it got to that point. People don't like to die for obvious reasons.

@@Britishwolf89 i disagree, shieldwall scene can be made into a very engaging scene, it is a grueling tactic of push and pull. At one time in the book they even have to clear the battlefield off the dead bodies because of how much is piling and it messes with the cohesion. Hollywood is just too lazy to simulate those

A lot of people watching this wouldn't and it's easier for them to tell a story by having a hollywood style battle where no one wears helmets so you can clearly see who they are and the characters can find each other on the field and fight. I think it has a lot to do with what 1AKN96 said about the mainstream audience because they had no problems showing shield walls in the first 2 seasons when the show was more niche and meant for people like you and i that like the history.

So they where constantly at civil war it doesn't matter Civil War means a war between Citizens of the same country.

Lol. A battle like this never happened. What you get is a line of men probing each other and when your line got broken you go home. Casualty in medival time were small ln most case 10-15 procent or less would be dead. So they would not mistake echother because they fought in formatio .

Helmets and armour were not a common thing. They were really expensive and difficult to make, it take a lot of time. And nost vikings prefered to be light for faster moves, so they don't use it often.

@@luciaa.1112 all the historical primary source depictions of norsemen literally portray them ALL in rows and rows of helmets, some not in chainmail, but packed tightly in shieldwalls. I know that so many people dearly wish that vikings were svelte acrobatic dancey legolas-style fighters.. but that just simply isn't historically accurate. you'd forgo a helmet if you happened to not have it with you when a deadly tavern fight breaks out... but that's about it.

@@sokrateslh5473 Tell me then the truth! Who are the vikings? And this show is not historically accurate: too dark, too colorless, too chatoic, too messy, too dirty. The northern people were basically not barbaric (they were good traders and explorers). The costumes are bad (too much leather, etc.). Many inaccurate armours, helmets (like burgonet; burgonet in the 8th century?!?!; that helmet is a 16th to 17th century type helmet...), and weapons.

You don’t use archers in a charge, it’s a surefire way to get your people killed accidentally.

@@TheRastil During raiding parties most Vikings would just take axes. Only the rich would have swords. It was rare for them to travel with spears or even archers. So this is fine for me they weren’t expecting a full blown army to attack them.

W. L. Orodor Calaerchon the Vikings had the skladabig or the shield wall and it was very important for there culture and today there are many poems glorifying the the shield wall but this series has the dumbest battles

Viking shield walls were described by monks as a Roman Testudo. Basically, they did use formations, the show simply doesn’t portray them

Viking lands terrain was harsh I think because of there Climate so it was hard to farm crops.

u dont need to visually identify ur enemy, real battle was fought in formation facing each other in a line. If for some reason the enemy was behind you that's mean u probably lost the battle. There was no standarize uniform at the time, ppl were wearing what they could afford... so alot of diverse clothing and armor.... And they should have a fuck ton of spear too

Good luck being able to tell who’s who, in a civil war where everyone already has the same style and wears the same clothes and weapons, with helmets on.

@Omar E And every Spartan Phalanx is the exact same. Phalanx is one specific strict formation. The fact that the only formation and mail tactic Spartans use make them very predictable and there for easy to counter and work around after some battles.

@Omar E The Romans were using Shieldwall more then Phalanx. And yea if you ignore archers Spartans will still not win. Why would they? Vikings got shields, spears better swords and axes aswelll. And they would shieldwall. Saying the Spartan Phalanx would kill them is bullshit. It would be useless as soon as the Vikings made their shieldwall.

@Omar E Phalanx is great but its not good ageinst an enemy force were nearly all of the fighters got shields and spears themselfs. Its good ageinst enemoes that got little to No shields and less spear.
