Dette er en film om et bilde jeg malte for flere år siden. Det var meningen at jeg skulle legge på musikk men det ble det aldri noe av - så nå legger jeg den ut uten musikk - bare med romlydene fra arbeidet.
***
This film shows the making of the oil painting called: "The other scream" (oil on canvas), by Tor-Arne Moen. It was painted in March/April 2015 and measures 200x300 cm. The model is Jorunn Sørensen, aka "Lady J".
***
The film was made by the artist himself, and is an "artist in studio" production showing the process of a large oil painting.
The painting depicts a lady dressed in red and red patent stilettos surrounded by what seems like junk, but also animals out of their natural habitat, like fish, a zebra, a lions back seen from above, and two dogs copulating behind her back. The woman is sitting down on the ground, stabbing herself with a fork in the thigh, probably the reason for the gesture of a scream caused by pain.
Although Moen has claimed that "the motif is just an excuse to paint", his paintings leaves the spectator with space to interpret, and are often highly imaginative and with stories to tell.
***
Tor-Arne Moen (1966) is a Norwegian painter, printmaker and author. He lives and works in Notodden (Telemark), Norway. He was educated at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts (1988-94).
The artist is recognizable by his high-powered figurative technique with heavily painted surfaces consisting of coarse and thick brushstrokes made with varying brush widths, in layer upon layer. He uses a mix of oil-paint and egg-oil tempera, an old technique based on an emulsifying binder. Emulsion is a mixture of two substances which initially cannot be mixed, in this case oil and water. The egg is added as the emulsifier, which allows oil and water to mix. The word tempera refers to the actual painting technique and was used by the masters since Medieval times. While the tempera is often applied in thin layers, Moen uses it with oil-paint, and in generous amounts, in order to get the creamy texture, and set the brushstrokes in relief to the canvas.
Moen had his breakthrough with a series of paintings for Hamsun’s collected works in the early 90s and continued with a series of expressively painted motorcycles. Throughout the last 25 years he has worked through a wide range of different approaches to the medium and has gone through most classical, figurative disciplines, with motifs such as portraits, landscapes, urban landscapes, burlesque and imaginative, more or less surreal constellations between animals and human figure. In short, most of what he has found visually interesting.
Moen usually works in series over a topic that can occupy him for several years, before changing his theme and style, seeking new angles into his painterly excavations.
For two periods, from 2004 to 2012 and from 2017 onwards, he has worked with a nostalgic approach to the painting based on old black and white family-album photographs as motive basis and support for the eye. Here, the viewer immediately recognizes the photographic reference to a certain time and a certain type of photography, while experiencing the painterly addition of coats and colors in bold, often expressionist brushstrokes. «In front of his painting», an art critic once said, - «I often get the urge to press my nose against its surface to smell it, and maybe even taste it».
The broad-brushed realism and oily, almost juicy surfaces becomes an important source of distance from the photographic art.
Even though the references and the narrative in these paintings have a retrospective character, the spectator is forced to realize that the images are made in our present time, and seen with the eyes, -and nostalgia of our time.
Tor-Arne Moen is represented by many renowned galleries all over Norway and by RJD Gallery in the USA. His works are acquired by art collectors both nationally and internationally.

  • Entitled 'The Other Screamed ' As the featured artist is Norwegian I've translated: This is a film about a picture I painted several years ago. I was supposed to add music, but it never came to fruition - so now I'm posting it without music - just with the room sounds from the work.

  • You have got my attention… many years ago (about 65 or so) I tried to get a job at city’s cinema as a painter for movies advertisement. The director was told me to paint a clip from that movie. He give me all supplies and start timing my work . I didn’t get the job and was very upset about my failure. Now watching this man work I understand what that director was expecting from me …!😊

  • Fabulous to watch you painting. I was quite surprised to see you go straight into the painting with such a heavily loaded brush. A certain bravery to that way of working. This heavy impasto working reminds me (in some small ways) of the work by Lucien Freud, Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff, Celia Paul, Jenny Saville and followers. Cheers for sharing this, great to watch. "Indiscipline" by King Crimson (Lyrics by Adrian Belew. Music By R.Fripp/A.Belew/B.Bruford/T.Levin I do remember one thing. It took hours and hours but.. by the time I was done with it, I was so involved, I didn't know what to think. I carried it around with me for days and days.. playing little games like not looking at it for a whole day and then.. looking at it. to see if I still liked it. I did. I repeat myself when under stress. I repeat myself when under stress. I repeat myself when under stress. I repeat myself when under stress. I repeat.. The more I look at it, the more I like it. I do think it's good. The fact is.. no matter how closely I study it, no matter how I take it apart, no matter how I break it down, It remains consistent. I wish you were here to see it. I LIKE IT! ' “Indiscipline” was heavily inspired by Adrian Belew’s then-wife, Martha Belew, and her thought process while painting. While King Crimson was on tour, she sent Adrian a letter about a strange painting she had made, and this inspired the lyrics and their delivery.' 'The structure of the song returns to a style more similar to their work on 'Red' (by King Crimson, before A.Belew joined the band) with a Polymetric 15/8 guitar line over a 4/4 drum pattern.' - from genius[dot]com Lyrics website

  • As a painter I appriciate his craft. The application, the subjects and the results, wonderful pieces. I however could never adopt this style myself as I would be forced to blend... I paint pretty smooth, this guy has more paint dried on the pallet and in his bin than I have in my stock cupboard. The films are great to watch... ❤

  • Thank you for this generous view into your studio and witnessing you in action, in the zone. The clarity with which you work is awe inspiring, all the way from how you go about stretching your canvas to sketch concept, then paint the whole thing.. was that in one day? I've watched your videos over several years, and you just get better and better, can't imagine where you will take us to. (I thought this already 8 years ago.. :) There's a consistency of large sumptuous paintings about paint and at same time bold and poignant comments about life. You are a brilliant artist. Whoever was behind the camera did a fantastic job, to get right into that paint, bravo!! Thanks again.

  • Thank you for sharing your process. That is an incredible amount of money for materials that is put into the production of your painting.Perhaps someone can explain to me the process of gallery selling art in your country. Here in America an artist must sell out an entire show in order to make enough money to paint for another year.A usual show is 20 paintings. more than half usually sell. That money from sales more than half goes to the Gallery and what remains has to go to materials and support of the artist. There are no government subsidies .How is the system where you are?

  • Холст держат ребра подрамника, а не скобы и поэтому холст лучше крепить к задней плоскости подрамника. У многих привычка прибивать холст сбоку подрамника осталась ещё с института, когда будучи студентами экономили холст и нарезали его в обрез.

    • Translated: The canvas holds the ribs of the subframe, not the brackets, and therefore the canvas is better attached to the back of the subframe. In many people, the habit of nailing the canvas to the side of the stretcher remained even from the institute, when, as students, they saved the canvas and cut it into strips.

Then you can add stretchers, canvas, brushes and other tools & paraphernalia, transport, models, heating, rent, accountant, travel for references, and a whole lot more. Last but not least; Time spent. 40 years of experience and practice 🤗
