Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

    • I lived and worked in Japan in the 90s, and it was then that I first saw Sanada-san's acting. He quickly became one of my favorite actors in Japan. Since then, I've been excited to watch his career growing in Japan and overseas. This new project is a great achievement for him. Congratulations to Sanada-san and the entire team working with him to bring the novel, Shogun, to life.

  • Sanada-san dedication and hard work did give me an inspiration to work harder and be kind to others. ❤ They did all their best to put all attention to details. I love taking my time to look at it and appreciate every tiny details. Its fun! 😍 May Shogun win all the awards! 😤👏✨

  • This is what dedication looks like. I think Sanada would want this series to be as authentic as possible, therefore having a more hands on deck approach is crucial, to ensure a more accurate portrayal of Japan.

  • Truly the Mifune Toshiro of this age. He had big Waraji to fill and he spilled out of them. What a performance. When the series was first announced and the trailers published, I was skeptical and thought it might go visuals over performance. I couldn't have been more wrong. I loved that this series put a lot more emphasis on the story of the Japanese characters and offered a better overview of the overall political situation in Japan than the 1980 series did.

  • Incredible show. Hiroyui Sanada is a living legend. And here in the U.S. he was discovered by working with another legend, Tom Cruise, in the Last Samurai, which was another fantastic performance by Sanada. And the actors he selected for Shogun are second to none. Top notch!!!

  • He is one of the greatest. Whenever there is a movie with him, I have to see it, just watched last Samurai these days again. It doesn‘t matter if he plays the good or bad guy, he is the prototype character you think of a Japanese man. Deepest respect 👌

  • Let’s say that Hiro Sanada is the engine (not the anjin 😉) of this series… The first two episodes of this new series had me glued to the screen, wanting to see more. I am glad Hiro Sanada can share his obviously wide experience for the good of the show, I think he enjoyes it too. In every movie he plays he attracts the eyes of spectators like a magnet. All this said, let’s talk about those lips too… ah, those lips, those eyes, that presence…

  • This show is 10 stars out of 10 through and through, and I cannot imagine it would have reached this level withou Sanada's active ivolvement. I trust what I see on screen because I know he is a producer as well as a scene stealing actor. He better get Emmy nominations as both or I will raise hell. But also, Tadanobu Asano is so freaking fantastic as Kashigi Yabushige! I get so happy every time he is in a scene. Favourite character - after Torunaga.

  • Sidenote: Tadanobu Asano and Fumi Nikaido are very humble and deferential in this interview, yet their screen time acting has already shown they are pretty much on the way of being at the level of Sanada's skills (compared to since Nikaido wasn't really given much in Vivant). This cast is really impressive.
