Lana Del Rey - A&W - Old Guy Reaction

Lana Del Rey sings this incredible song A&W. Wow, I thought it was Root Beer at first until I heard the words and put 2&2 together. I realized that this was really a sad song. The thing I am unsure of is whether this song is about Lana personally or if she is singing in the 3rd person. I pray that it is in 3rd person. If it isn't, I am genuinely nervous about her well-being. As amazing as this song is, I really heard it as a depressing song. A cry out in some way. I hope I am way off. But, as an old guy, I have seen a lot of travesty in my time with depressed musicians.
Incredible song!

  • There's something about her... What all the famous people say about her being someone from another planet, or the fact her exe's never forget about her, all the magazines are in love with her now. The way she treat her fans. She a whole generation, so quick and just being herself. I love her!

  • i think its about her but she recently mentioned that shes "very very happy" during a speech, so im guessing it was a long time ago and she has healed from all the trauma and is in a better place, shes also been sober for a long time now. youll def learn more about lana in her latest album since its so personal!! excited to see that !!

  • The first half of the song is definitely about the loss of innocence, she mentions SA and the “look at my face the length of my hair the shape of my body” and “do you think anyone would believe I didn’t ask for it” bc if a woman looks a certain way she will be blamed for making the man want her even ifs she’s a minor so she’s saying she no longer cares about all that and will look however she likes … idk abt the second half

  • Definitely understand your concern and mention of other artists' demise. Lana has struggled with depression, addiction, and more than she lets be known to the public. She actually references that idea in some songs and expresses that she hopes she doesn't suffer the same fate but also that she's determined not to with the side of her that has a love and excitement for life. 2013 Lana was forward about wanting to die and feeling stuck, but feeling like she just keeps on going. Now she says shes finally happy, and I think thats why her lyrics are more vulnerable and less, sort of hopelessly superficial at times. They weren't to her, or to others who struggle, cause they spoke for themselves along with the whole production but I think it left some people feeling like she was glamorizing depression and serious trauma just to do it. Personally, those songs speak volumes and it's clear to me that they're not fabricated - she was just making art by giving her truth and bearing her soul. Once she grew and gained more positivity in herself and in life itself, she's been able to reflect like this song shows. The lyrics are direct and wordy, and poetic, but its clear that she's secure and stable rather than chaotic, unstable, and unable to dive into those raw places without having a mental break down. I'd love to hear some unfiltered and raw lyrics from her younger years when she was struggling. Glad she's doing well now though and gave me the opportunity to write a poor and completely subjective opinion on her life LOL

  • Listen to the new album, it is very intense. I believe that it is her therapy, sing, write and express herself through her music, a healing process. All the issues that she had with her family l, but now it is over. Many of the tracks I can’t see playing on the radio. Because it is very sad, dense and depressing album. However, her voice and her talent are much bigger and stronger then that. Pure talent. She just got engaged, I think and I hope that the things will get better for Lana.

  • The first half is about loss of innocence also Lana frequently mentions her problems with her mom (wildflower wildfire) The second half is her just not caring anymore and just accepting herself She’s talking about how she’s invisible to this person and then she’s just accepting that she’s free to do whatever and if he wants her he can find her in the club

  • Love seeing you jam out to this song 😂❤ so good Edit: posted this before finishing the video. It’s touching to hear your concern for Lana’s wellbeing. I obviously don’t know her personally but based on recent appearances and interviews she seems happy and in a better place. But yes, her songs are VERY raw and autobiographical. She’s gone thru some shit for sure. If you listen to songs like Kintsugi or Fingertips you’ll get an even deeper understanding of her past. Truly heartbreaking stuff.

  • I think when she tells a story with her music and everything she’s been through, and when we get concerned, because it can be concerning, it is her let out. Her venting. Her art. Her tragedy is beauty in our eyes but only because most of us can relate. Which is sad in its own way, because there are so many of us who can relate….

  • If you check out some old unreleased songs or her stuff before when she was Lizzy Grant, she tells a story, whether from her own experiences or from observation, but they depict a character that is in pretty dark situations and reckless mindsets. They're both fun, artistic, and quite concerning haha. This song feels like reminiscing to me and being thoughtful and present vs. the wild, concerning, sad yet fun and "tough" persona she used to have.

  • Please, do Fingertips, Kitsugi, The Grants and Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father. They are masterpiece, with very deep mensages, storytell and amazing voice. Bdw, love all your reactions!! Just saw the entire video. Yes, it's about her and she do have a sad past.. To put you in context for the next songs of the album: She had alcohol addiction at 14, was send to rehab, and then her mother didn't let her come back home and send her to live with a family in Spain. She was able to come back at 18, travel many USA cities to learn to sing and wrote some of the most amazing songs. She also used to go on drugs. She lived in a trailer park and had many wrong relationships.. On adult age, her relations ended sadly, and this song is about one of her last boyfriends, a Tulsa cop, they were together for a while, ended up and came back, and then she turned out he was engaged with another woman (a singer looking like a sidepiece at 33, puts the shower to call to me and sneaks out the back door to talk to me). She always say that she's telling us her story, we just have to listen carefully and pay attention to the lirycs, because it's all there, she's telling the truth trough her music.

  • my second time listening while reading lyrics. it completely changed meanings. It brought me to tears. Women are made to feel like things are our fault that really is pushed on to us. We are made to feel like whores. It’s a sad reality. She’s saying look at me my hair, my face , shape of my body. You’re asking for unwanted attention by men that think you want that attention. And being a side piece in your 30s , no men looking at you for long term serious relationship, just using you. And of course not being believed for being SA. It’s all so relatable and I cried like a baby and still cry every time. Only 3 songs do that to me. this one , ride and heroin.

  • This song is definitely a reflection of her past and patterns in relationships, I love the story telling, but I also figure that theres some dramatic and ecaggerated elements in parts just to paint a story. That's not to say I think that its not traumatic. If anything, she's been giving us a peak at her struggles and sad events through the years, since she began. I think this song just paints a clear picture and expresses things directly vs. snippets of trauma or vague lyrics.
