After going hands-on with the new content in SMT V: Vengeance, the dark and twisted RPG is getting even sicker.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance adds a whole lot more than just quality-of-life improvements and a few gameplay additions. It's one thing to hear Atlus boast about how much it has changed SMT V for the new Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC re-release, but having now played about two hours of a preview demo that focused on the new content, we've seen how Vengeance is building towards something much larger than the original game.

Absolutely, in many ways the original version certainly was lacking. It's sad that they even admitted to this in the Vengeance video. I mean the difference between smt 5, and Persona 5 or even persona 4/golden and P5 royal, is that those base games were already good by themselves. I felt like SMT 5 was all right for the most part, but it didn't answer those things such as terrorism, unemployment, and the current state of this world. The developers clearly wanted to talk about that, but the OG game never did that. I honestly don't know if I'm going to pick Vengeance up.
The gameplay in vanilla was amazing. What dragged the game down was its narrative and writing. That being said Dazai's transformation in vanilla is peak comedy.

This footage so clearly is from any other platform than Switch and it's unreal how gorgeous it looks, really shows you how much the Switch held it down, though funny how the official trailers for Vengeance mostly seem to be Switch footage as most of it has not looked this freaking good.

60 fps, darker story, characters now have major roles and are more involved, new demons, skills, and side quests? This might replace my favorite game of all time: Persona 5
It already has for me, SMT games offer way more of a challenge and exploration aspect. Persona 5 Royal was so braindead and easy.
@@ssj4rit To me, it’s moreso about how compelling the story and characters are. Thats why I play Persona. The gameplay can be amazing, but if the story and characters are nonexistent, that seriously holds it back. That was the one thing SMTV was missing. So if SMTVV addresses these problems, it’ll be on the same level as Persona for me.

Got the switch version on sale 6 months ago. Really looking forward to this on the PS5. The original is great but leaves a lot to be desired in the performance department. This looks promising. Feels like I can still enjoy the original till this drops with all the extra content which seems significant. Also feels like they’re finally getting all the content they’ve wanted to actually put in from the beginning. Even if the plots have changed since original development

Bought it not too long ago for $20. Easily the best turn based jrpg i could remember. Yeah story was not existent but everything was pretty much chef's kiss. Getting it on steam for mods and future tweaks

@@aarojpoll nah base Persona 5 was polished and complete, Royal was still a huge improvement though. Also Strange Journey Redux is actually worse than the original.
They were not accustomed to Unreal Engine 5, hence their vision for the game was never fully realized, until now. They now have an understanding of the engine and can utilize them to the fullest.

I felt a little burned by the og smt V. Story was extremely lack luster where there would be a significant event once every 10 hours if you actually explored that area. I loved Smt IV and I would have preferred that format of story telling instead. Smt V got heavily discounted after a couple months so I’ll probably wait this time and get it on sale in the future probably

I am hyped about this game waaaaay more than about Shadow Of The Erdtree... :) Hopefully, gamers won't overlook Vengence cuz the release window is almost the same. It looks beautiful, sounds amazing, gameplay mechanics look on point. If Atlus released a triple combo games pack soon including - SMT IV, SMT IV Apocalypse, and SMT Strange Journey Redux HD.

I'm not upset that I played the original game before this. The announcement of this game actually pushed me to finish it. Since I already bought the game back in 2021, this feels like a great excuse to double dip on PS5 and experience it in a fresh way.
I am doing that I am in last area at 70 almost 71 in level so I beat it and get the extra reward on the switch
It’s good that you can still follow the original path if you choose. I ‘ll probably replay that path first to appreciate it with better graphics and generate. Then play the new path.

I'm having trouble deciding if I want to play the original route to see what's different or the new route to see what's REALLY different...
I haven't played the original version since I don't own a switch but I'm torn on whether or not to play the new route over the old one.
From what I hear, they didn't change anything in the original route, outside of the quality of life stuff.

The original soundtrack was 5 cds. The new Vengeance soundtrack adds 4 more cds. So it must be a huge expansion since it's just a bit short of doubling the amount of music.

You get to choose to play the original story at the start of the game. To be honest you should get this version as it comes with all of the previous dlc as well.

It's the same game, but with a new route. Granted they expanded the "base" game. Just wait since it will come with all the old DLC's you will have a better version.
There's no reason to buy the original right now, unless there's a new feature you really don't like, but i doubt it. Vengeance has both the original story with improvements and all the original game's dlc + the new story, so you should definitely wait

SMTV has the best battle of all the SMT franchise (Yes, better than the super easy P5R). It just lacked history and character to be a GOTY. Now it will finnaly be the game it was meant to be. I can't wait to play with Alice, Idun and Cleopatra again. And the new demons looks quite amazing too.
I think SMT IV Apocalypse had better combat than SMT V, mainly due to better balance, better boss fights, and Smirk (Apocalypse version) > Magatsuhi Skills. SMT V is on second place for me.

This is considerably better than the original, you might as well just buy it. Besides, you can play the original story in Vengeance when you start a new game

Question Did they fix the level scaling bs? I really disliked it. I liked the part where enemies scaled to your level for when you accidently go to ham with grinding overleveling, but I hated it when you were scaled further down when you were underleveled.
The dark side of Persona type games where the combat is nearly all....along with having to take out your friends when they turn! Oh...and a nasty Omega level opponent called the Demi fiend...

how different is smt from the persona games?
SMT doesn’t have the calander system or social links. Their stories often show interpretations of the war between the agents of Law and Chaos with humans of Tokyo thrown in the middle. You still get monster collecting and demon fusion while the majority of gameplay is turn based RPG combat and dungeon crawling. Lastly combat uses the Press Turn system, which allows you to extend your number of turns in combat by striking weakness and lowering enemy turns by nullifying attacks with proper defenses. Most titles have decisions that affect which ending you get based on who you side with and your actions taken. SMT V originally was lacking in this area so here’s hoping Vengeance has more moments of siding with certain characters to follow new routes.

And even though it's another Atlus "definitive" re-release, it still comes with Day 1 DLC & expansion pass... Everyone rightfully blows up on EA & Ubisoft for these things, but Sega & their studios are just as guilty. Only difference is we like their games more 😅

PC. The game is probably gonna be Deck Verified which means if u have a Steam Deck you can play it whenever you want thanks to it being portable

PC, especially if you have Steam Deck. Not only it will be run in 60 FPS, but also in higher quality. Plus mods support as a bonus. There is no point to buy Switch version if Steam Deck / ROG Ally exist, unless you are Japanese.

Definitely not progress. You do get a bonus depending on clear data alongside being able to carry over up to 3 demons from your compendium, but you likely need the new Switch version too. There’s nothing too amazing.

Why not both? Well. DLC is just 12h+- while SMTV can go for 70h and not see everything. And if you do multiple routes will take a long time. I personally forgot about the DLC since SMTV was announced. Both are amazing. So I will save the DLC for VERY LATER when I have nothing new to play.

After putting in 100+ hours in the Original Persona 5 never cared enough to pick up Royal. I am definitely picking up Vengeance for PS5, though. I bought a Switch just to play the original and I enjoyed every minute of it. Can't wait to play this game again much better graphics and an actual story.
I just hope that the real world city will be more important. it was quite bland. I would like to do something in the city and then it will impact the post apocalyptic world

I felt kinda disappointed with the original smt v. The story felt bland, and the limitations of the switch couldn't do the graphics and animations justice. If i get this game, I'll go in with a blank mindset as if i plyed it for the first time and compare my reactions

No, this game is more like SMT IV now, while original game was basically worse clone of Nocturne. Demon Hunts in Vengeance reminds me Loyality System from Devil Summoner series (giving presents to demons for bonuses).

I hope they fix that annoying difficulty spike where you suddenly become way underleveled. Grinding should come naturally as you fight enemies when you go from point A to point B. You level up with the game. A game should never halt your progress and force you to farm enemies in the same location when you were already previously keeping up just fine with the enemies. It's lazy padding and completely kills the game's pacing.

The school stuff barely comes into it though. In fact in the original smt5, there wasnt that much story at all I'd say it was 90% combat.
