Great review. Glad to see it! I like the interior of the 1-series most, but the frontgrill is so ugly. The fuel economy is so bad. I think the Golf is the best option, based on it's fuel economy and lower price. If I would be leasing then I would choose the A-Class. I say this with pain in my heart because I'm a BMW fanboy.

Mercedes did a great job with the A Class. There's an article where they discuss exactly how they took the criticism of the old one and then specifically went about improving it. They actually listened to the owners and the public. The best thing Mercedes did as well however was to replace the COMAND system with MBUX. It's well ahead.

I am missing a more everyday experience of the cars, think Mat should have driven them longer time. In order to save a little money Golf and too many other cars have saved away the really nice push and rotary buttons to change temperature and fan speed. In most older cars you still have these buttons and it much easier and safer to operate: even in my old Swift I can keep my eyes on the road and operate the climate inside without looking on a screen. I can see Audi and Mercedes has kept a separate section just for this: good. Driving in the dark Golf hasn't even lit up the temperature sliders: really bad!
Remember whenever Matt holds a stick he is probably going to expose a car.

5:02 THANK YOU! You are the first reviewer who noticed that Audi's interior is a mess. Because as much as I love the new exterior design, I just detest the interior. PS. Golf in the UK appears to be very expensive, here in Poland you'd need to pick 1.5l engine and let a bit loose with the options for the Golf to catch the very base Audi/BMW/Merc when it comes to the price. And those very base premiums are often quite basic and you have to pay for things you never expected at this price point (base BMW 1 has steel wheels, halogen headlamps and no cruise control).
Fully agree with you Matt, you are always interpreting my feelings 😊😊

I have the new 1 series, had the old one before. Both have the standard suspension and the new one is noticeably better. More comfort, more sportiness. The new one is quieter, more efficient although it has the same engine. But the steering was way better in the old one. I can't seem to shake this weird throttle impact when going out of a corner although I thought the "new" DSC system ported from the i3 would help with that. Overall a great daily and I got it even cheaper than the old one, wouldn't wanna change for the Golf, A3 or A Class. Personally I like the BMW's design the most.
I also agree with u, the old one used to have that sensation of a light car when u pressed the acceletaror and the brake, but of course ,at the same time good horsepower. The proof that some Cars like the new Golf can be faster that the serie 1 ,using the same engines is because its heavier, as Matt saif the new serie 1 feels heavy when u drive it.
BMW 1 > A-class > A3 =Golf. Depends where you live. In Australia A-class is way too expensive and less option included in basic package. BMW 1 has increased price by $1000, but still very generous options provided and interior is the best in this class. New A3 not released in Aussie market, but Audi Australia expected a decent price increase and same for 8th Golf. Golf is actually cheap car with cheap material so it's kind of out-of-league here.
Test drove all of these plus a Leon FR DSG My thoughts are: Interior - 1 series M sport (by a mile) Golf Style A class AMG (looks good but so tacky up close)) A3 S Line Leon FR Driving - 1 Series Leon A3 A Class Golf Exterior - (so subjective) A Class 1 Series Golf A3 Leon I obviously ordered the 1 series. Finally a review that everyone hear will like because the cars relate to 99% of the people. But firstly well done to all four for producing such good cars. All four will do well for their owners and as Matt said it’ll be down on looks and people’s practically. The golf will sell more, it’s looks are weird but it does everything else really well. The bmw has stepped its game up and defo as a drivers car it’s a good choice. The a class though is a winner as it does tick a lot of boxes. A3 looses as it doesn’t offer much more than a golf but still a very good option. But you can’t say a person is wrong for choosing either car. Watching from Germany 😉... Thanks for this informative video. Also a good choice to compare exactly those four compact class cars. Concerning the design I'd go for the Mercedes A Class or the Audi A3. Both look great. The VW Golf is a very solid car, but unspectacular. Very much disappointing is the front design of the BMW 1 series in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, BMW is a great car manufacturer in general, but the new frontal optics of the 1 series aren't appealing to me at all. The BMW management should have some serious talk with their designers about the new 1 series. Already because of the optics I wouldn't buy the BMW. Sportyness of all cars very much depends on the selected motor and all of the manufacturers offer a wide variety of engines (Audi and VW share the same engine variety of course). Also in general I wouldn't say that f.e. the VW Golf is the least sporty of those 4 compact class cars, after all you can go for the Golf GTI. Concerning space, well if you want lots of space in your car, a compact class most likely isn't the best choice for you anyway. Differences in economy are just nuances, so for me it's a neglectable category, too. In my opinion it's a close race for the 1st place between the Mercedes A Class and the Audi A3, mainly because of the design. If it has to be a choice between Mercedes and Audi, I' d pick the Mercedes, because of the better view from the driver's seat. The window of the A class is larger. 3rd place goes to the Golf and 4th to BMW unfortunately. The interior of the BMW might be nice, but still the outerior frontal design is a disgrace. BMW can and should do better...
I’ll admit, I laughed when he made the rear console go “ahhh” in the A Class😂😂😂

The only thing thats down on the A class is the bulky seats. Is not a race car. Those headrests take so much of the view for the rear passenger and when you reverse. Good review Matt as always.

Glad to see you've finally done a review that is actually going to be useful to potential customers, rather than drag racing Lamborghinis.
I first really disliked the exterior of the Golf. But I have sort of warmed up to it. The front is still pretty dodgy from certain angels, but it looks better in person (and is HEAVILY wheels dependent). In general I think for the price that I pay on my lease it is by far the best overall package. Even compared to other cars like the CEED and Megane. Maybe the car you had Mat, didn't have the adaptive suspension? I think not, looking at the blank on the dashboard. I have a Golf with that setup and in Sport Mode it has insane levels of grip, it stays really flat and actually steers pretty sharply. I haven't had understeer even once in this car. Went to the Spanish Pyrenean and I could take corners way quicker than I ever could in my 2019 Corolla from last year.
I must coment! You are right man, Golf doesnt have adaptive suspension. Im watched every single video review of Golf. And every single one is impressed with suspension setup when ist equiped with adaptive one, even mat when is tested it for first time it was impressed. So just to resume, u cant get better in hatch segment than you can in Golf. It was and it is and would be forever be king of segment. The look, the technology, all in one package, and then you have little smaler price. So my pickup is Golf all the time. Once again it would kick ass every opponet in this segment. And if you consider GTD, GTI, R, then every single of this look boring compared to Golf. GTD king of diesel hot hatches, GTI and R kiling it with look, and completly setup. S3 is aways step down compared to R. A3 generaly is not good as in previous generation. Golf kick his ass in this one really!
