'They're not hot potatoes!' Should Ireland be sending asylum seekers back to the UK? | LBC debate

2024 ж. 28 Сәу.

As Ireland considers sending asylum seekers back to the UK, Nick Ferrari hears from these callers on their assessment of the situation.
01:43 - Nick Ferrari agrees with caller Andrew's evaluation, where he points out the 'irony and hypocrisy' of Ireland considering this.
02:55 - Caller Rudy also believes that Ireland 'want to have their cake and eat it too' in wanting to do this after staying in the EU.
02:59 - Caller Chris asks: 'can we just talk about these people as human beings, rather than hot potatoes being passed around?'

  • View from Ireland- What demographic transformations? There is no democratic transformations! There is a population of 6 to 7 million... we have 600,000 immigrants both legal or otherwise. Hardly a demographic transformation, especially as most immigrants living here successfully integrate into Irish culture and life. Please stop projecting your issues and fears onto us! As for cherry picking, the Irish government recognised the danger to the peace in NI if a border was installed. I live in Dublin, I lived during the Troubles... how dare he be so dismissive of peace on my island from his cozy home in the heart of England! And the presenter, for shame! This is not "rightly pointing out the hypocrisy" but trying to justify a backlash of Brexit, which we did not need, want, or vote for but are getting the ill effects of. Ireland can say you have to take people back as the CTA states it applies to Irish citizens, not illegal immigrants that arrived in your country. And What-about-ism is not helpful and is the last resort of a lost argument Ferrari! Desperate people do desperate things. Simple solution,set up asylum processing centres in France, as the French have offered repeatedly! Let them be processed there to go to the UK. The Irish government does that at our embassies, hence no small boats arriving on the Irish south coast. Maybe solve the issue rather than blame everyone else for it.

  • Unbelievable, the smugness shown by Ferrari and his callers. 'Ironic' because Ireland wanted an open border????? The reimposition of a hard border would have been a disaster for these islands and would certainly have undone all the enormous work to achieve peace by both Ireland and the UK. A hard border was non-negotiable, ffs!! It was your Brexit nonsense that almost derailed peace in Ireland. This schadenfreude is only because the Brexiteers felt thwarted by Irelands' absolute right to look after its national interest with regard to the border.

    • The open border is not the issue. The Common Travel Area is the issue and if the UK wants to bin that, 300k UK passport holders will have to leave Ireland and about 200k Irish will have to leave Britain. They also do not understand that the open border allows the Irish Gov to put illegals on a bus to the first citizens advice centre in Belfast and then its the UK';s problem again.

      @bogbay@bogbay16 күн бұрын
    • @bogbay I may be mistaken here, but with the Common Travel Area, aren't passports still checked at airports and seaports in the Republic? However, there are no checks at the NI border, which would make the border much more porous than crossing the Irish Sea to Dublin.

  • This incredibly ignorant of facts. Whatever about taking immigrants in Ireland or sending them back, that has nothing to do with 'nationalists wanting free and open borders'. That is specifically an issue for the nationalist voting 1998 to have no border on the island. No one in the Republic voted for that, it wasn't up to us. Not our vote. Irish and UK citizens have residency rights in both and that goes back a long way. And since Brexit the traditional flow has reversed. And the number of applications by Brits for Irish passports has been incredible. So clear up your poor arguments.

  • Ireland will figure out a solution to this illegal migration from the UK issue . But it will take time. For those Brexit folk, who are enjoying the irony of the open border being exploited like this by non UK citizens, in this case refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria etc., all failed states, it's unfortunate, it is causing tension in IRL, but it will force Dublin to be creative while complying with the international treaties it has signed up to. The bigger irony here is many of these refugees probably never even heard of IRL before they landed in Britain. In their minds, the destination was Great Britain, the mother country of the Empire. The majority, not all of course, come from countries which were part of the Empire at one point. No Algerians, Tunisians, or Francophone Africans. They head to France.

  • I love how you are calling out the irish position as hypocritical as the open boarder both south and north is a consequence of the British mess and handling of the creation of Northern Ireland. There is also a difference in terms of allowing transportation by boat from Britain to Ireland. Passport control still exists at ports. So its the British government turning a blind eye and allowing travel into Ireland rather than processing the immigrants and assesing their claims. The UK then throwing their arms up when called on their bs. You can say x and y about France and what they do. All this achieves is isolating the UK further and shows them as a bad faith actor and partner. Deal with your French problem rather than moving the problem onto a friend who may not exactly want to be friendly if you are treating them poorly.
