Talk’s Ian Collins is joined by journalist at Conservative Home, Harry Phibbs, to discuss Keir Starmer’s plans to stop the boats.
The Labour leader has pledged to use new counter-terrorism powers to tackle people smuggling gangs bringing migrants across the Channel.
Harry says the plans are “not realistic”, adding that “people-smugglers will continue.”
Ian and Harry also discuss the day’s other political stories, including Dominic Cummings' plans for a new political party to ‘replace the Tories’.

Starmer probably hasnt even talked to all the leaders in Europe that will be needed for this poor plan. Just turn the boats around it really is that simple !
What are people Not getting in France, Germany and all the other countries they travel through before then risking their lives crossing the channel? If you take away that and offer the same support as all the other countries, I'm sure the boats will reduce. Consequently the gangs will disperse with the lack of desire to get here. Targeting the gangs is pointless when they know there's a constant demand to get here, in my opinion.

The problem is that the Conservatives have failed totally to stop the boats. They could and should have turned the boats back and deposited all of them back on the French beaches they came from. That would have worked and Starmer would not be able to reverse that policy, had the Conservatives done that.
Labour's plan sounds much better than the Tories Rawanda plan.

Harry Phibbs the Local Government Editor of Conservative Home, journalist and former councillor in Hammersmith and Fulham... or Sir Keir Starmer KCB, KC, leader of his Majesty's opposition, barrister, former Director of Public Prosecutions, former Shadow Secretary of State and former Shadow Minister for immigration? Who's likely to have more experience and knowledge of the law? Who's probably spent months in committees researching and fact finding the reasons people become migrants and finding ways of stopping that legally? And who's got his face on the telly for a nice little wedge?

Starmer is 100% right ! we need to ensure the processing system is the "Gold Standard" of systems then get these claims sorted, and deport those not passing and make sure those allowed to stay to get proper paid, tax paying jobs within months or again face deportation. We have to recognise a humans right to move across the world - but it has to be legal to secure a countries borders. 2. An army of border police woking internationally with other forces across the globe tracking down and eliminating trafficking gangs. Like drug dealers - take away the illegal means - make them legal and you take away the dealers ! theres no incentive for them to operate ! but you cant do any of this alone. it requires international cooperation. Global warming and water shortages will create huge population shifts in the future, let alone wars and other crisis - so we must prepare now ! the investment must be made now, the processes must be in place and tightened now !
