🔴 *Even though I have been in a few slums before in different areas of the world, this was one of those days that blew my mind.* It was humbling to be able to humanise this often feared neighbourhood if not for you guys watching at home but for myself. I hope you enjoy this video and if you want to contribute to the food and education of the children living here and give them a brighter future, then please consider supporting Barbara's project here: www.ilsorrisodeimieibimbi.org/support-us/?lang=en Like I mentioned in the video, Barbara is one of those people who shines so bright for good, dedicating her entire life to helping others who are less fortunate. When you said 'hives of life' that really resonated with me. Fascinating country and City. Thank you for the content as always.
Nick, thanks for showing Brazil to the world in such a different, and good perspective. I'm brazilian and went to Rio many times, but as you now know, coming to a favela is not that easy. So it was like through you I got to know a bit more about my own country and a wonderful city. Thanks and welcome to brazilian hospitality.
I'm a canadian who spend a lot of time in Brazil and Im so happy to see you showing the world the good side of it. Cant wait to go back.
Whats next on your list bro!?
"Children can't study if they are hungry" Those words really hit home just how much Barbara's help and compassion is needed
That's a big problem - unsupervised children with no meals or heartbreakingly enough parents without the money for food.
Yea she is what the world needs MORE of

@@IndigoTraveller Cordiality is the word to explain brazilian spirit, according to sociologists and historians that studied our culture. But this wonderful people live under the rule of a very selfish elite. Besides, brazilian law is crazy: millions of rules that aren't enforced, so it's hard for those who try to respect the law, and it's easy for those who break it.
Who does not do it is not really brazilian hahahahaha
"Make yourself at home" is like mandatory in Brasil 😂. From North to South, West to East, almost everyone will say that, love our spirit, our people deserve more than that quality of life.
You really should try integrating more local music in you’re montages rather than generic travel vlogger stuff. Would really elevate the immersion. Love the series , best of luck

I’d love to visit
Something I found very strange at first was the juxtaposition of Rocinha on the slope with some of the most expensive apartments in Rio right in front of you. It's like a slap in the face, but I'm a working class idiot here in Canada and see the same thing here, although different due to our economy. I really, really miss Brasil.

I helped design an aqua park (aprox $60,000 construction cost) but the mayor demanded some iffy things which my cousin rejected, so he was denied the necessary paperwork to actually start building it, or I might've lived there helping him run the park. He built a vacation house instead but even his Brazilian wife comes back to the Netherlands, where my cousin and I are from.

As a brazilian who lives in a total different part of the country (Gramado town), thank you for demystifying life in the favela. We can all see now how many good people live in those places.
When in Brazil I mixed with the poor and the rich. I absolutely adored the poor, they were honest, true loving people. The people who I really struggled with were the rich.their arrogance, their way of life and racism shocked me. Guess we call it in the UK new money.
The funny thing to me is, as an American, if I visited Brazil or really any other place, the LAST thing I'd do is go " Hey can somebody take me to the slums?!" ... the first thing I'd ask someone is "Hey bro, where do all the hot chics hang out ?? Thanks!" Lol.

When I was in Rio I entered two favelas. The first one with a Brazilian friend to hike up ‘Dois Irmões’. It was super chill, we took a mototaxi up the hill through the favela. The second one I entered alone, thinking that I already know how it works. This time I also wanted to hike up the hill the favela was built on. In retrospective this obviously wasn’t such a good idea. Even the locals, e.g. my mototaxi driver asked me wth am I doing here. He didn’t even know were I wanted to go lol. Nevertheless, he took me up the hill. Were I got off there was a women who my driver asked something. The women too didn’t know the path I was looking for to hike up either. And she also told me that I am crazy entering the favela alone, it’s dangerous. But, instead of telling me to immediately leave the favela she even showed me around a little bit and I enjoyed beautiful views of Rio. So, all in all it probably was not the best idea to enter the favela without a local but therefore got to experience their incredible hospitality and I felt that they genuinely cared for my safety.
I'm just glad you didn't get hurt. Rio's slums are really different from one another, specially regarding safety and entertainment. There are so many different criminal groups dominating different parts of the city and they treat people and tourists very differently. But all in all it's nice you got to enjoy nice views and good hospitality

I think they meant that if somebody steals something inside the favela the robber is going to get his hands cut, he said there are some laws
The problem is who 'enforce' these laws. They have the death penalty and tribunals of crime. They don't get lawyers and the judges are drug traffickers. They criticize the legal system and then they create the most unfair legal system in the world. Many innocent children are sentenced to death in these kangaroo courts. The hypocrisy is suffocating:(

Great video. I lived in that area right next to Rocinha and Vidigal for 10 years. Nearly all of the people who worked for more well off families as housekeepers, cooks, nannies and drivers, lived in either Rocinha or Vidigal. The same for the workers in supermarkets or hair/nail salons, restaurant workers, drivers, barraca stands at the beach, in the “nice” areas, but they live in the favelas. To live in Rio is extremely expensive. And they have their own families to support. They work hard.

I was in Rio in 1986.. it was amazing, even got a tour of the favalas. My parents took me as a young boy
13:03 Hits home a bit for me. I've been living somewhere more dangerous for the last 3 years. Not as bad as Brazil probably, it's in America, but it's a big city with it's problems. Sometimes things happen and you see things and what are you going to do? The best policy is to not get involved, pretend you never saw it, report it when you feel safe later maybe but what can you do? It's better to keep walking and just hope you don't catch their attention. People think we don't care or we aren't sweating it, but we know better than anyone the danger is very real and that's why we keep our heads low. I try to just stay out of trouble altogether, I know where the bad spots are, but they spill over from time to time. Worst part is when they find out you live somewhere they think you might be a criminal too, like these people in Brazil. Good video and stay safe everybody.

I love your videos, what u'r doing man. Glad to be one of your supporters. Stay safe and share us more knowledge about the world, and people.
Just can’t thank you enough for this realistic and sometimes heavy view. What shines the most everywhere are the kaleidoscope of welcoming loving people.
Dude, u did on hell of a job with this one. I don't know how often I got the chills watching it. Really touching stuff on so many levels. Thank u.
Thank you for this videos! Even though I'm Brazilian, I don't get to travel around my own country so often, so your videos are actually allowing me to know parts of my own country! Keep going with the great work!
That is a great honour! Thank you!
The one thing I really liked about Brasil when I was actually vacationing (before I lived there) was the fact that there were no 'resorts' catering to North American tourists. It's actually a good thing for Brasil that North America thinks it's too violent. Keeps away the rifraff, spoiled idiots, and those who will do nothing but complain about the lack of english spoken. It took me 4 months to become conversationally fluent, and I found it pretty easy. Com certeza, eu amar meu segunda pais.
This was a beautiful video. Great people, good words, kind heart and all smiles.
