2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro & Trailhunter Quick Review
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter (US$62,900 starting in the US, CAD$82,950) is a brand new trim for the Tacoma lineup, and comes with the 326 horsepower, 465 lb ft hybrid i-FORCE MAX engine. With a focus on overlanding, the Trailhunter is equipped with forged monotube shocks from Old Man Emu, a disconnectable front stabilizer bar, 33 inch tires and an intake relocated to the passenger’s A-pillar. But how is it to drive? And how does it compete with its stiff competition in the mid-size truck category? Thomas is excited to find out! We hope you enjoy the episode. SUBSCRIBE!

"I'm Thomas, and where's James? I'll tell you: he's being held as collateral by Toyota while I drive more of their vehicles." 😆
😂
You win lol
After breaking the land cruiser, James as collateral makes sense!
Perfect comment 😂
IYKYK...lol
sometimes I swear these 'extra throttle house' videos are main channel quality...
Well this channel is just for "quick shoot" production, its just not as narrative as the main channel
@@rador3573 moreso referring to other car review channels 🤐
This one definitely gives that vibe
I enjoy this format more than something like the Miata review that just went up TBH, feels like they rehash the points too much in that one. Both are still better than a lot of productions but I think the Miata one was just a bit weaker than previous full lengths. The funny part is I'm not in the market for either car (probably like a lot of viewers), they're just entertaining.
That's because TH & JG simply exude quality. Their off-the-cuff approach is never try-hard or youtuber-y, it's two down to earth knowledgeable hosts that enjoy what they do and care about their listeners wallets as well as time spent watching 🤙
These guys could review a tandem bicycle and I’d watch it through 30 mins straight
I pray they do something like this as a special video or for next April 1st.
"James! Why aren't you pedaling?" "I thought this was the single motor version."
@@TheWarehamsteror perhaps a dual motor version of it.
and they would say it has amazing features and stuff it cannot do. Like talking about these for "Baja" driving.. this is not baja driving.. Take this to baja AT BAJA SPEEDS and those struts wont last 10 miles. Nor would the suspension bushings, ect.
"Thanks for wa-" 😂 Love the subtle (?) reminders that this is EXTRA Throttle House. Perfection is not allowed.
Seems like "Perfection doesnt exist" in ETH.😂
That australian accent was perfect
Honestly man was just shocked when he hit that
Aussie here - yeah... I have to admit it wasn't bad. And you don't get that sort of admission out of an Aussie very often.
James also nailed those Australian accents as well.
I remember “save the V8s” now it’s “save the 6 cylinders” 😭😭
He’s comparing it to twin turbo V6s, not naturally-aspirated ones. NA V6s are boring AF.
@@alexsmba you ain’t wrong
Maybe I’m an old man emu myself, but I’m still saving my V8.
It used to be, its not a v8, its not a truck.
@@Dlust88 well that rules out this Freightliner I’m looking at getting.
The “Where’s James” never gets old
Seems like "Where's James" is legendary there bro.😂
I have to say this is gotta be one of the most honest reviews I have watched in a long while. Thank you, sir.
Agreed , you start to realize how skewed to favor the manufacturers so many other KZheadrs are
I will say that without having driven the competition, I drove the last years TRD hard on moutain trails in the Pacific North East and it ate up everything like a champ. I loved it to be honest.
Is James being held hostage by Toyota so that Thomas doesn't wreck the Tacomas?
😂
The comment about underbody protection was fantastic, laughing out loud! 😂
And also simply bibilical out there.😂
Old Man Emu is no joke - I own an FJ Cruiser and had OME suspension kit installed, the upgrade is amazing!
My parents' 1999 LC has OME suspension on it and it's remarkable. Firm and almost European on-road, but surprisingly smooth and compliant off-road. Superb stuff.
Yup. Swapped out my garbage Bilsteins (front shocks and spring) for OME shocks and springs October of last year. Could not be happier.
I have full suspension from old man for 10 year now in my jku
You guys make everyone else in this space look like children, you touch on all the key points, the camera work isn't just someone holding a camera to capture audio. You show what should or needs to be shown. There's some real thought and effort behind your videos and I appreciate it. Keep it up. Cheers.
My same thought!
$80-90k (CAD) for a small (even big) p/u truck is insane. People should not forget that in Canada you pay an extra 12-13% in taxes (Alberta only GST of 5%). These should not cost more than $50k all in. Then on top of it you also pay $2,000-3,000 per year for gas. But it does look cool.
So move to a place that doesn't tax you to death.
The only way to get ahead of the inflation and tax game is to own a business and/or invest (i.e. real estate). For say a vehicle, it then becomes a depreciating asset and a top line expense (along with gas, etc.) off setting business taxes vs an expensive, personal depreciating liability.
Yeah totally agree. Don't forget we also get a dollar that's 70% value compared to US dollars, adding at least 30% to the price compared to US.
Coundn't agree more! $90k for a mid size is going to be a complete miss for Toyota. Hell, we cant get a short bed for less than $62k without the hybrid which is insane...
I'm gonna do the "back in my day" bullshit that us older guys are known for, but back in 2013 I bought a brand new Tacoma TRD Sport for $36,600 (tax included). I can't fathom spending more than double that now, for a small pickup.
I appreciate the honesty of the review especially since you were at a Toyota event. The pricing on the new Tacoma lineup, not just these models, seems too high even in this world of crazy pricing. Glad Toyota offers more than one bed size.
Thomas video editing: "So yeah, and thanks for wa..." Even if it wasn't planned, it was excellent!
And also very surprising actually.😂
8:57 Don't you Mean the Lane Cruiser... 😂
Now you have to review the Colorado ZR2 for the full comparison
ZR2
ZR2 is just better. Better motor, better suspension, better pizza, Papa Johns.
The fact the KZhead algorithm is throwing ads for Nissan Frontiers during this video for me is hilarious.
Nissan Frontiers if i remember also considered to be rival car to the TACOMA TRD PRO.
They killed it with the design and dealers are killing these with markups 😢
I’m surprised anyone is willing to pay a markup on these. They’re already overpriced at MSRP
@@JacesOwnWorld You can say that about virtually every car that's been given markups since 2020.
simple, don't pay over msrp. there are dealerships out there that don't mark up you just have to expand your search to nationwide
But the problem is there is always not so bright thinking people who pays the dealer markups
And now there is solid competition. ZR2 is near fully loaded at @ $53K, Ranger Raptor at $57K. I configured a modest TRD Off Road and it wasn’t much cheaper in price.
The new Tacoma, without the Earth-mover chin spoiler, looks pretty good! The one you reviewed a few months back, with said goatee, not so much...
"so we'll see how it'll handle big hits" some foreshadowing there, I see 😭😂😂 good one Thomas
This was a really good video. Seriously, nice compliment to your "main" body of work.
Sounds to me like Thomas really wants a Ranger Raptor.
That’s what I got from this video too
Raptor is a far better truck TBH
Great job on the video Thomas! Thanks for making it.
Best review I've seen for this truck.
This is one of your best quick takes on a car. Congrats.
Extra Throttle House, I can't get enough of your content, so I subscribed!
They both look great
Man I wished the tuned the hybrid more toward MPG than power. Especially since a large majority of mid size truck drivers will never need that much torque but they definitely need the MPG
Agreed and since the power still doesn’t come close to the target (Ranger Raptor)… why not offer us the suspension but with mileage, capability and longevity being top-of-mind.
it is the world we live in now, but holy cow I miss when TRD Pro tacoma was like 50k, not 64k (usd) geejus
They not going back down, so I’m buying one
Average car is around 50k (usd) now.
@@spaceoutmisfit1738 Why would you buy this instead of a Ranger Raptor?
@@PeakDecline TRD Pro/Trail Hunter may be easier to get and possibly less of a mark up than the Raptors tend to demand by dealerships!
@@BryBurger My experience is the opposite. Toyota dealers are the worst about mark up and you can't do a custom order.
Thomas, you and James really entertaining viewers like me. I love how you guys are funny while talking about cars. I’m sure a lot of people feel the same way.
Toyota: you get James back when you bring this truck back unscathed 🤣
thanks for upl
Back in 2006 I bought my Tacoma TRD off Road. 30k affordable for what I was making. Now I'm making more than 2 1/2 times what I use to make and Can't afford one. As much as I love it, Gotta get a Nissan
It's amazing there is so little room in the back of this despite it being gigantic.
Great analysis, Toyotas have always been known for adventures especially when they get older
Welp, this vid just made me love and appreciate my gen3 taco that much more. Seems I'm not missing much over my heavily modded steed other than some mpgs. Stoked to run it up to 100k+ and beyond!
I love the back seats. If only there was an insta post with 90% back seat pictures 😢
Love those seats.
That looks sick!
Another amazing quick review.
Best car reviews, hands down.
Personally I’d like a land cruiser trailhunter just because the built in air compressor is nice, and being real I’d stick a set of old man emu shocks on it anyways. Just nice from the factory. I have them on my tundra they are great.
Yay Harrison ❤ goat status achieved bro
These trucks are dope af. Love Toyota Tacoma
You actually covered everything
Thank you, Toyota! I love my NEW Tacoma TRD Pro!
Unfortunately, I live in ontario, so it was already stolen before I went to the dealer to order one.
I live in Brampton where we order 2 at a time so there is a replacement ready when the 1st one is stolen
No kidding! I’m in Alberta and they’re being stolen here as well but nothing like Ontario! Our Lexus RX350 insurance went up by $1,000 per year and the insurance company said it was largely due to the thefts in Ontario.
Sophisticated design execution
Those red seats are awesome.
YESSSS BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
great review, i had contemplated on buying my first Toyota with a Tacoma as i wanted to get a midsize truck going from years of a full size. i too liked the look of the trail hunter. the pricing was a bit over the top. As a Ford man, i ended up getting the Ranger Raptor and so far could not be more happy.
Currently looking to get either a new 6th gen Runner or Land Cruiser. Can’t wait to see the review on the runner
Best looking truck in the market today. If only it had a MHEV V6.
Yup I’m buying this equip with that seat to have my groceries delivered to my house from my local grocery store.
4:45 Trailhunter's takin' bong hits, dude. 🤘😁🍀
Can't wait to shop used ones at slightly better prices.
the turbo noise😍
I agree Trail Hunter is the better truck 6 foot bed speaks for itself . TFL dropped a 30 minute video. Can you tell me the same thing in 10 minutes? That’s great work!
Looks sickk
Been waiting for a review on these and this confirms it. Going with the Colorado Zr2. 64k is absurd.
Those BILSTEIN (ARB) shocks tho 😍
The 2024 TACOMA TRD PRO handles very brilliantly. 10/10 car!😊
I need a Taco 6 speed manual "Poor Man's Edition" review on Extra Taco House (or Taco House if you are feeling generous).
I feel Toyota knocked it out of the park with design and interior … so much better than the tundra. Great review Thomas.
It looks like a smaller Tundra. They look more similar than ever before. Kind of a weird statement to make in my opinion.
@@Wallstreetavarice the Tacoma front end looks so much better than the Tundra. That is right, your opinion is different than mine… shocking
@@Wallstreetavariceagreed. They look nearly identical.
I thought this was a Tundra when I saw the thumbnail lol
@@rcktmn haha, not me
I just saw the new Taco sitting next to the previous gen (I think the owner just got the new one to replace the previous). In a single color, the new one looks really big and I think its not as good -looking. But in the two-tone Stormtrooper guise, the black panels slim and tuck the body shape into something much more lean and purposeful. It almost sculpts it into a Pre-Runner looking body if you only see the white. Clever trick that is, and I think they should all come that way.
i do believe the land cruiser still has an open diff front and rear, the torsion center diff only applies power front to rear. all the vehicles would use TCS to control wheel spin but the 4wd trucks should have a locker making them superior to the AWD if you really get stuck in some snow or mud
That car is beautiful
The fact that you're still talking about that Ranger Raptor says it all. Love the look of the Toyota but I can't pass on that raptor.
The Raised air intake ... Man we are easily amused, cuz I love the sound of mine when it inhales. ... And of course, this is a Toyota review and I noticed you pass a Cherokee sitting on the side of the road "Oooo, a Cherokee."
Well have to see how these engines hold up, compared to the outgoing v6
Toyotas are cool ❤️
I think it’s wild that these trucks were released a year ago and were just now getting driving impressions and mpg info
Seems like you're trying to like it despite it lacking in so many areas. It does look awesome though
amazing
I live in a city that is packed with Tacomas and 4Runners and I just chuckle to myself whenever I see them because I have a 20 year old Chevy Trailblazer that was 1/20th the price with a better engine and more room that will go on either as many or one fewer overlanding trips as their rigs.
The seats in the TRD are cool but the High sand intake is wayyy cooler. Love that turbo flutter 🔥
I look forward to buying one of these used in about a decade...
Great overview, great insight into your feelings about the Toyota line up and how the Ranger Raptor fits into the queue. Will be interesting to see how these new engines hold up over time and if they will be as great as the outgoing truck in terms of reliability and durability. The Raptors are an epic package, and that new Ranger Raptor isn’t as great looking as the Tacoma but it takes the crown for outright performance. Something for everyone. Now I shall be flame thrown off the hill by the Toyota zealots.😂
Couldn't agree more about the Land Cruiser's full-time 4 wheel drive...I owned a 2008 FJ Cruiser (6 speed manual) for 13 years and it was full-time 4 wheel drive (4h, 4l, LL transfer case). I then "upgraded" to a 2019 4Runner (rear-wheel drive with a 4 wheel transfer case: 2h, 4h, 4l). I can only use the 4 wheel drive if the roads are slippery enough so the tires can slip when necessary so as not to damage the differentials...it's not confidence inspiring...and not a day goes by that I don't miss the FJs 4 wheel system.
Great comment! I have a 2016 Tacoma 4x4 (2h, 4h, 4l) where you "can only use the 4 wheel drive if the roads are slippery enough so the tires can slip when necessary so as not to damage the differentials". The open rear diff sucks, the simulated limited slip (using ABS) is useless in the snow. I need 4H when pulling out of a snowy driveway then I must immediately put it back in to 2H after making the 90 degree turn onto a dry road and binding up the front driveline. I really wish they would go back to a mechanical limited slip differential and add "on demand" or full time 4 wheel drive. Honestly, in 3" or less of snow, my Mustang GT (with its mechanical rear diff, plus better weight distribution, better traction control programming and far better brakes) is a better winter vehicle than my 4x4 Tacoma.
James is trailing with his vw r in the river
Those seats are going to be amazing when I do my Costco runs
Can y’all do the 2024 tundra trd pro ??
They've nailed the parts and interior, now just get it back down to the size of a 2000 Tacoma and it'd be perfect!
One reason I bought my 24 ridgeline over the Tacoma was rearseat leg room. I cannot imagine living with that truck on a daily and trying to fit fullsize adults in the back.
I'm a Toyota pickup guy for life(owned 4 and still have 3 of those 4), but I just can't get into the 'top trims' they've been offering. I looked at Pros when I bought my '21, but ended up with a mid-line (Sport) and spent the money saved on the mods *I* wanted (like REAL Fox 2.5 res shocks and a supercharger). I know they gotta compete in the flashy nameplate wars but I'm glad they still have solid mid-market options that we can make our own.
But does it come with technical mounts?
Ah… these solo Thomas videos brings back memory before he brought some British Stand Up Comic onto the channel. Ha! Great video and hope you have some good time off James.
I like it alot
Trucks are so ridiculously expensive now it's kinda silly. Not to mention, they are huge. I hope Toyota makes the Stout or whatever it ends up being called, and they sell it in the states.
The great thing about the taco and tundra was simplicity and reliability, but I see now they've thrown all that out the window.
I don't know why, but I've come to trust Thomas's view on drive dynamics
James, for the win
I feel like we are in a second golden age for vehicles. I personally do not care about trucks and SUVs but these are pretty cool. Way out of my price range and I'll never buy them but they are cool.
Tonka should ask questions
Does the TRD Offroad have a Front locker?
Is a turbo always spinning when the engine is running? Yes, with turbos as long as there is exhaust gas flow the exhaust gas will spin the turbine wheel on the hot-side on the turbo
That truck is big.
Thomas did you drive the Long Bed Trailhunter? If it was that could be an additional reason for a smoother ride over the TRD Pro.
4:47 that might just be the best thing about the Trailhunter
