At the turn of the 20th Century Europe is in a state of flux, the perfect conditions for the formation of the most terrifying political organization history has seen, the Nazi’s. How was the country of Germany seduced by them? Was a whole nation under the spell of the Nazi Party or did the hope of a better life quickly turn sour once the killing began? The Rise of Adolf Hitler: 1889 - 1927:
In this episode we will look at how Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, Herman Goring, Josef Goebbels and Rudolf Hess made their individual journeys through pre-war Germany, the first world war to Hitler’s first speeches in the Beer Halls, his arrest and eventual imprisonment for treason, and the writing of his infamous book Mein Kampf in 1924.

    • I loved history also in the late 80's. It was the only subject I got an A in GCSE. However, I realise now, that history is written by the winners of war. Russian history differs. German and Japanese history doesnt, but Western friendly governments were installed in 1945 to help rewrite history. We didnt grow up in the shadow of the Versailles treaty and we do not know what it was like to feel that hate towards oppression. My opinion : - War is always fought over resources, mans greed is infinite and resources are scarce...basic economics lesson 1. The US is actually one of the most aggressive countrys when it comes down to expanding its economic interests, and arguably has committed some of the worst war crimes in history if a god was looking down. They are simply better at painting the picture of being the good guys to their own.

The fact that fascism(and communizm) emerged at the dawn of all these technical innovations is not a coincidence.

  • I like how history completely ignores the Russian involvement in the start of WW1. The head of Serbian intelligence met frequently (almost daily at points) with the Russian ambassador and military attache in the weeks leading up to the assassination. The ambassador then conveniently was out of Sarajevo when the assassination occurred. It's also hard to believe that Serbia would have acted so brashly against Austria-Hungary (the pistols used were stamped from a major Serbian armory, this was hardly clandestine) without Russian military backing. Upon assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Austria Hungary was the first nation to order a partial mobilization. It was Russia that was the first nation to order a general mobilization. Yet we conveniently seem to ignore this fact for whatever reason. Germany then sent an ultimatum to Russia demanding that they cease military mobilization against Austria-Hungary and Germany and simultaneously sent a request to France requesting that France stay neutral. However, France ordered mobilization as they were keen to avenge the humiliation of the Franco-Prussian War. These are the factual events, and they turn the idea of Germany as the evil aggressor completely on its head. Of course, the Germans were not at all adverse to war...all the major European powers were gripped by war fervor. However, it was actually Russia that started the chain of great powers mobilizing in relation to what could easily have been a cut and dried case of Austrian retaliation for state-sponsored assassination of a national leader.

    • History is written by the victor. Germany may not have been the initial aggressor, but they pissed off pretty much every country in the world by extending a losing war, and their U-Boat campaign had extensive collateral damage. I can understand why they were characterized as a villain after the fact.
