  • I still can't wrap my head around the fact that this woman managed to skate to A DRUM SOLO and it was beautiful. Absolutely brilliant.

    • Kurt Browning skated to this Led Zeppelin song in the 92-93 season. He won World's 93. It was an incredible work of art by Browning, and now Kostner did a marvelous job too. Not everyone can execute this with this type of piece. Both skaters are true artists, that's the reason why.

  • i dont care if she is over or underscored. she is 29. she is still skating. she did an awsome job. she is obviously not as fast and spunky as the young ones. but i cant deny the experience working in her favor. she delivered a unique choreography, with an out of the box music and costume. she was never one of my favorites, but this program is the wayshower and the only thing we havent seen reinterpreted and repackaged a gazillion times. i love it and i salute her for her courage to march to the beat of her own out-of-the-consensus drum. brava caro!

    @drsalka@drsalka7 жыл бұрын
    • She is not as fast as some of the other skaters for one very good reason, and it has nothing to do with age: her speed used to be almost out of her control. She learned over many years to control her incredible speed and use her ice coverage to her advantage. She is still capable of skating faster, believe me. It doesn't look that way on television, but in person, she is lightning fast.

      @danielflynn9141@danielflynn91417 жыл бұрын
    • Daniel Flynn she seems slower than many other skaters - even the spins seem slower.

      @drsalka@drsalka7 жыл бұрын
    • drsalka - The speed of spins has nothing to do with skating skills and the speed of skating. Kostner has never been a particularly fast or great spinner (even though some of her positions are beautiful), but she was a very fast skater. She is still fast now, but she shows it more in exhibition programs where she does not have to do difficult jumps and where perfectly done technical elements are not so important. Also, the step sequences in her competitive programs are almost always really difficult, with a lot of steps and movements that are practically impossible to do with great speed as they actually slow her (or any other skater who would try to do them) down. That's one of the reasons why she still gets very high GOE (grade of execution) for her step sequences even if they don't seem that fast.

  • Those american commentators outed themselves that they are not artistic, not musical or have an artistic-minded characteristic. They are simpleton americans. If they don't understand something, then they must not talk so much about it and leave it to those who understand. If they were former skaters, they probably were the type who did everything only their coaches gave them and told them what to do. These commentators don't even know that it's by Led Zeppelin, and maybe they don't even know who Led Zeppelin is! The music is wonderful, different yet simple. It is a big challenge to skate to. First, the great Kurt Browning skated to this Led Zeppelin experimental piece (Short Program 1992-1993 season, and he won), and he being an artist interpreted it incredibly. And now in 2017, the great Carolina Kostner. Only true artists could be brave and successfully skate to a piece such as this.

  • I have LOVED Carolina ever since she burst out onto the scene in 2003! IMHO Bolero in Sochi was the signature performance of her career. I was very surprised that she came back this year. The only thing I can think of is that she loves the thrill of competition. She and Ashley Wagner skate like true sophisticated women on ice, far and above anyone else.

    • Felicia Olmedo Es bien sabido que a lo largo de los años cuando algo nuevo surge siempre es despreciado y la mente clásica y estática siempre va a preferir lo viejo. Gracias a Dios Que los jueces no piensan como tú, porque de otra forma este deporte moriría. Carolina Cosner buena como siempre, pero nada del otro mundo que cualquier patinadora JAponesa o Americana no puedan hacer.

    • Because in the ISUs eyes she just needs to show up to win the gold medal. Just like Sotskova and CHEN can UR all they want. I'm so sick of how rigged the "sport" is

      @MsJubjubbird@MsJubjubbird7 жыл бұрын
    • MsJubjubbird i can see why the others were placed higher - it's the technical program, so she went for the relatively easier elements of 3t-3t and 3Loop, compared to Medvedeva and Pogorilaya. The other technical scores for Caro are well-deserved though. She can only rely on component scores for so much. IMHO, she needs to bring back the 3lutz and do 3f-3t to remain competitive with the kids. The sport has evolved so much since Sochi. The footwork was AMAZING! I can tell the she's using the 2017 season as a preparation for 2018 Olympics. I wonder if there was a complete move to Mishun despite saying it's Huth /Mishun. As long as she gets her choreography from her own choice (Lori Nichol, Shae-Lynn Bourne) I'll be pleased :)

    • Ed Calimag I can see why others placed higher overall. But components wise the scoring is based on preference not on actual components and she should have won in that department. The GOEs and levels are also becoming more and more like that too.

  • Coming back to big competition after 3 years and delivering this performance at 29 years old... That is class! The rest is just noise. It's easy for Russia to win with a 15 years old, 4 feet tall and 30 kg of weight... (the same for sotnikova or lipnistkaya- by the way, where are they now?!) Yes, russian technical scores are high because russian skaters are anorexic little girls but figure skating is another thing and I hope things will change otherwise in 10 years this sport will be a pre-teen prerogative.

    @bruely82@bruely827 жыл бұрын
    • Elina I agree with you, that Pogorilaya bears the same constitution with Kostner, and I'd say that Anna is going to be her successor as the queen of the elegant, "esoteric" school of skating in Europe. They also bear the same psychology more or less - a bit less confident and more sensitive than the others. Don't rush to praise the Russian school too much though. It's not a coincidence that the Russian school is more technical than the others - it's the same old story: too much pressure over the skaters, too much competition, too much nationalism I'd dare to say, and some pretty nasty suspisions after the rapid dissappearance of Sotnikova and Lipnsitskaya. Might I say that Anna Pogorilaya succeeds, not because of the great Russian school but despite of it? I think so.

      @AndMakrid@AndMakrid7 жыл бұрын
    • why are you so rude towards Russian girls,what did they do to you?

      @gulnaraahkoy7257@gulnaraahkoy72577 жыл бұрын
    • Ignorant? Wow, let's see who is gross here. I'm afraid you didn't get the point of my comment (The finger pointed to the moon...) but that's ok, I understand you're russian and you have perceived it as an offense which was not. I'm against the system, not the skaters. You reported the only 2 exception at the very moment and, beside, it's not only about the height as I said. There is a HUGE difference between a teen body and a woman body (not only in jumps but in spin positions for example), that's why the majority retires so early. Look at Lipnistkaya or Sotnikova, who was Olimpic GOLD medalist only 3 years ago! Where are they now? They're still under 20 years old, they were at the beginning of their carreer! They were good technical skaters but they couldn' make it in the russian nationals. Why? Because of this "trend". This skaters don't even have the chance to gain maturity and sophistication on their skate (which is something that skaters like Carolina Kostner, among others, had in the past) because new little ones are pushed to gain with technical difficulties that sometimes aren't even gracefull or enjoyable to whatch. The point is that this sport is changing a lot because of this "trend". I'm not saying this is a rule but it's a trend. I know that every sport requires a specific kind of body but this is going too far in my opinion. It wasn't gymnastic on the ice but if it continues like that it will be, I'm not against the skaters! They are the very victims of this system I think, too much pressure (see Radionova reaction in the national for example)! This is not sport anymore, this is business for the Federation. What happened in Sochi was really unfair and the whole world is aware of it. By the way, Pogorilaya is the very exception now, in this season she showed more maturity both techn and artisticly, so let's see in 10 years :)

      @bruely82@bruely827 жыл бұрын
    • That's why I love Ashley Wagner so much. Don't care about her underrotations, that girl can sell it. The level of artistry and elegance of those older ones is really unmatched by all those little jumping beans. I honestly think the age eligibility for senior skating should be at least 17.

      @Unfiltered494@Unfiltered4947 жыл бұрын
    • +bruely82 I agree with you in all butt pogorilaya because she express exactly what you, said. She looks always so pushed to the end of the program with technical challenges and never look relaxed. Julia looked very mature and exquisite at nationals this year in the short program and I believe she'll be back soon. Carolina is just an exception, nobody like her...

  • I love that Carolina Kostner is still competing. The program, with it's unorthodox choice of music, is excellent in terms of presentation. I love that she can keep up with the demanding pace and she's always been a very good example of wonderful technique. That said, she's *always* been overscored. I know that jumps are *not* always everything, but it has always been shoved down spectators throats that it is not so. One sloppy Triple Loop or decision to omit a Triple Salchow, you're out of contention. But, rarely did that ax fall on Kostner. I recall her victory at Worlds in 2012. The most difficult jump she performed in the LP was a Triple Flip. Not even two of them, just one. The second one, she doubled. The last time, before that, that a woman won a World Championships without a Lutz was in *1990*. Twenty two years prior. To put it into perspective, that was also only 5 years ago. I understand there are several other aspects of the score, but there is no way that Kostner hasn't had a few judges tack on an extra GOE point here or there when it wasn't always deserved. As good as she should be with components scores, it could be easy to inflate them -- everyone's already expecting a mark showing near perfection. Why not add a few half-points in a few categories when nobody's looking? She is a great, great skater. But she's not multi-medal international quality. Technically, she doesn't have it. Not then, not now. Here, her jump landings were rickety. Her spin quality was below her peers: that layback, though it had really cool arm positions, is a non-starter. The combination spin, though the half-sit looked great with the arm variation, was outdated. Nothing had great stretch, it was slow and became sloppy as it wore on. It was very 2002. She has awesome programs, a great demeanor with the crowd and seems to love skating. But, tell me that a Triple Toe/Triple Toe combo and a Triple Loop is the THIRD best SP in all of Europe in 2017. No. This would have been a 7th place program at the US Nationals -- and we are no longer considered remotely a powerhouse anymore.

    • Carolina's 2012 program was one of the best I have ever seen, an unmatchable elegance and grace. Technically she only doubled a jump and presented a perfect double Axel triple toe loop combination, perfect triple flip, and a very sophisticated triple loop only in the first part of the program. She was always on the podium that season.

Her component score... it's too much!!! 😱 I don't think her step sequence was the best of ladies figure skating... when you see Yuna Kim's "Send In The Clowns" program you will feel that Yuna is the best of Jumps + Spins +Step Sequence ever in Figure Skating history! Mao and Carolina never compete at all with Yuna Kim... they always overscored when they did cleans but Yuna was not... in 2013 worlds and 2014 Sochi's Short Program Yuna downscored too much...

    • Federico Pascucci Yeah, but Yuna's step sequence was much better in short and Free skating... The judges like Carolina and Asada so much! So they everytime overscored in every competition! But Yuna everytime underscored... In Sochi Olympics short should've got tech: 44 + component: 38= 82 more! That was legend!!! Judges just did trash things! Also in free skating Yuna should've got 150 more! Carolina didn't do 3-3 combination jump in free skating and what?! 142 in free skating?! Fuck that's a real shame in figure skating history! It's not true!

    • FULL MOON Please get yourself together. Denying that you are a crazy Yuna fan but then getting pissed at someone who has a different opinion just proves that you are a crazy Yuna fan.
